a review of We Are Zombies

ℍ𝕆𝕆ℙ𝕋𝕆𝔹𝔼ℝ 𝔼𝕃𝔼𝕍𝔼ℕ ℕ𝕀𝔾ℍ𝕋 𝕋𝕎𝕆: Tackling the final BONUS selection first! I was initially intrigued by the premise of a zombie movie where the zombies are just people with a noncontagious post-death medical condition that is mostly inconvenient to the living, in the same way that society tends to treat real problems like poverty, racial inequality, disability, etc. But the movie's not really interested in investigating the real implications of any of that, in favor of laying on a thick layer of raunchy Kevin Smith/American Pie-type humor that makes the movie feel weirdly dated even though it's a 2023 release. Which makes this a bit of a comedown from Turbo Kid. Although knowing that this comes from the same filmmakers does give some context to the '90s slacker-comedy aesthetic on display here, as though maybe it was a purposeful tonal choice? If so, it didn't quite work for me, even though I basically grew up on that stuff. It does have some fairly good makeup effects and action direction once the zombie-apocalypse plot gets underway in the last third, but even then it feels like it's not quite there yet as a solid satire. Hoping to see the filmmakers come back with something as fun as their debut sometime though!
