a review of 无处为家

#68 (March 9/31) After seeing actor Macon Blair's performances in Jeremy Saulnier's last two films (Blue Ruin and Green Room), I was curious to see his directorial debut on Netflix after hearing a positive recommendation on the /Filmcast. It wasn't quite what I expected based on the aforementioned films, but it was a nice surprise all the same. It almost plays out as a parody of the kind of movie that Blue Ruin was, veering into early-Coens slapstick-doofus-noir territory at times. Melanie Lynskey is just as magnetic here as she was in Heavenly Creatures, and Elijah Wood's character is hard to get a bead on at first but slowly registers with an unsettling degree of specificity. It doesn't quite all come together in the end, but I found it very enjoyable and I look forward to what Blair does next.
