MANNVANUARY FOUR & 2025 CRITERION CHALLENGE #18: William Friedkin’s Closet Picks Took the advice of folks I follow online and watched the longer 2+ hr cut; I'll be curious to watch the shorter one at some point later, which I gather cuts out a lot of the nonessential elements not having to do with the gambling debt/contract kill plots. From what I understand Gazzara lobbied for the shorter cut because he thought it did a better job of showcasing his performance, but in all honesty I think it's more interesting when the movie is just showing Cosmo in the weird little world that he's built for himself. There's something vulnerable and revealing about the mixture of showman's bravado and softness Gazzara brings to it, that I'm not certain would exist in the same way with 25 minutes cut out.
