<p>An abandoned former military base in East Germany</p><p>After 1945, Soviet forces converted the old German base into a closed military town. By the 1970s, around 75,000 soldiers and families lived here. It was abandoned in the mid-1990s.</p><p>Many relics of the Soviet occupation remain. A statue of Lenin stands near the entrance. There is also a large theatre, a decaying swimming pool and a ballroom. <p>A Second World War air raid shelter, filled with fascinating portraits scrawled on the walls.</p><p>Inside one of the chambers is a time capsule underground art gallery, of sorts. The walls are covered with around 20 portraits, mostly drawn in charcoal or soot. Many depict women with 1940s hairstyles, alongside soldiers and well-dressed men.
