反智主义倾向不仅存在于美国福音派基督徒中，更茁壮生长于长久浸泡在反智文化的中国社会的基督徒群体中。本书的作者约翰•派博正是针对教会里的这一反智现象，鼓励基督徒成为爱思考的基督徒，也就是鼓励基督徒养成阅读习惯。借着与爱德华兹的对话，派博指出 “我们必须用我们的头脑，也必须知道，用我们的头脑也是不够的。我们必须在宣讲、解释、确认和理解福音时，运用我们的理性。
