本书是以认知人类学的视角来研究中国宗教文化传承的一番尝试。本书的立论基础，源于法国人类学家 Dan Sperber在新演化论（ Neoevolutionsim）和社会生物学（Sociobiology）的启发下提出、倡导的“文化传承（ Cultural Transmission）研究”，主张“传承”是解释文化的演化与现状的核心范畴，并进而提出“表征的流行病学(Epidemiology of Representation）”模型来将其操作化。这也是中文世界里第一本运用这一理论视角和方法来研究中国宗教现象的人类学著作。

An eminent anthropologist examines the foundings of the first celibate Buddhist monasteries among the Sherpas of Nepal in the early twentieth century - a religious development that was a major departure from 'folk' or 'popular' Buddhism. Sherry Ortner is the first to integrate social scientific and historical modes of analysis in a study of the Sherpa monasteries and one of the very few to attempt such an account for Buddhist monasteries anywhere. Combining ethnographic and oral-historical methods, she scrutinizes the interplay of political and cultural factors in the events culminating in the foundings. Her work constitutes a major advance both in our knowledge of Sherpa Buddhism and in the integration of anthropological and historical modes of analysis. At the theoretical level, this book contributes to an emerging theory of 'practice', an explanation of the relationship between human intentions and actions on the one hand, and the structures of society and culture that emerge from and feed back upon those intentions and actions on the other. Religion in Modern Taiwan takes a new look at Taiwan's current religious traditions and their fortunes during the 20th century. Beginning with the cession of Taiwan to Japan in 1895 and the currents of modernisation that accompanied it, the essays move on to explore the developments that have taken place as Buddhists, Daoists, Christians, non-Han aborigines, and others have confronted, resisted, and adapted to (even thrived in) the many upheavals of the modern period. An overview of Taiwan's current religious scene is followed by Charles Jones' comprehensive look at the state of religion in the country prior to the end of World War II and the return of Taiwan to Chinese sovereignty. The remaining essays probe aspects of change within individual religious traditions.
