2024年1月21日 评论 a review of 丧尸乐园2 - A director delivering a sequel to his one celebrated movie made 10 years prior after having put out a string of disappointments in-between? If that doesn't reek of desperation then I don't know what does. Right from the very first trailer that released you could tell this was little more than an incredibly sad attempt from Ruben Fleischer to restore some goodwill with moviegoers following the lackluster quality of his previous few showings that would feature severely dumbed-down humor in lieu of good ideas. Wasn't quite expecting it to be this bad though. You put the two Zombieland s side-by-side and it's genuinely insulting how greatly this cheapens the original by going for only the most braindead, lowest common denominator jokes completely devoid of anything approaching wit that feel very much the product of the Marvel blockbuster formula curse that's been plaguing the industry. So I'm sure this is all a big hit with the MCU generation. As for the rest of us looking for more of that clever comedy and surprising heart found in its predecessor? Skip this and pretend it never happened. Double Tap is moronic, cartoonish trash that doesn't even get the undead action right. At least there's the, honestly somewhat obligatory feeling, mid-credits Bill Murray cameo, I guess?

2023年6月9日 评论 a review of 玉米地的小孩 - Bad. Amusingly so, but bad nonetheless. It's crazy that they've made 10+ of these and not one of them has had a decent budget. This remake/reimagining of the 1984 kind of, yet not really classic gender-swaps Isaac and toys around with some classic Stephen King thematic staples such as neglected youth falling prey to an evil entity while their parents are too busy being degenerates to fulfill their maternal and paternal duties. Only unlike IT , rather than showing how this sort of negligence of nurturing can come at the expense of a child’s life the film is more about how the resulting loss of innocence could lead to embittered retaliation against the adults who failed to protect them. Or at least it sort of is… The subtext it looks to be instilling early on is quickly abandoned as the whole thing devolves into the most unintentionally ludicrous adolescent takeover plot I’ve witnessed thus far. You know what one of the factors behind the original CotC ’s success is? It’s not solely that the concept of kids killing all the authority figures out in the sticks (Eerrrrr… stalks) is strangely compelling. It’s how that movie largely took place after the slaughter had already occurred. This adaptation however covers the events that transpired when the youngsters decided to purge their small Nebraskan town of everyone old enough to vote, and the results are just ridiculous. Seeing that a gaggle of maybe 15 prepubescents somehow managed to subdue a fairly large group of fully grown men and women, which the movie conveniently skips over the details of, with barely a tweenager among them requires more suspension of disbelief than any of us should be willing to give. It’s one of the aspects, alongside a variety of particularly odd moments such as a scene where a town hall full of middle-aged men spend 5 or so minutes laughing in an overly exaggerated manner at their future murderers like something out of a high school bullying flick for example, that leads to this revamp coming off as inadvertently silly. There’s the occasional decently gory sight and Kate Goyer giving one a heck of a fantastic performance (best onscreen tbh), but it’s not enough to make for an effectual piece of horror in the face of all the goofiness. Plus, they turned “He Who Walks Behind the Rows” into Corn Groot. LOL! While the mix of bizarre, outright crappy directorial decisions and ineffective storytelling can keep you watching in a state of stupefied disbelief, it narrowly misses that trash cinema treasure status which could have moderately redeemed it. So despite a few interesting touches including swapping the stranded traveling couple protagonists of its predecessor out for an otherwise college-bound local teen trying to bring an end to the brutality, we’re left with an update you’re better off skipping. Torch the crops. This season’s harvest is rotten.

