Not sure how I’m even writing this post, because I am literally bouncing up and down in absolute glee at how well this quilt top is coming together. I mean look how perfectly Laika fit next to Tereshkova!

There was a dreaded Y-seam on the Liu Yang block, but I made it thru 😅

Because the next astronaut has something in her hand, I can’t fully piece Yang’s leg section; it’ll hopefully be finished soon tho

Anticipating this top will be done Sat/Sun time frame 🤞🏻

#InarticulateAstroFirsts quilt top is finished! You might have to click to see it in full - it’s almost 90 inches long

I’ve got a lot of seams still to press flat; we’ve got a storm coming in and the humidity is wreaking havoc on them. But it’s going to be a great wall hanging when quilted!

The quilt has five approximately 36” tall blocky representations of some of the first women in space, including Valentina Tereshkova (first woman), Sally Ride (first American woman), Mae Jemison (first Black woman), Liu Yang (first Chinese woman) and Karen Nyberg (first quilter). Laika, the first dog in space, is also represented. Each astronaut is in a space suit and hairdo that looks like the one they wore in official photos, holding a helmet that has their name embroidered on it; none have facial features. Nyberg is also holding a quilt block that looks like the one she sewed in space. All the astronauts are set against a dark navy, starry sky.
