MANNVANUARY FOUR: There's a whole lot about this movie that feels either cornily earnest or slightly tone-deaf 35 years on, but I was genuinely impressed with Costner's ability to keep this epic moving lightly on its feet in spite of a 3-hour runtime. I won't necessarily defend Costner's performance here -- especially the voiceover "diary" sections that sound less like the character's actual thoughts and more like Costner indifferent reading passages out loud like he just got called on in high school English class -- but he manages to get fine performances from his ensemble and the action sequences are well done to boot.
