Electric Hawaii
Opossom
Fire Records
After eight years fronting New Zealand's acclaimed "trouble gum art punks" The Mint Chicks, Kody Nielson unveils a new project Opossom with the captivating album Electric Hawaii. Following a June release in Australia and New Zealand on Create/Control, the album will be released in the rest of the world via Fire Records in August. The Mint Chicks chapter in Kody's career closed with the band splitting time between their American base in Portland OR and hometown Auckland. Brother Ruban formed a new band, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Kody began producing diverse projects including Bic Runga's recent album and Auckland punk up-and-comers, The DHDFD's. Electric Hawaii presented a new challenge, an album written and performed with just a little help from others - Bic Runga lending a vocal while Kody's father Chris Nielson (a regular Mint Chicks collaborator) plays trumpet. The rest comes directly from the brain, hands and heart of Kody. Home-written, recorded and mixed by himself with just the final mastering courtesy of Howie Weinberg, Electric Hawaii is a unique beast - it is not the singer-songwriter solo album of a former punk rock band singer. It's a further exploration of Kody's musical journey into a lively, engaging world of carefully layered sonic layers of light and dark. It's an album about love, DIY, drugs and freedom. And why end up Opossom? The mental escape from daily life during the creation of "Electric Hawaii" produced Kody's nocturnal instinctive animal... feisty, vicious and enigmatically cute. The new direction and new sounds incorporate what Kody terms as an overt attempt to add some of his personal Polynesian background to his blend of beatnik psychedelica made from out of context genres, surf rock to the Velvet Underground, modern and ancient electronica and jazz. With the album complete, Kody is now joined by Bic Runga in the role of chanteuse and multi-instrumentalist and former fellow Mint Chick Michael Logie on bass guitar duties in bringing Opossom songs to life.

Struck with a case of Mono, Jakob's Solace appears to be very similar to its predecessor, albeit much better produced this time around. At least, that's what the listeners ascertains after initial listens. At the heart of the album, Solace is a gentle listen (particularly a gentle beast), and after returning to Cale:Drew, it becomes apparent that this is what the outfit was attempting during that album, but who's missteps were fortunate enough to morph it into a different, yet successfull, experience nonetheless. The trio returns on Solace to set things straight, and by noticeable lengthening the songs lengths, the band is able to set the ambient waves into motion. Much of the action of the album takes place in the background, with the drums taking the forefront as crisp ambience floats in and out of the landscape. The "climaxes" are those moments when the guitars take the lead, occasionally switching into "riff mode," but generally just retaliating with a storm of distortion. Subtlety is the name of the game with Solace, and Jakob comes out on top.
Second Opinion: Solace is a strong offering that transcends genres and is built around a couple of simply beautiful tracks that will linger in your sub-conscious and haunt your dreams. For this alone, Jakob deserve your attention.

