This was considerably shaggier than I expected, but I liked the subtle throughline of having Wales start out as an ex-Confederate scumbag, only to find himself being slowly deradicalized by changes to the makeup of his traveling companions over the course of the film. Like a lot of Westerns, I wish it wasn't amplifying the lost cause myth, but I think Eastwood does an okay job of threading that needle with his own crotchety libertarianism and clear desire to tell a more humane story.
