<p>An abandoned former military base in East Germany</p><p>After 1945, Soviet forces converted the old German base into a closed military town. By the 1970s, around 75,000 soldiers and families lived here. It was abandoned in the mid-1990s.</p><p>Many relics of the Soviet occupation remain. A statue of Lenin stands near the entrance. There is also a large theatre, a decaying swimming pool and a ballroom. From the backlog from last October: I did the Old City Hall station tour. The tour is only open to members of the NY Transit Museum. <p>On Exoplanet 09774 these seeds have gained the name of Walking Apples. Plants don’t walk, (well, except for Triffids) but these ones do, sort of. Once dropped from the branch, the ‘legs’ move the seed along the soil upwards of 10 meters. There are no birds to spread the seed on this planet, which is probably why they walk. Sitting nestled in the leaves of a green bush there is a round green ball, that looks like a small apple in this photo. Hanging down from this seed/flower thing are tendrils. They look like octopus arms with tiny green hairs and dangle down like from a jelly fish. They look like they could be legs for walking. But only on a different planet. Maybe.

<p>A Second World War air raid shelter, filled with fascinating portraits scrawled on the walls.</p><p>Inside one of the chambers is a time capsule underground art gallery, of sorts. I’ve called New York home for decades and love my city. But I have to say I felt profoundly SEEN when I visited San Francisco, in a way that I haven’t felt in any other American city and didn’t realize I’d missed and craved. Tagalog translations were matter-of-factly included everywhere, from plaques to museum pamphlets, and even utility boxes in the streets reflected my background and first language. It was as if the entire city, institutionally, was telling me “We recognize the whole of who you are and you are welcome here,” and it shook me to my core. I’m sure Filipinos who actually live there can point out the ways the city falls short of its promise, but this was what I experienced emotionally, and I’ll always be grateful to SF for that.

collaboration with the parents and teachers of the bilingual afterschool program, FEC GALING BATA at Bessie Carmichael and the Filipino Education Center (est. 1969) in the SOMA. This project serves as an example of community empowerment through education in the history of SOMA Pilipinas.

The flashcard design is inspired by the bilingual classes available at the FEC GALING BATA Afterschool Program where multicultural children and children of new immigrant families learn both English and Tagalog. The colorful designs on the card are Vera Cruz's renderings inspired by ihe indigenous Filipino communities that create the handwoven textile, Hinabi. The flashcard itself shows the current Filipino alphabet, and the Ancient Filipino pre-colonial script, Baybayin. This project pays tribute to the parents, and teachers in the immigrant cultural district in the South of Market who instill vital linguistically and culturally responsive services and resources empowering our youth. <p>Industrial <a href="/tags/artdeco/" rel="tag">#ArtDeco</a>, at its finest! This abandoned powerplant plant control room in Hungary was powered down decades ago.</p><p>The oval room is lit by an immense skylight, which casts dramatic light across the original green metal control panels. These walls remain lined with levers, valves, and dials.</p><p>Without a doubt, one of my favourite adventures.
