There are many of these apple trees in my area, in abandoned fields and along the roads. They appear to be escapees from very old orchards and they have naturalized over time. I've heard that local growers are trying to reproduce these trees, in an effort to revive ancestral varieties of apples that are well adapted to the harsh climate.

A single pink lotus blooms in front of a large green leaf. The flower is vibrant against deep shadows in the leaf. Side light catches the ribs in the surface of the leaf.

Just three years ago we were pleased to see that a single Marsh orchid (I think that's what it's called anyway) had found its way into the wild front garden.

This year's count so far is 18 of them.
