《货币哲学》出版于1900年，是西美尔为数不多的大部头著作之一，主要阐释自近代以来的货币经济现象以及与它相关的社会文化现象。《货币哲学》并非一部纯粹的经济学著作，分析货币的社会经济机制不是西美尔货币理论的重点，货币及其制度化的现代发展对文化生活的影响，尤其是对人的内在生 活、精神品格的影响，才是西美尔货币文化-现代性理论的要旨所在。
