A composer and cellist who’s honed a singular synthesis of composition, orchestration and improvisation, Janel Leppin is best known as half of the experimental duo Janel and Anthony, which she co-leads with her husband guitarist Anthony Pirog. here have been many attempts to revisit the music of Charles Mingus ever since his death in 1979 (with several of the groups being called Mingus Dynasty), but this is by far the most successful of all the Mingus tribute albums. The 20-piece Mingus Big Band is an all-star unit comprised of mostly younger musicians who have spent several years really studying and getting inside the great bassist's music. The band's debut CD has such spirited soloists as baritonist Ronnie Cuber (who introduces "Nostalgia in Times Square" with a memorable story of his first encounter with Mingus), trumpeters Randy Brecker, Ryan Kisor, and Jack Walrath, trombonists Art Baron, Frank Lacy, and Dave Taylor, altoist Steve Slagle, tenors Chris Potter, Craig Handy, and John Stubblefield, and pianist Kenny Drew, Jr., among others. The ten Mingus compositions are all given memorable treatments, particularly "Moanin'," the witty and somewhat nutty "Don't Be Afraid, the Clown's Afraid Too," and "Weird Nightmare." The new arrangements by Sy Johnson, Jack Walrath, and Ronnie Cuber are quite crowded and very much in the spirit of Mingus. This was one of the top recordings to be released in 1994 and is essential for all serious jazz collections.

Those who know the duo will appreciate that every Binker and Moses performance is distinct in itself, characterised by a mutual spontaneity and a tireless interrogation of the infinite. This 6-track recording, taken from their Journey to the Mountain of Forever album launch at the iconic Total Refreshment Centre back in 2017, is a whole new interpretation of the studio album's first disc (with the opening tune clocking in at a full 17 minutes of semi-free exploration.) The audience's excitement, a sound-bed of whoops and yells, is heard intermittently throughout and only adds to the incredible vibe - a tonic perhaps to these gig-dry, restricted times.

After some years spent roaming the Valley of the Ultrablacks and exploring the Mountain of Forever, (where they narrowly avoided the lethal traps of The Voice of Besbunu), Binker and Moses are back with a new offering.
'Feeding The Machine' is their first studio album in five years, due for release on February 25th on all formats.
Recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios by legendary, GRAMMY-winning producer Hugh Padgham, the new record features honorary third member Max Luthert on tape loops and electronics, moving their sound into an entirely new dimension that crosses into ambient, minimalism and experimental electronic territories.
With the use of modular synths and sampling, traditional melody and song structures are left behind as the musicians are pushed creatively to respond and in turn, 'feed the machine'.

The third album from Ill Considered has been a revelatory part of the journey for its members. While the first album was completely improvised in a two hour session involving all four musicians and no pre-written tunes, the second album was a live gig recorded at The Crypt Jazz Club, London, involving mainly compositions ( taken from the first album, as well as new tunes and some from Wildflower (the other band in which Leon Brichard and Idris Rahman collaborate with drummer Tom Skinner). The creation of Ill Considered 3 was quite different again.
A session was booked at the same studio in which Ill Considered’s first album was created, and the four musicians met (this time with Satin Singh on percussion) with a view to recording some pre-written melodies as well as some fresh, improvised material.
The band soon realised that although the pre-written tunes were to some degree working nicely, there was no comparison with the vibe, energy, spontaneity and overall freedom of the fully improvised material. There is a musical freedom that this particular combination of musicians needs to express - throwing caution to the wind they create soundscapes, atmospheres, dreamy groove based journeys immediately in the moment, held together by deeply felt musical interaction and the interspersion of hooky bass lines and melodies. Using simple but effective motifs, the band again manage to build from delicate, intimate moments of emotion to screaming climaxes and drum and bass inspired head-bangers.
Meditative and spiritual in essence, there are a wide range of textures in this album:
Djinn has an ethereal, mystical calm about it, whilst the bass harmonics and minimal percussion of Nada Brahma give an almost Gamelan-like texture. Delusion and Meditation have a head-nodding, deep and dirty jazz-funk-inspired restless energy punctuated by abstract melodic hooks that stay with you long after you’ve finished listening.
Along with the improvised band tracks, there are three short solo tracks from bass, drums and sax - again created in the spirit of freedom.

nspired by decades of travelling the world as bandmates and friends, Paulo Morello, Mulo Francel and Sven Faller present Living Is Easy, Mostly (March 18th), an album of original songs drenched in the sounds of everywhere from South America to 20th Century Europe.
And whilst the three musicians display a level of skill and technique developed over many years on their respective instruments, it’s the feeling of comfort and the lust for life which emanates from their interplay and lives on long after the music stops.
Each a composer in their own right, the collaboration brings together their combined experiences as travelling musicians; modern, south-american influenced harmony, foxtrot grooves from the early 20th Century, German gypsy-jazz, and old school American blues are integrated effortlessly into the trio’s repertoire.
The years of accompanying one another in travel and in music are more apparent with every beat. Guitarist Paulo Morello (“as if George Benson had moved to Rio de Janeiro!”) and Echo award-winning saxophonist Mulu Francel have long toured together with German super-group Quadro Nuevo, whilst bassist Sven Faller Morello joined forces alongside Belgian great Philip Catherine.
The joy their ‘work’ brings them is emphasised by the music’s playful and sometimes humorous nature; perhaps best exhibited by the piece “One More Gin For Elizabeth”, which talks of the goal to buy Queen Elizabeth a drink at the bar!
With a combined touring history which takes in most of the world and includes credits from Larry Coryell and Pat Martino to Airto Moriera and Billy Cobham, it’s perhaps this comment from the three musicians which best sums up the recording:
“Whenever we get together we have a blast!”
