I respect #Emacs. I really do. But right now I just wanted to move a sentence around and somehow I've read about marks, regions, kills, yanks, buffers, windows, frames, and the deep personal meaning of the Meta key. I'm sure this is very powerful. I'm also sure this task would already be done if I'd used literally anything else I already know. #FreeSoftware #SoftwareFreedom

Hey fediverse #nonprofit people,
I've got a project (missionlibre.org), which is meant to bring kids aged 11-14 into #freesoftware. No part of it has been easy -- not practically, not personally.
I think Mission:Libre is wonderful, but I'm struggling: it's an odd little project in a complicated situation and I'm trying to find a way forward. I could really use an ear and some practical advice from someone with experience. Are you able to help me?

FLOSS #MaintainerLife public service advisory:
If you're filing a potential bug upstream in #GNOME, particularly on rapidly-improving apps like GNOME Calendar, please test the latest version, unmodified by third-parties. #Flatpak helps.
Don't come at me with a 4-years-old version cowboy-patched against our will by #Linux distros like Mint; I will send you downstream, like this: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-calendar/-/issues/1526#note_2640160

thinking about foss stuff, and I know I've groused about licensing stuff before, and how I feel like my only way out is to just Parity7 everything and fall into obscurity but...
...I think we need a different movement around open source, with new terminology, that clarifies the intent and opens doors to more pro-social behavior and capabilities (up to and including the potential for "ethical licensing").
I've been spitballing the terms Common Software and Community Software. The core idea is that things that count as Community/Common Software can't enter the realm of the proprietary (so, strong copyleft a-la AGPL and Parity, virality not necessary). What's the difference from "Free Software"? We get rid of "freedom zero", aka "the freedom to run software for any purpose". Common Software licenses may have Non-Commercial clauses, Anti-Particular-Industry clauses (such as anti-MIC stuff), etc.
I think "freedom zero" was a grave mistake. I get where it came from--a desire to remove discrimination--but what it resulted in was a hijacking of Free Software by the corporate "Open Source" wing to exploit an otherwise healthy community of people openly sharing their creations... for an enormous profit that we can't even quantify right now.
We need a strong return to copyleft, and we need to gather together and grow its existing ecosystem, away from the MIT/BSD poison that our world has turned towards.
Your thoughts are welcome on this. I want to have a conversation about this stuff and maybe eventually record all this in a longer-form blog post. If you know folks who have had similar thoughts please link them so we can chat, too.

If you re interested in decentralized #networks like the #Fediverse and #open protocols come over and say hi 👋
We'll have a screen with demos and stuff to show you ✨

I took a bye last month on account of it being the busiest week of my life, but I'm back with two #50forFOSS donations this month to make up for it. It's a double feature!
Psst...#50forFOSS is a monthly community pledge. If you want to join in, just pick a free/open-source project you appreciate and send 'em some cash. $50 is suggested, but any amount is great.

We must not forget that there are people working (oftentimes voluntarily) in ethical alternatives to harmful technologies so we can have a better usage of our computing systems while preserving our rights. These people include:
Free Software Foundation: https://www.fsf.org/
Free Software Foundation Europe: https://www.fsfe.org/
Software Freedom Conservancy: https://sfconservancy.org/
Framasoft: https://framasoft.org/
KDE: https://kde.org/
Do any moots know someone who we might be able to consult about restructuring a mid-size FOSS project? Essentially to migrate from a BDFL model to a more flat-structured democratic organisation.
We are discussing how to restructure #postmarketOS so that it can continue to scale up and be a truly community-run project.
We have some idea of how co-ops like Igalia do this, but we have a lot of differences (like being largely volunteer run and having very different goals) which leave us with a lot of unknowns.
To give an example of the kind of structure we're thinking of (by no means final, there hasn't been any broad agreement on a new structure yet):
We have the relevant pieces in place to form an assembly (everyone listed on https://postmarketos.org/team/ ) which could then democratically form teams and delegate responsibilities to them (e.g. finance/budget, technical policy-making, maintainers for various OS components).
The assembly would then also be responsible for deciding on focus areas and long term goals for the project (e.g. improving reliability, building a production-ready immutable version of the distro)
We could then form working groups to enable cross-team collaboration to move towards our specific goals.
Currently we lack a lot of understanding of the potential implications of something like this, how we can ensure the project doesn't get hijacked, that we don't drift too far from our mission statement, etc etc...
If you have a background in sociology and/or relevant experience from other projects then I would love to reach out and be able to discuss this in more detail!
