I am attending FediForum on October 7th & 8th.
See you there?
Have you checked out the loooong list of topics people are bringing to discuss at #FediForum next week? It spans the entire open social web, and more are tricking in as people are registering.
https://fediforum.org/2025-10/
Your topic is not among them? Come and bring it! FediForum is an unconference!
I'm thrilled to announce, especially on the occasion of the #Fediforum, that @medlab is launching an Open Social Incubator.
Our mission is to support a cohort of community builders who could use extra support in getting to know and learning to use open social tools.
Participants will receive $3,500, hands-on support, and a peer community.
Please spread the word! Learn more here: https://www.colorado.edu/lab/medlab/2024/09/11/open-call-join-open-social-incubator
FediForum is back for its September 2024 session! Come join us and hang out as we cover the event in real-time!
So after writing this up - it's obvious that customizing your timeline is a top trend in fediverse dev circles right now! Curious what will see in the upcoming demos as well.
I only had a few fleeting moments to catch the #FediForum today. But wow was I so glad to have been there!
@_elena premiered a new video that introduces the fediverse to mainstream social users, and it was very well produced. I got a little emotional about it! I believe it will be released on PeerTube within the week.
Something to look forward to, and share generously. You'll want to shake the cobwebs off your old Twitter and Facebook accounts and post it! :)
Day 1 of FediForum - Demo Summary Thread
Bounce is a new offering from @anewsocial that allows you to move accounts across platforms (Bluesky <---> Mastodon) including ALL of your followers and many of your followed accounts.

#FediForum premiere for my Fediverse promo film = done.
How did it go? So well that I've been fighting back tears for the past half hour.
Getting such warm, positive comments from builders and champions of the fediverse is EVERYTHING ❤️ Thank you @j12t for this opportunity.
I'm almost tempted to "deploy on a Friday" and share the link to the video now 😅 But nah, I know better. Tuesday it is! (Monday is a public holiday here)
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
Dear Fedi friends,
I'm really proud to share with you a video I made: "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/
In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.
I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).
The fediverse has truly changed my life, making me a better, more empowered digital citizen. I am endlessly grateful for it, so this is my contribution to the cause ❤️
I am also incredibly thankful for the work of @samaaberg and @patel.riyen who helped me bring my vision to life with their amazing cinematography skills and their assistance throughout the process, providing brilliant feedback to the script / edits from the POV of fedi newbies.
And I was also moved by the generous help of people of the Fediverse who volunteered to translate the script into many foreign languages: @jan @fritjof @erikkemp @sknob @severin @clabru @tarcisiosurdi @hongminhee @danielcasanueva @ainali @nacly
Lastly, I'm thankful for the opportunity I had to premiere the video last week at #FediForum - thank you @j12t and @anca
The video is up on my self-hosted PeerTube instance (thank you @yunohost) and for now it is unlisted as I have no idea how my VPS will hold up. I also included an alternate location in the blog post.
I hope you'll enjoy it! It's been a real labor of love (a month of full time work on it)... I see it as my love letter to the fediverse 💌
Edit/update: THANK YOU for all the people who volunteered to have their avatar show up in the last shot. There were 750+ submissions and only 135 spots - sorry I couldn't include everyone 🥲
#TheFutureIsFederated
I see why everyone loved @elena's fediverse video when it premiered at the #fediforum.

I'd be signing up myself!

Here's my writeup of #FediForum, in which I ask the question: is the fediverse making meaningful progress vs. centralized platforms? The post includes @_elena's excellent video and has discussion of @cwebber's presentation, Bounce (by @quillmatiq & @snarfed.org), Surf (by @mike & @marci), Channels.org (by @michael & @newsmast team), & Bandwagon (by @benpate). Thx also @j12t & @anca for FediForum. The headline is via Christine: "we can’t succeed without joy." https://thenewstack.io/bringing-joy-back-to-the-web-fediverse-vs-centralized-apps/
Oh, it's also #FediforumFriday which reminds me that folks should check out talks from #Fedicon a couple of weekends ago! and also, get tickets for the next #Fediforum coming up in October. https://fediforum.org/news/2025-08-06-fediforum-fall-announced/
In exciting #FediForumFriday news that technically was last Friday but it was so close to the wire I'm sharing anyway, @fediforum got their keynotes and demos uploaded along with the notes from June's #FediForum so you can go and check out all the amazing things that happened there for free: https://fediforum.org/2025-06/ .
Sneaking in a quick #FediforumFriday post! I’m really interested in https://wanderer.to/ which is a trails database / app that federates. Would be great to have them demo at a future #Fediforum 🤞🏻
Daniel Supernault (@dansup) is coming to #FediForum and says:
Yes, i would love to run a session about pixelfed, loops or sup
That'd be cool!

The world needs a secure, open source alternative to Facebook private posting (i.e. to friends only), but nothing on the fediverse really fills the need today, alas. At the Fediforum in June, I gave a short presentation on FriendSafe, a social media system I've written that supports private posting. It's a proof of concept that works today, but it would need major UX work and a security review before it's really ready for widespread use. It has a few other features I haven't seen in other social media yet, and which I'd love to see added to other projects.
In this thread is that 10-slide presentation, one slide per post. The text in the slides is the same as the text in the posts. The presentation is focused on FriendSafe, but I'm also just trying to get these ideas out there.
Let's start a conversation. Specifically, how can we move forward to get secure private posting ASAP, with full mobile support, etc.? I think this is critical to let people exit FB.
Brazil is starting to require age verification for social media sites, following other jurisdictions like the US state of Mississippi.
FediForum advisory board member @skarnio and his organization, Alquimídia, are organizing an online meetup TOMORROW to discuss the impact of this new law on Fediverse instances in Brazil and what instance operators need to do.

Today, I had the pleasure of meeting @HennaVirkkunen , the #EU Commission Vice President in charge of Tech Sovereignty, #Security & #Democracy, at the invitation of the Austrian Chancellery and Digital State Secretary Alexander Pröll, at their summit on 🇪🇺 #digitalsovereignty
Together with @c3wien, @WikimediaAT, @epicenter_works & @dpgalliance we are calling for open protocols & #interoperability to be strengthened when building public digital infrastructure ✨

With my #FediForum attendee hat on, rather than the organizer hat on, here are some things I want to discuss with you all:
Upcoming legal requirements for social media interop (utah, other us states, eu dma revision etc) – how does this impact our community?
From millions to billions – what is a plausible narrative for how to grow the open social web?
What should the european union (and other countries) do about social media?
Not sure I'll get to all of them ... https://fediforum.org
I am attending at least part of the Fediforum as I can during my work day.
I've been to several of them, and the addition of keynotes last time was a great success.
Glad to see that continue this time as well.
NOTE: There are limited offerings of "almost free" tickets for those that need them, so check out that option if you want to go!