2023年3月5日 评论 a review of 哥本哈根牛仔 - Refn is just screwing with everyone at this point. Like, the most reasonable explanation as to why this mess is the way that it is, is that he's simply taking the piss here. Either that or he's finally lost his mind completely after sitting for so long in an ego-inflating echo chamber of praise from a blindly loyal fanbase comprised of people so deluded they're convinced that the total non-storytelling found here is another example of his filmmaking brilliance. Whatever the case, Copenhagen Cowboy is terrible. For roughly 5 hours the Drive director engages in all his established little fetishes and quirks with no real regard for forming a legitimate narrative, direction, or point for the ensuing six episodes until the briefest hint of a focus-establishing conflict begins to arise in its final moments. Unfortunately, its last-second arrival means that any hope of seeing a conclusion lies with a potential second season that as of right now doesn't seem likely of ever being ordered (not that this deserves one). Essentially, it's looking like Too Old to Die Young all over again, but at least that was interesting. After a painfully dull start, you can begin to notice the barest signs of a pulse in its latter half as that's when the action starts to pick up. It doesn't make the material any more enjoyable, however. Something about the content in this feels sick and wrong. Not because of stuff like the director's typical graphic sexuality or gruesome brutality either. It's actually rather tame in both of those departments. What violence there is comes off as unintentionally silly and ridiculous as Refn tries to portray the tiny, thin as a rail Angela Bundalovic as some kind of kung fu master capable of taking out much larger men in poorly choreographed fight sequences. It's one of the many aspects of Copenhagen Cowboy that's just plain goofy, but what's weird is that it feels like none of this was played in an appropriate tongue-in-cheek manner. So much of what happens here is legitimately dumb to the degree where you may get a sense of second-hand embarrassment when you realize that Refn is apparently trying to be serious with it. Not even his penchant for visual flair shines through. His neon tones clash unpleasantly with the rundown backgrounds creating a viewing experience that's ugly, as well as gross. Thematically it's the same "all men are bad and do nothing but hurt women, except me though because I made this!" dreck every self-important, wannabe progressive white man who's received a little bit of critical acclaim seems to make at some point or another these days (i.e. Alex Garland). After the credits rolled on the final episode, all I was left with other than a bad taste in my mouth was the question of how after years of producing seemingly nothing but celebrated works before 2013 Refn could have been responsible for this ? All I've watched beforehand were two of his other more divisive offerings, Neon Demon and Too Old to Die Young , so it appears I'm going to need to dive back into his pre- Only God Forgives /fall from grace filmography to uncover exactly how we got here. It's time to go down the Refn rabbit hole it seems. In the meantime, I hope the man stops trying to make series and goes back feature-length films, because they clearly aren't his strong suit.

2026年1月28日 评论 a review of 德古拉元年 - Dracula's origin story tries to combine history with horror. However, what we get is a swords-and-shields war film that tries to awkwardly juggle those two elements in order to give reasoning for why it's conflict even exists in the first place. The result is a movie that's more talking than fighting. Had the dialog been better and the action more appealing that might not have been a bad thing. In the end though we are left with a really boring experience. The lines the talented cast (two Game of Thrones stars are present) are given are unbelievably cheesy and just awkwardly written. Luke Evans plays a hero who goes to the dark side for noble reasons, but there's no moral conflict. Our lead actress Sarah Gadon can't act. As a result there's no one to really root for in this film.  The Dracula aspect isn't even well used. It's part horror film, but there's no horror. Dracula simply doesn't feel like Dracula. His powers are on display, but they aren't exciting to witness and they don't add any spice to the lackluster battle scenes. Director Gary Shore tries hard to dazzle with special effects that present Dracula as a super powered foe not to be messed with, but ultimately what we get are brief, yawn inducing affairs.  The reboot of Universals "Monsters" universe is just plain bad. It's a poor start that's lacking in thrills. Perhaps it's biggest sin is that it doesn't tap into the horror aspect at all. Simply making the sky black, the world gray, and having bats everywhere doesn't cut it. It's not a monster movie at all. This vampire has no bite.

