郭永怀（1909年4月4日-1968年12月5日）是著名的力学家、应用数学家，我国近代力学事业奠基人之一。1968年12月5日，因飞机失事不幸牺牲。1999年被授予“两弹一星”功勋奖章。李佩（生于1919年12月20日），郭永怀的夫人，中国科学技术大学和中国科学院大学英语教授，我国应用语言学之母。他们的事迹在广大公众中传颂。中国科学院力学研究所决定在纪念郭永怀先生牺牲45周年之际，举行郭永怀先生遗物捐赠仪式，并编辑出版《高山仰止大爱无疆——我们心目中的郭永怀和李佩先生》这本纪念文集，以将他们的卓越贡献、杰出成就和高尚风范代代相传。
