This comprehensive reference explores the way in which different cultures use language, as well as the major features of phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon of the Indo-European languages family.

This book describes the earliest reconstructable stages of the prehistory of English, focusing specifically on linguistic structure. It outlines the grammar of Proto-Indo-European, considers the changes by which one dialect of that prehistoric language developed into Proto-Germanic, and provides a detailed account of the grammar of Proto-Germanic. In the course of his exposition Don Ringe draws on a long tradition of work on many languages, including Hittite, Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, Slavic, Gothic, and Old Norse. This second edition has been significantly revised to provide a more in-depth account of Proto-Indo-European, with further exploration of disputed points; it has also been updated to include new developments in the field, particularly in the reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European verb and nominal inflection. The author also reconsiders some of his original approaches to specific linguistic changes and their relative chronology based on his recent research.

吐火罗语的发现和研究是印欧语历史比较语言学的大事。由于我国缺乏研究古代印欧语的学术传统，所以尽管吐火罗语的材料对中国民族史、佛教史和中印文化交流史等的研究具有重要意义，中国学者在一个相当长的时期里，尚不具备进入这个领域的条件；直到季羡林先生于20世纪30年代留德期间致力于此，经数十年艰苦不懈的努力，才改变了这种状况。由于吐火罗语的定名涉及到一系列历史、地理和民族问题，我国史学家亦多注意及此，取得不少成绩。但对于吐火罗人的起源问题，以及与此密切相关的原始印欧人的起源和迁徒问题，国内却一直没有人进行系统研究。本书作者关注“吐火罗问题”近40年，搜集了大量有关资料，特别是从20世纪80年代开始，从新疆考古的新发现中得到启发，逐步认识到新疆出土的具有白种人特征的古尸和人骨所代表的的该地区古代居民，应与吐火罗人有某种渊源关系。虽然近世发现的吐火罗语文献年代相对较晚，但吐火罗语本身是一种古老的印欧语，它脱离印欧语共同体的时间相当早，在操这种语言的部族到达新疆等地区之前，它又与欧亚大陆的各支印欧语和非印欧语发生了接触。中国古代史籍所载的“月氏”，可能亦与吐火罗人有关。吐火罗人的史前时期已到达南西伯利亚，其物质文化遗存是为阿凡纳羡沃文化；进入后世，其分布范围愈益广泛，从黄河流域至中亚、南亚，皆可见斯踪迹。作者认为：考古学、语言学和遗传说研究现在正帮助我们建立关于人类过去的一个较完整的三维图像，所以必须进行跨学科的研究，才能最终揭开吐火罗问题这个千古疑谜的谜底。书的最后附有相关文献目录，可供参考。本书与国内已出版的关于吐火罗问题的著译不同，是以吐火罗语和吐火罗人以至印欧人的起源及迁徙为中心展开论述的，并且尽可能吸取了20世纪90年代中期至本世纪初考古学、人类学、分子生物学和语言学的新成果，体现了在学术前沿进行研究和探索的特点。

本书收集的论文是2003年8月在上海师范大学召开的“汉语方言历史层次及吴、闽、客、赣方言历史层次研究工作小组学术研讨会”和2004年8月在上海复旦大学召开的“首届历史层次国际研讨会”的成果。这些论文共分两部分：第一部分偏重历史层次的理论问题，作比较一般性的探讨；第二部分偏重个别方言中的历史层次问题，直接讨论有关层次的种种关系。
