本书聚焦关乎语言生成、组构和变异的动态过程。作者提纲携领地提出语言新论，开门见山地探讨语法的本质问题，将变异性和递差性统筹兼顾，以作用于语言使用行为的复现过程为切入点寻求解释。其论据涵盖基于大型口笔语语料库的研究发现、语言变迁的相关知识以及语言使用者作为受试的实验结果。本成果围绕语言使用和语言变迁这一论题，提出了一套整合型理论，对认知过程和语言演变研究具有启示意义。

The phenomenon of language contact, and how it affects the structure of languages, has been of great interest to linguists. This study looks at how grammatical forms and structures evolve when speakers of two languages come into contact, and offers an interesting insight into the mechanism that induces people to transfer grammatical structures from one language to another. Drawing on findings from languages all over the world, Language Contact and Grammatical Change shows that the transfer of linguistic material across languages is quite regular and follows universal patterns of grammaticalization - contrary to previous claims that it is a fairly irregular process - and argues that internal and external explanations of language structure and change are in no way mutually exclusive. Engaging and informative, this book will be of great interest to sociolinguists, linguistic anthropologists, and all those working on grammaticalization, language contact, and language change.

本书是2014年在北京举行的互动语言学和汉语研究学术讨论会论文集。这次讨论会是中国内地首次以“互动语言学”为主题进行的学术讨论会，由《中国语文》编辑部和中国人民大学文学院联合主办，来自中国内地以及美国、加拿大和中国香港地区的三十余位学者参加。本书由《中国语文》编辑部方梅老师主编，收录了包括沈家煊、王洪君、乐耀、方梅、陶红印等十几位语言学专家学者的共计18篇文章，文章集中展现了近年来互动语言学与汉语研究的科研成果。

Complex hierarchic syntax is a hallmark of human language. The highest level of syntactic complexity, recursive-embedded clauses, has been singled out by some for a special status as the evolutionary apex of the uniquely - human language faculty - evolutionary yet mysteriously immune to Darwinian adaptive selection. Prof. Givón's book treats syntactic complexity as an integral part of the evolutionary rise of human communication. The book first describes grammar as an adaptive instrument of communication, assembled upon the pre-existing platform of pre-linguistic object- and-event cognition and mental representation. It then surveys the two grand developmental trends of human language: diachrony, the communal enterprise directly responsible for fashioning synchronic morpho-syntax and cross-language diversity; and ontogeny, the individual endeavor directly responsible for acquiring the competent use of grammar. The genesis of syntactic complexity along these two developmental trends is compared with second language acquisition, pre-grammatical pidgin and pre-human communication. The evolutionary relevance of language diachrony, language ontogeny and pidginization is argued for on general bio-evolutionary grounds: It is the organism's adaptive on-line behavior- invention, learning and skill acquisition - that is the common thread running through all three developmental trends. The neuro-cognitive circuits that underlie language, and their evolutionary underpinnings, are described and assessed. Recursive embedding turns out to be not an adaptive target on its own, but the by-product of two distinct adaptive moves: (i) the recruitment of conjoined clauses as modal operators on, or referential specifiers of, other clauses; and (ii) the subsequent condensation of paratactic into syntactic structures.

In this volume leading researchers present new work on the semantics and pragmatics of adjectives and adverbs, and their interfaces with syntax. Its concerns include the semantics of gradability; the relationship between adjectival scales and verbal aspect; the relationship between meaning and the positions of adjectives and adverbs in nominal and verbal projections; and the fine-grained semantics of different subclasses of adverbs and adverbs. Its goals are to provide a comprehensive vision of the linguistically significant structural and interpretive properties of adjectives and adverbs, to highlight the similarities between these two categories, and to signal the importance of a careful and detailed integration of lexical and compositional semantics. The editors open the book with an overview of current research before introducing and contextualizing the remaining chapters. The work is aimed at scholars and advanced students of syntax, semantics, formal pragmatics, and discourse. 《规约化与立场表达》一章简要回顾了上世纪八十年代以来几个主要流派的研究，并将美国话语功能语言学家John W. Du Bois的立场表达研究的译文附在全书的*后。希望能使读者借此更全面地了解功能语言学家关注的问题和研究的视角。本书的第二章简要介绍了从词汇、语法、语音、话语分析不同角度对汉语立场表达的探讨，讨论了汉语研究的特点以及与其他语言相关研究在材料、观察视角等方面的异同。第三章概述了指称语、述谓语、某些句式和构式以及语音手段的立场表达功能。第四章到第十一章，通过个案分析探讨了立场表达在话语中的功能浮现。第十二章讨论了负面立场在规约化过程中的若干规律性问题。

本书系统地提出了一种不同于乔姆斯基观点的语言演变理论，把生物学和语言学的一些不同的立场整合在一起，旨在实践一种综合功能主义的主张。书中不仅大量吸收了社会语言学的理论和方法，而且吸收了功能一类型学派的语言演变理论的思路，并将这些理论较好地整合在以广义选择理论为基础的语句选择理论之中。

《汉语功能语法研究》借鉴现代语言学的话语分析和功能句法学方法，对现代汉语语法中的若干重要问题进行功能分析。《汉语功能语法研究》涉及的研究方面有：主位结构研究。从宏观上观察口语句子可以看出，不管是对话还是独白，汉语都有一些明显的强化主要信息、弱化次要信息的手段，这种着眼于信息传递策略的结构分析就是主位结构的研究。《汉语功能语法研究》详细研究了主位结构的基本概念和理论价值，重点分析了汉语口语里主位结构的两种典型的表现形式。
焦点结构研究。《汉语功能语法研究》首先从系统的角度区分出了汉语里的两种不同性质的焦点：常规焦点和对比焦点。指出，对比焦点得以突出，有赖于调动特有的形式标记手段；常规焦点得以突出，则导致了一些语序的变化。书中着重分析了动词宾语和动量成分、趋向成分的语序问题，从中可以看到语序变化中的焦点表现。通过焦点结构的分析，使过去研究中的一些孤立的句法一语义规律获得统一的解释。
语法化研究。功能视点把语言现象看作一个动态的过程，着眼于语法规律历史上的形成过程，有利于了解其功能实质。每个语法范畴背后都有一部功能调整的历史。《汉语功能语法研究》着重分析了指代范畴、尝试范畴等的语法化历程，得出了范畴虚化的若干规律，从系统内功能分配和方言对比中探求形式演变和兴替的动因。
词类功能与句法功能的研究。《汉语功能语法研究》专门对汉语主要词类的认知基础进行了探讨，从名词的空间性和动词的时间性出发，解释了词类活用现象和领属结构的语义构成，并以性质形容词的界定问题为例，说明词类与句法成分之间的关系。作者的一篇译文也是这个问题中一项有重要启发意义的论.文，作为附录收在书后。
《汉语功能语法研究》的用例大多取自北京口语。材料来源既有书面材料，也有录音材料，都是典型地反映北京口语特点的例子，这种取材方式不仅提高了语料的纯度，也增强了研究结论的可靠性。

有些事被认为是可能的，有些事则是必然的；有些事允许做，有些事有必要做，达便是情态（modality）。语言表达这一范畴时，显得非常复杂。 《语言与认知文库：现代汉语情态研究》在当代语言学的框架下，以现代汉语事实为观察对象，对情态进行了全面而深入的考察和分析；对情态动词表达的情态系统、情态动词的范畴地位、特别是情态与其他范畴的互动关系进行了很有价值的探索。视角与研究方法新颖独特、语料丰富翔实、论证细致缜密、观点富有新意，对推动语言学及相关学科的发展具有积极的意义。
