本书的形成源于哈佛大学人类学系资深教授华琛(James L. Watson)在费正清中国研究中心发起的“中国社会饮食消费格局”研究项目。九名作者中包括华琛本人,华琛教授的老同事,六人是华琛先生的弟子,因而论文相互呼应的程度非同寻常,在文集类书籍中实属难得。
全书围绕五个议题铺开而论:一是改革开放后中国人的饮食营养,二是儿童食品产业在中国的兴起,三是国家科学育儿话语,四是全球消费文化对中国家庭生活的渗透,五是饮食变迁伴随的社会认同和价值观变迁。
“小皇帝”一词向来被联想到被娇生惯养的独生子女,但所有作者对此都采取了慎重对待的态度,没有简单粗暴地认定独子女必然会有这样或那样的心理问题或某些固化偏执的行为习惯。作者们将更具有学术价值的讨论集中在一连串的具体问题上。例如,郭于华关心的食品和饮食习惯所代表的代际差异问题与景军讨论的科学话语、宗教信念、电视广告在儿童食品消费领域的博弈问题都分析了儿童、家长、老人三代人的代际关系。

Chinese Senior Migrants and the Globalization of Retirement 豆瓣

The 21st century has seen growing numbers of seniors turning to migration in response to newfound challenges to traditional forms of retirement and old-age support, such as increased longevity, demographically aging populations, and global neoliberal trends reducing state welfare. Chinese-born migrants to the U.S. serve as an exemplary case of this trend, with 30% of all migrants since 1990 being at least 60 years old. This book tells their story, arguing that they demonstrate the significance of age as a mediating factor that is fundamentally important for considering how migration is experienced. The subjects of this study are situated at the crossroads of Chinese immigrant and Chinese-American experiences, embodying many of the ambiguities and paradoxes that complicate common understandings of each group. These are older individuals who have waited their whole lives to migrate to the U.S. to rejoin family but often experience unanticipated family conflict when they arrive. They are retirees living at the social and economic margins of American society who nonetheless find significant opportunities to achieve meaningful retired lifestyles. They are members of a diaspora spanning vast regional and ideological differences, yet their wellbeing hinges on everyday interactions with others in this diverse community. Their stories highlight the many possibilities for mutual engagement that connect Chinese and American ways of being and belonging in the world.

Prototype Nation offers a rich transnational analysis of how the promise of democratized innovation and entrepreneurial life has shaped China’s governance and global image. With historical precision and ethnographic detail, Silvia Lindtner reveals how a growing distrust in Western models of progress and development, including Silicon Valley and the tech industry after the financial crisis of 2007–08, shaped the rise of the global maker movement and the vision of China as a “new frontier” of innovation.
Lindtner’s investigations draw on more than a decade of research in experimental work spaces—makerspaces, coworking spaces, innovation hubs, hackathons, and startup weekends—in China, the United States, Africa, Europe, Taiwan, and Singapore, as well as in key sites of technology investment and industrial production—tech incubators, corporate offices, and factories. She examines how the ideals of the maker movement, to intervene in social and economic structures, served the technopolitical project of prototyping a “new” optimistic, assertive, and global China. In doing so, Lindtner demonstrates that entrepreneurial living influences governance, education, policy, investment, and urban redesign in ways that normalize the persistence of sexism, racism, colonialism, and labor exploitation.

Fleeing the murderous Pol Pot regime, Cambodian refugees arrive in America as at once the victims and the heroes of America's misadventures in Southeast Asia; and their encounters with American citizenship are contradictory as well. Service providers, bureaucrats, and employers exhort them to be self-reliant, individualistic, and free, even as the system and the culture constrain them within terms of ethnicity, race, and class. "Buddha Is Hiding" tells the story of Cambodian Americans experiencing American citizenship from the bottom-up. Based on extensive fieldwork in Oakland and San Francisco, the study puts a human face on how American institutions - of health, welfare, law, police, church, and industry - affect minority citizens as they negotiate American culture and re-interpret the American dream. In her earlier book, "Flexible Citizenship", anthropologist Aihwa Ong wrote of elite Asians shuttling across the Pacific. This parallel study tells the very different story of 'the other Asians' whose route takes them from refugee camps to California's inner-city and high-tech enclaves. In "Buddha Is Hiding" we see these refugees becoming new citizen-subjects through a dual process of being-made and self-making, balancing religious salvation and entrepreneurial values as they endure and undermine, absorb and deflect conflicting lessons about welfare, work, medicine, gender, parenting, and mass culture. Trying to hold on to the values of family and home culture, Cambodian Americans nonetheless often feel that 'Buddha is hiding'. Tracing the entangled paths of poor and rich Asians in the American nation, Ong raises new questions about the form and meaning of citizenship in an era of globalization.

