Tchaikovsky’s musical scores are lyrical, romantic and deeply emotional. This film endeavours to put the composer in context alongside Tolstoy as one of the most celebrated Russians of his time, examining his continuing significance in Russia today, and visiting locations which were important in Tchaikovsky’s life. His life is scoured to reveal an abortive marriage, his true feelings about homosexuality and how this may have been expressed in his music. Contributors include pianists Mikhail Rudy and Yevgeni Kissin, violinist Maxim Vengerov, conductor Valery Gergiev, ballerina Natalia Makarova, opera director Graham Vick and the Tchaikovsky-loving tram driver, Valentina.

This landmark series presents the lives and works of seven musical giants from the Baroque era to the twentieth century. It examines the backgrounds, influences and relationships that make these seven composers part of the very fabric of the history of western music. This series was made as a result of the BBC's hugely successful and popular series "The Genius of Mozart". Both series follow the same format, a cross between a drama and a documentary (docudrama), each series is made of three episodes of an hour each, and each is mixed with insightful pieces of narration by the popular conductor/composer/presenter Charles Hazlewood.
"The Genius of Mozart" was a big hit for the BBC, attracting masses of enthusiastic viewers of all walks of life. With this in mind you would think that a similar programme based on Beethoven would attract a similarly popular response. However this was not the case. This series was not viewed by a large audience, there have been no repeats or DVD releases and I was shocked to visit it's IMDb page to discover there were absolutely no user comments, (I write this now wondering if it will ever be read).
In brief, I remember watching this series and being absolutely blown away, It was so powerful I can still remember it in detail. In my opinion it is amongst the best work the BBC have ever produced and I am extremely saddened that very few people experienced the same joy I did from this series. I think "Beethoven" has become a lost gem and I will use the remainder of this user comment to argue my case.
The series was beautifully photographed and directed. The series was filled with a beautifully desaturated palette (with a prominent ochre for interior scenes) which gave a stark, imposing temperament. Along with this there were wonderful intersections with diffuses of aged yet colourful soft focus imagery, giving a romantic yet nostalgic feel, like a lost love. It was a breathtaking contrast of these romantic diffuses with desaturated scenes, to me it evoked Beethoven's isolation and difficulty to keep a grip on reality.
The story and dialogue was fantastically well written. It powerfully evoked the turmoil, isolation and despair of Beethoven. It was a highly accurate historical portrayal along with a caliber and sophistication of writing which seemed to transcend it's historical obligations giving a highly emotional, gritty and moving experience.

Now, for the first time, this testment is made available with a sound and picture reporduction faithful to our original conception.
Glenn Gould's first recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations in 1955 had made his name legendary. This film, shot in New York in April and May 1981, marks his life--as if interpolated between the two peaceful Arias and the two recordings, the one opening, the other closing his career--with a symbol of cyclic perfection.

希拉莉（瑞切尔•格里菲斯 饰）与积琪琳（艾米丽•沃森 饰）是一对感情深厚的姐妹。姐姐希拉莉很有吹长笛的天分，积琪琳看着姐姐拿到了许多荣耀也不甘落后，经过艰苦练习后，积琪琳的大提琴也有了很大的进步。在一次比赛中，两人分别获得了第一，但希拉莉开始嫉妒妹妹，纵使两人的感情没有受到影响，可是希拉莉的音乐之路开始触礁。

本片根据澳大利亚钢琴家戴维•赫尔夫戈特（David Helfgott）的真人真事改编。
生于犹太人家庭的戴维（Alex Rafalowicz 饰）自幼便展现过人的天赋，他的父亲望子成龙，逼迫戴维苦练钢琴，甚至不切实际地让儿子挑战号称“世界上最难演奏的作品” 《D小调第三钢琴协奏曲》。戴维在父亲的阴影下苦不堪言，而父亲为防止家庭破裂又千方百计阻止儿子外出求学，最终父子走向决裂。
