Every 4th of July, I'm the event photographer for celebrations in Monterey, CA where I work promoting small business. Nicknamed locally as the "Language Capital of the World" its remarkable diversity is always on display at its annual 4th of July parade and other celebrations.

Well, that's in a normal year. Unfortunately the mood in Northern California as it has elsewhere in the United States has descended into a pall of fear and anxiety. It was shocking to see the proudly diverse city of Monterey have the whitest and straightest celebration that I never thought I'd see anywhere in my home state much less in my own backyard.

I think it's wild that cryptocurrencies are also crashing along with the US stock market. I mean, I feel like they're doomed to crash generally but there legitimately seemed to be enthusiasm in that industry that Trump would make the line go up.

Regarding what follows, I have no standing in economics but I do know a bit about it, I can do math, and I've read the opinions of a few experts I trust. As far as I can tell this document I link below is word salad. Among many head scratchers in it, one of the considerations proposed for choosing a tariff rate is "Do the nation’s leaders grandstand against the United States in the international theater?" This is not economics, it's petty grievance disguised as policy. Words are cheap. What matters is what these nations' leaders do. The framing this document takes, that the US is somehow cheated by the current global trade arrangement and world order, is false on its face. Again, this is grievance disguised as policy. Anyway, here goes:

As an analyst at Hudson Bay Capital, Stephen Miran authored the blueprint for the tariff strategy the Trump administration is now using:

Tariffs provide revenue, and if offset by currency adjustments, present minimal inflationary or otherwise adverse side effects, consistent with the experience in 2018-2019. While currency offset can inhibit adjustments to trade flows, it suggests that tariffs are ultimately financed by the tariffed nation, whose real purchasing power and wealth decline, and that the revenue raised improves burden sharing for reserve asset provision. Tariffs will likely be implemented in a manner deeply intertwined with national security concerns, and I discuss a variety of possible implementation schemes. I also discuss optimal tariff rates in the context of the rest of the U.S. taxation system.

I just saw Mark Elias' tariff theory. It is a far darker idea than tariffs as sales tax to replace income tax.

His idea is that it is just a Grand Corruption Machine. It is designed such that leaders from business, US states and other countries have to go to Trump and beg for relief from the tariffs that apply to them. The begging involves making Trump richer.

The idea that trillions of dollars are being wiped from the stock exchanges, a severe recession seems imminent, inflation is spiking and the entire world order is being upset so that Trump can play at being king of the world and get some kickbacks does seem like a very Trumpian plan.

See, for instance, this paper Estimating digital product trade through corporate revenue data. The US's main conventional export is currently petroleum, but it exports over twice as much in digital advertising. The US's overall "digital exports" are larger than the total exports of France, which is the world's 7th leading exporter. However, these numbers are not typically included in reports about trade deficits or surpluses.