2026年1月28日 评论 a review of 超胆侠 - Before finally finding success in the MCU, Marvel had a rough time bringing their characters to life on the big-screen with the same level of success Raimi's Spider-Man had. The Ben Affleck led Daredevil is the perfect example of that fact. It certainly tries to be good, but ultimately just gets in it's own way at every turn. The problem is that it's just so cheesy. The comics it's based on are dark, gritty, and violent. It looks early on like this is going to be the case here too. However, as soon as that first action sequence hits and we see the man without fear comically flying across the room the promise those noir-esque visuals initially held quickly goes out the window. It's all downhill from there. The action is a big problem. It's just too goofy and cartoonish. I honestly can't tell if the director was trying to make these scenes have a humorous tinge to them or not. Whatever the case it's certainly there. It's nice to see a superhero movie have a little blood though. You'll also see characters getting explicitly stabbed or having their bones broken. So at the very least Daredevil has a little more edge to it than other superhero flicks. A good thing as it fits the character. The movie is sort of barebones in the plot department. Things move slow, the conclusion is rushed, and there are quite a few moments that just don't make any sense. The characters are fine though. The standouts are Jon Favreau as the comic relief and the sorely missed Michael Clarke Duncan who plays the film's underdeveloped main villain. It's also nice to see Jennifer Garner being so incredibly sexy onscreen. Everyone else is fine, but just kind of there. Of course they all get their fair share of bad dialog and one-liners so terrible you just can't help but laugh. Speaking of laughter, that's something you may find yourself doing more times than you would expect. Unfortunately a lot of them are at the film's expense. As I've mentioned before, it's incredibly cheesy. This leads to plenty of unintentionally funny moments. When you bring the soundtrack into the equation though, it becomes outright hilarious. The movie uses a lot of hard rock as sort of a try-hard way to come off as cool, edgy, and capture that dark tone of the source material. It just doesn't work and bolsters the already cheesy tone. I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the director's choice to use an Evanescence song during a funeral scene. I just couldn't take it seriously. Same for an already goofy action sequence where Elektra is training by awkwardly chopping up sandbags. Yet another Evanescence song and more unintentional hilarity. Now, to be clear it's not that they are bad songs. I like Evanescence. It's just that the band's material already has a certain stigma to it. Their song Bring Me to Life is practically a meme for crying out loud and that's the one they used in the movie! Now, I know back in 2003 when this movie came out that wasn't the case for the song, but there's no escaping the how goofy it feels to try and use it for a serious moment today. Same goes for the whole soundtrack really. It's just clear that each song was picked to try and make the movie feel edgy. A whole heck of a lot edgier than it actually ended up being. Oh, Daredevil. Bless it's heart it tries. It's clear that actual effort did go into this, but ultimately it was misguided and failed to do the character justice. There are a few good things here and there and I mean, heck, you can laugh at it, but it's just so bad there's no reason to watch it unless you just want to kind of torture yourself for about and hour and forty-three minutes. It would have been outright amazing to see a genuinely brutal, dark superhero movie hit the scene back in the early 2000s. Daredevil certainly tried. Unfortunately what we got ended up having the same tone as the Schumacher Batman movies, only somehow with extra Velveeta. That's just not a good fit for Daredevil or his fans, and neither is this movie as a result.

2022年12月26日 评论 a review of 真·三国无双 - Your typical Hong Kong martial arts fantasy dad movie. The only difference being this one is based off of a video game. Having been derived from a popular musou franchise, the film comes with the promise of getting the chance to see a single dude slice his way through massive armies all by himself. While there are hints of that, this adaptation actually proves more faithful to the series' roots as a Soulcalibur -esque fighter by favoring one-on-one duels over grand displays of soldiers getting slaughtered in the thousands. Regardless, the battles are still a moderately entertaining spectacle even with the rather middling CGI I've come to associate with Eastern cinema. Unfortunately, there just aren't enough of them. What few professional reviews I've found have all called the plot incomprehensible. I'm not sure if that's due to some legitimate issue(s) with script or simply the sad result of how bloody hard it is to pay attention to any of this. Like most Chinese feudal/imperial war flicks, the experience is burdened with a lot of overwrought storytelling that takes up most of the runtime. It actually favors trying to be a boring, conversation and dialog-heavy (not to mention, highly fictionalized) historical drama over showcasing larger amounts of its amusingly over-the-top wuxia combat, which shows the filmmakers severely misunderstood their target audience. What's worse is that by the ending you realize that nothing of consequence truly happened as not a single of the conflict's multiple threads is resolved when the credits start to roll, leading to a feeling like you just wasted your time. Despite all my complaining, there are things Dynasty Warriors gets right. It's an absolute treat for the eyes having been shot in some gorgeous locations and featuring cool looking, if ridiculous action sequences that are usually accompanied by appropriately energetic butt rock guitar riffs. I'll also admit that my dislike of it may only stem from it personally not being my thing. There's obviously a following out there for this kind of stuff as evident by the fact that they keep getting made and finding their way over here to the West. I know I've seen my father watching plenty of similar offerings in the living room on many a lazy Sunday afternoon. So hey, maybe tell your dad about it next time he's looking for something to stream. I certainly will mine.

