HOOPTOBER, NIGHT EIGHT: This was an interesting watch, specifically in terms of how I imagine this movie must have played 10 years ago as opposed to now. I'm not even sure if I have the critical or theoretical vocabulary to really articulate my thoughts on it, but it definitely feels like it was ahead of the curve in terms of depicting female relationships (romantic, friendly, or otherwise) in both horror and in general. And Jennifer and Needy's friendship (although we're given strong hints early on that it's more of a frenemy situation) seems pretty novel in terms of how it busts the presumption of a high school nerd/cheerleader caste system, which I don't really recall seeing in any other high school movies prior to Booksmart. One thing that I think is really interesting about this movie is that in spite of how Jennifer is killed/resurrected, she never tries to get revenge on the members of Low Shoulder. Instead she feeds exclusively on quasi-random dudes from the high school, and in the end specifically targets Needy's boyfriend, precipitating Needy finally killing her, and then the end credits montage of Needy tracking down and killing the band. It's almost as though Jennifer was 100% fine with becoming a demonic predator, and it was only Needy who actually lost something in the deal.