Everything all of the time,秉承了本作的基调,只是高潮早了点。

The trio of Ben Lanz, Scott Devendorf and Bryan Devendorf formed in 2011 in Auckland, New Zealand.
LNZNDRF’s debut is rock minimalism meets sonic maximalism. Recorded in a church in Cincinnati over two and a half days, the eight songs on the album were improvised with a vital spirit harking back to the reason the members became musicians in the first place. The songs, which were edited from 30+ minute jams, evoke the essence of their expansive, largely improvised live shows.
Wild Things
Ladyhawke
Mid Century Records
“People wonder why there’s always a massive gap between my albums,” says Pip Brown, better known as Ladyhawke, the one-woman synth-pop act from New Zealand. The reason is both complicated and easy. The simple explanation: “I’ve never released anything I’m not proud of. That’s important to me. I don’t want to release anything that I have a weird feeling about.”
Brown’s conviction to authenticity led her on a journey starting in 2013. Over three years, she scrapped a full Ladyhawke album (“The material didn’t feel like me. It felt too dark or something”). Once reliant on alcohol to surmount social anxiety (“I’d never done a sober show in my life until last December”), she quit drinking and focused on getting healthy. Then she welcomed that newfound clarity by crafting her latest release, the blissed-out Wild Things.
“I think I went even more synthy and poppy this time around,” Brown says of the buoyant Wild Things. “I feel good for the first time in 10 years. I actually have a clear mind! I have a wife. I feel stable. That is what I’m celebrating.”
The quivering title track, an airy paean to cleaning up and settling down, sits at the heart of the album. Explains Brown, “It’s me realizing I’m so lucky to have somebody to dance around the fire with.” “Wild Things” sets the exhilarating tone for her other deep-dives into relationships, such as “A Love Song,” a sweeping, reverberating revelation. “‘This is what a love song sounds like’—meaning it’s not all sappy,” she explains. “I’d lose everything if I didn’t stop drinking. The other person in your life, sometimes they have to be cruel to be kind.” Meanwhile, the ebbing-and-swaying “Chills,” co-written with Babydaddy of the Scissor Sisters, was more about the visceral response you get when you’re first attracted to someone. (“This is love/This is love/This is love/This is everything,” she beams in the chorus.) “He was on piano I was on bass,” she recalls. “We just jammed that one out.”
All told, she worked on the album on and off over the course of a year—“day here, a day there”—with producer Tommy English (Børns, Tiësto, Dark Waves), whom she met through her L.A. neighbor, tattoo artist/musician Kat Von D. “We sat in a room and would jam around, play around with ideas. Or he’ll sit there making a beat,” she said, of their organic process. “I instantly knew when something inspired me. That’s when we’d run with it.”
For the first time, making an album was effortless for her. “I usually have to fight the voices in my head,” she says. “‘I can’t do this. I can do this. I can’t. I can….’” I’d overthink it.” With the first record, “I was kind of like this overexcited naïve kid,” she explains. But she toured that album for two years and came back “a shell of a person.” Brown was especially disillusioned by the fact that people persisted to think that Ladyhawke was a band. “People assumed I didn’t write my own music.”
By the time she recorded her follow-up, the aptly titled Anxiety, she felt she had much to prove. “My producer Pascal Gabriel and I made the record in France, and it was a beautiful experience. But it was also very tiring and taxing, because I felt creatively drained. The second album was a hard album to make but I was incredibly proud of it.” Making Wild Things was, in contrast, like therapy. “Tommy was good at pushing me,” she says. “I need a push.”
And in many ways, Wild Things is less about past demons and more a catalyst of what’s to come. “This album has given me a sense of purpose. Even if it took me months or years to get that purpose, as soon as I finished that record it was like an unbelievable weight was lifted off my shoulders,” she says. You can hear that freedom in Wild Things’ unabashed exuberance, a powerful, vibrant expression of life itself. “Everything I wrote was all the stuff I was going through. I got it out of my system, exorcised it from my soul.”

Opposite Sex
Strange feelings come out in strange ways, as tends to happen in a city of miserable winter, depression, and a uni populace crawling with the sorts of fucking jocks about whom the songs basically write themselves. Lucy, in ‘Supermarket’: "Make me cute, make me sweet, make me fragile and petite / So I can be pushed around by some dickhead who likes rugby, beer and meat". Swipe right. Tim’s standout moment, ‘Tasman's Puke’, spells out in no polite terms his take on NZ's colonial past. And with Reggie’s voice crawling away with his guitar in ‘Regicide’, it makes it abundantly clear that Opposite Sex have as many ways to do songs as they have songs.
That’s because, in spite of the patented ‘sound’ of their city, the real Dunedin influence on Opposite Sex comes by way of an ideology. There’s punk, of course, as usual, but the bizarro lens of Xpressway -- “the Dunedin label” -- what with its Marxist dues and DIY purism, is the heftiest inheritance thanks to how many of Opposite Sex’s peers come from this older school. (Peter Gutteridge from Snapper was a close friend; Alaistar Galbraith enjoys spinning the odd Opposite Sex record; the two Dunedin members of the Dead C are often seen at a gig). It only helped their underground reputation that certain big-name ex-members of the Fall and the Pastels wound up being big fans of this obscure New Zealand band.
Whichever way you have ‘em -- and there are many ways to have ‘em -- Opposite Sex have already left a permanent impression within today’s younger underground generation. Besides that one fact, there aren’t many unifying features of a band so scattered, but so brilliantly chaotic, and by no means confused. But that’s just what you get from a band with so much uncontrollable inspiration, a band that’s like mashing your hands against the keyboard of existence and expecting Shakespeare to come out. Judging by HAMLET, it’s just funny when it sort of does.