2022年10月7日 评论 a review of 养鬼吃人 - The return of the early '90s, late 2000s teen slasher flick. Right down to the clothing and neo-gothic aesthetics. This reboot has more in common with something like Final Destination than it does Clive Barker's original work. With a group of bad acting twenty-somethings getting picked off one by one by a supernatural force as they try to uncover the mystery behind why their friends are disappearing. They even included that bog-standard scene where the characters visit an old person in a hospital who has ties to the last time such an event happened for some cryptic, barely helpful hints. As such, the whole thing feels incredibly generic. The franchise's usual inventive violence and grotesque gore are nowhere to be found. The majority of the kills, when it bothers showing them at all, disappointingly consist almost entirely of victims getting impaled and hung in the air by chain hooks that shoot in from somewhere off-screen again and again ad nauseum. The BDSM element has been shed as well. The Cenobites sadomasochistic nature is barely alluded to and they haven't been summoned by straight hedonistic desire this time around either. Their new appearances are also cool on paper, yet strangely goofy in execution due in part to lighting being too bright. And no, I'm not one of those people just hating on the movie because Pinhead is being portrayed by a trans-woman now. In The Hellbound Heart , the source material responsible for these films, the synonymous villain was described as "androgynous with a feminine voice." So those crying foul over the recasting for reasons of "LoRe" really don't have a leg to stand on, as it's not like Jamie Clayton is an any less faithful or appropriate choice for the role than Doug Bradley was based on that. She does end up coming off as far flatter and much less intimidating than her predecessor, but that may simply be the result of her having not been given much to do. This revival seeks to correct the mistakes made by a long string of poorly received sequels that only horror's most hardcore devotees and completionists beared witness to. It doesn't try to retell one of the old stories with a new twist, but instead does something completely new with the brand. Unfortunately, its reinvention just serves to further strip the property of its identity and soul. Creating an ultimately forgettable film that's most noteworthy aspect is its creative creature designs.

2022年8月28日 评论 a review of 洛基 第一季 - If there's one thing I have to give the first batch of Disney+'s cinematic universe tie-in shows credit for, it's actually having legitimate ramifications on their theater released counterparts in a way their older Netflix siblings did not. WandaVision explains a big character change in Scarlet Witch that viewers will witness in the latest Doctor Strange for example, while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier straight up crowns the next Captain America. Loki 's significance meanwhile is that it marks the birth of a concept that plays a huge role in two of the biggest films of "Phase Four," and one that will likely have a huge impact on the future of the MCU moving forward. Which is why it is so massively disappointing that it's not very enjoyable to watch. It's got a great premise that sees the trickster god getting begrudgingly inducted into a secret organization that investigates temporal anomalies to ensure the timeline doesn't get out of control. It could have led to a great buddy cop-esque serial as Hiddleston and the incredibly charming Owen Wilson fought anonymously behind the curtain to keep reality from unwinding. Unfortunately, the very nature of how this new faction and the rules of its plane of existence work are incredibly complicated, and the series painstakingly explains nearly every little detail of it. This causes the first three episodes to feel like 90% exposition, as the characters engage in extremely lengthy elucidatory conversations with the occasional self-reflective whining from the titular antihero. It isn't until the fourth and fifth episodes that the plot is finally able to get going for real and begin indulging in all the exciting variant weirdness of its central narrative conceit, before slipping back into the long-winded explanatory talk in the particularly cosmic finale. The problem is that none of this is as interesting as the writers seem to think it is, and arguably there are parts of it that STILL don't make any sense when all is said and done. Loki does carry some serious weight in the MCU thanks to the events of its conclusion, but the big defining moment loses some of its impact if you've already seen the two movies it most directly affects thus far. Mix that with how plain boring it is and as of yet there's no reason to consider this essential viewing.