我們以為,醫護人員給予病人越多的資訊、越詳盡的解釋、越透明的知情同意,醫病關係就越順暢,病人越能做出正確的決定,過著更理想的生活,但實情比這個還複雜。
過去,我們共同抵抗醫療霸權,擘畫出更多病人的主動性,但「選擇的邏輯」並沒有打造出對病人最適合的照護情境。在「選擇的邏輯」下,病人表達了意願,做出了選擇之後,一切就要自行負責,無論疾病多麼不可預期,日常多麼出乎意料,一旦事情出了差錯,病患只能抱持悔恨和罪惡感。
透過荷蘭某家醫院的民族誌田野觀察,作者以糖尿病患為研究對象,結合哲學、人類學、社會學等面向,提煉出「照護的邏輯」。照護不只是「溫柔的愛」,在這邏輯之下,「行動」先於「判斷」,「實作」先於「事實」,沒有什麼事情是被保證的,沒有什麼決定是做了就能心想事成的。病患、醫護人員、技術、儀器等各項元素在日常中不斷協調、不斷修補(doctoring),我們得持續堅定地做些嘗試。生活(名詞)的好壞不是重點,要點是如何「過生活」(動詞)。
照護的邏輯講求「關注」,在病患做了選擇之後,仍不斷地給予關注,才能彌補選擇之後,病患被施予的「忽略」。照護的邏輯期望病人主動積極,醫護人員實踐醫療專業更多的可能性。不過,不要超過極限,因為我們終究得(學會)放手,面對死亡。
作者長期蹲點荷蘭地區醫院,用人類學之眼,加上哲學思辨,凝視現代人的重要疾病——糖尿病,以此為觀察焦點,提出「照護的邏輯」之下的病患該如何自處,外人又該如何協助讓他們與疾病共存。這本書描繪一個理想的照護體系,適合醫護人員、政策制定者和社會科學愛好者作為思想的種子。

The Genealogical Science analyzes the scientific work and social implications of the flourishing field of genetic history. A biological discipline that relies on genetic data in order to reconstruct the geographic origins of contemporary populations—their histories of migration and genealogical connections to other present-day groups—this historical science is garnering ever more credibility and social reach, in large part due to a growing industry in ancestry testing.
In this book, Nadia Abu El-Haj examines genetic history’s working assumptions about culture and nature, identity and biology, and the individual and the collective. Through the example of the study of Jewish origins, she explores novel cultural and political practices that are emerging as genetic history’s claims and “facts” circulate in the public domain and illustrates how this historical science is intrinsically entangled with cultural imaginations and political commitments. Chronicling late-nineteenth- to mid-twentieth-century understandings of race, nature, and culture, she identifies continuities and shifts in scientific claims, institutional contexts, and political worlds in order to show how the meanings of biological difference have changed over time. In so doing she gives an account of how and why it is that genetic history is so socially felicitous today and elucidates the range of understandings of the self, individual and collective, this scientific field is making possible. Less than a half century ago, China experienced a cataclysmic famine, which was particularly devastating in the countryside. For older people in rural areas, food now symbolizes everything from misery and extreme want to relative abundance. Young people, on the other hand, have a different relationship to food. Many young rural Chinese are migrating to rapidly industrializing cities for work, happy to leave behind the backbreaking labor associated with peasant agriculture.
Bitter and Sweet examines the role of food in one rural Chinese community, as it has shaped everyday lives over the course of several tumultuous decades. In her superb ethnographic accounts, Ellen Oxfeld compels us to reexamine some of the dominant frameworks that have permeated recent scholarship on contemporary China, work that describes increasing dislocation and individualism and a lack of moral centeredness.
