When it was first published in 1968, this monograph was among the most important contributions to the area of phonetic research in Africa since the publication of Westermann and Ward's Practical Phonetics for Students of African Languages in 1933. Drawing from a sample of sixty-one West African languages, Dr Ladefoged offers a description of the phonetic elements that cause differences in lexical and grammatical meaning. In particular, he focuses on unusual sounds, highlighting their linguistic function and providing a detailed account of their application in the languages concerned. Supplementing Dr Ladefoged's analyses are a number of helpful diagrams and illustrations as well as two appendices and a bibliography.

《缅彝语音韵学》讨论的是我国古西羌南迁居民及其后裔的语言。作者认为古西羌南迁居民及其后裔的语言是从原始藏缅语分出的一个支派，经过羌戎语和羌缅语两个历史阶段，分出了缅彝语这一声调祖语。调类特征体现了缅彝语诸语言的亲缘关系，可以此与非本语支语言划界，具有语言谱系分类学上的意义。《缅彝语音韵学》构拟了古有110个声类、71个韵类，《缅彝语音韵学》构拟的古音字汇含1500多个单字（包括同义字），为建构缅彝语声类、韵类和调类提供了一个新的方案。

《赣语声母的历史层次研究》是就一个大方言区进行这种研究的一次成功的实践。方言语音的历史层次研究必须从共时的内外比较人手，归纳区内的各种类型，再和周边方言比较其异同，然后在汉语语音吏方面分析其历史层次。因此，方言语音的历史层次研究实际上就是方言语音的纵横两向的比较研究。虽然讨论的只是声母的历史层次，其实在许多方面已涉及韵母和声调的特征。因为声母的分合和演变常常是以韵母、声调为制约条件的。不仅如此，讨论声母的历史层次势必还会牵连到词汇的特征，关系到方言形成和发展的历史背景。常用词和非常用词、方言固有词和通语用词、口语用字和书面语用字等等，也常常成了不同语音历史层次的取决条件，而方言历史背景对于理解方言语音的历史层次来说，有时，是不可缺少的。《赣语声母的历史层次研究》关于赣语声母历史层次的研究方法是遵循内外比较、历史分析、关照系统(声母、韵母和声调的语音系统和语音、词汇的系统)，并且联系了语言与历史文化背景的外部关系，因此，所做的分析是有说服力的，也可以使人们得到关于赣方言的整体特征的认识。可见，研究方法对头了，分析问题就会有新的突破，理论上也可以得到升华。
除了方法科学，《赣语声母的历史层次研究》的成功还在于作者下足了功力。在讨论每个声母现象的时候，《赣语声母的历史层次研究》都能尽量不遗漏地罗列已有的赣语调查材料，努力进行类型归纳，做到言之有据。同时也尽量不遗漏地查检历来学者们的有关分析结论，认真加以比较、权衡和评价。在材料方面，作者从1987年攻读硕士学位时开始就一点一点地调查赣方言，后来参加我们所主持的《客赣方言调查报告》这个研究项目，赣方言点大多是他参与'或独力到实地调查的。从那时到本．书成书，真可谓是十年磨_剑，其中甘苦不言而喻。所以，《赣语声母的历史层次研究》的成功首先得益于作者这十几年的积累。在理论方面，作者对于前人的研究成果也努力做到不论巨细，一一检验。对于初学者的研究成果并不忽略，对于大专家的结论也敢于提出质疑，在真理面前人人平等。没有发掘材料和检验理论这两方面的功力，要寻求突破是艰难的。
《赣语声母的历史层次研究》对于赣语声母的历史层次的研究上有哪些突破，当然还有待于各方面的专家们审核。无需在这一篇序文里一一提出。但是，由于我们始终都参与并关注这项研究，还是有不少感触的，希望专家和读者能仔细披阅，多加发掘。这里只就若干较为重要的课题提个头，供大家思考。

《处州方言的地理语言学研究》运用方言地图，直观地显示处州方言重要语言特征的地理分布，归纳方言区别性特征，对处州方言进行地理分类；运用地理上的共时分布分析处州方言的历时演变过程；运用非语言因素（行政区划、地貌地缘、政治经济、传媒教育、文化心理等）解释处州方言地理分布和历史演变的原因，探索语言变化的过程和机制。

戚林八音》是闽方言中成书最早、流传最广、影响最大的通俗韵书，《戚林八音校注》不但是研究闽方言的重要文献，也是研究音韵学史和方言学史的重要古籍。

《新唐书释音声类研究》通过对《新唐书释音》反切上字的研究，结合汉语语音史中声母演变的大势，对该书音切所表现的一些宋代语音现象进行了分析，讨论了诸如浊音声母清化，舌、齿音声母知、庄、章三组的合流等中古音向近古音转变的一些标志性的问题。通过对董衡反切声类系统的具体研究，可以让我们认识到宋代的音义书中的音切，一方面既有对前音义反切的继承，一方面也透露出作者在不经意之间反映出来的时音特点，而这些表现了时音特点的材料，正是研究汉语语音演变极有价值的语料。
该书可供各大专院校作为教材使用，也可供从事相关工作的人员作为参考用书使用。

Understanding speech in our native tongue seems natural and effortless; listening to speech in a nonnative language is a different experience. In this book, Anne Cutler argues that listening to speech is a process of native listening because so much of it is exquisitely tailored to the requirements of the native language. Her cross-linguistic study (drawing on experimental work in languages that range from English and Dutch to Chinese and Japanese) documents what is universal and what is language specific in the way we listen to spoken language. Cutler describes the formidable range of mental tasks we carry out, all at once, with astonishing speed and accuracy, when we listen. These include evaluating probabilities arising from the structure of the native vocabulary, tracking information to locate the boundaries between words, paying attention to the way the words are pronounced, and assessing not only the sounds of speech but prosodic information that spans sequences of sounds. She describes infant speech perception, the consequences of language-specific specialization for listening to other languages, the flexibility and adaptability of listening (to our native languages), and how language-specificity and universality fit together in our language processing system. Drawing on her four decades of work as a psycholinguist, Cutler documents the recent growth in our knowledge about how spoken-word recognition works and the role of language structure in this process. Her book is a significant contribution to a vibrant and rapidly developing field.

书中有些章节还谈到了清代学者的研究情况，因为现代音韵学是本土的传统学术与引进的西方学术相结合的产物，它的研究方法，一部分是从传统的音韵学继承下来的，一部分是从西方引进的，少数是近代研究者自己的发明。为了说清楚一种方法的产生条件，不免要回溯历史，谈谈来历。在必要的地方，书中就要先讲一下清朝学者的研究，尔后再谈20世纪的研究，都是因为来自传统音音乐这的研究方法大多是清朝学者发明或开始运用的，那些方法的产生就完全是为了研究汉语古音，是近代音音乐这的先导，不能不讲。从西方引进的方法也简单说一下来历，但那些方法本来不是为研究汉语而发明的，早期的用例不在汉语，所以不必多讲。
本书虽然以“论”冠名，但对读者最有用的部分可能还是所“述‘的内容，即前辈与当代学者们的研究实践，各种方法的实践过程。所谓“论”也者，不过是作者一得之愚、一已之见，仅供读者参考而已。