2021年11月26日 评论 a review of 新生化危机 - I was initially annoyed when I heard the news that the Resident Evil film series was going to get a reboot so soon after having dominated theater screens for about 15 years. You could hardly blame Sony Pictures and Constantin given how much money they made though. The one silver lining was that fans of the source material might finally get a movie with a little fidelity. It's no secret that Paul W.S. Anderson's hexalogy had almost nothing to do with the games it was supposedly based on. He might have borrowed a monster design or a name here and there, but for the most part created his own mutated beast complete with an original protagonist and everything. Well, upon having now watched this revival of the franchise's cinematic half I can state for certain that gamers have at long last received an adaptation that actually has something to do with the stuff they've played. The heroes are all familiar faces like Leon Kennedy, Jill Valentine, and Chris Redfield while the story sees them uncovering the secrets of Spencer Mansion and, of course, surviving the outbreak in Raccoon City. Both locations found in the original two PS1 classics. It even fully embraces the property's horror roots by going heavy on the scare attempts rather than just focusing primarily on the action like its predecessors did. Unfortunately, all this faithfulness is kind of wasted given that the feature presentation itself isn't very good. When the characters are shooting their way through the undead to try and escape their doomed town, it's alright. Things go straight down the toilet though the second someone opens their mouth, usually to utter a line of profanity, or the narrative tries to give an explanation behind the whole scenario. The writing is just so bad with the new takes on the cast turning some members of it into bumbling idiots for an intended comedic effect that feels wildly out of place, as well as there being elements that make no sense like how the entire police force is the only portion of the local population to be unaffected by the "Umbrella" pharmaceutical company's deranged experiment for some reason. There are aspects I can praise. The set design is fantastic with a lot of interesting little details to pick out in the backgrounds. Every environment manages to capture a vibe and atmosphere that reminded me of what terrifying Playstation gems I have managed to play, such as the first Silent Hill , and watching the survivors battle groups of great looking zombies in their cramped interiors can be genuinely tense as Johannes Roberts has a knack for crafting unsettling scenarios. The score is also fantastic. It's got some serious issues with the plotting and dialogue however, and they're enough to derail the entire experience. Perhaps this will go over better with someone who has a greater appreciation for the works that inspired it. Personally, I've only ever touched the 5th, 6th, and Revelations spin-off titles so I'm sure the majority of the Easter Eggs and parts recreated onscreen missed their intended mark with me. Still, even if you do manage to pick up on everything that doesn't change the fact that it's largely cheap fan service in lieu of legitimate quality. Not saying that isn't enough to provide a good time, but in my mind it can't save this from somehow being the worst Resident Evil flick. I'd be down to attend a sequel regardless.

2021年11月19日 评论 a review of - A cheap Unfriended knockoff where a couple of highschool girls get their supernatural comeuppance after posting hateful words on a dead chick's Facebook page. Notable for featuring performances from a pre- To All the Boys... Noah Centineo and a YouTuber known more for his many controversies than actually entertaining his fans. Honestly, I watched this to see just how egregiously terrible a movie starring Logan Paul would be only to end up surprised that, not only can the dude legitimately act, while still bad it's not nearly as awful as you may expect. Director Tim Shechmeister has a few decently creepy ideas that show the potential he could have in the genre if handed some better material. His frights simply lose steam the further he strays away from the technology-based scares into generic haunting tropes that take place in dark classrooms and cluttered basements as opposed to in front of computer/smartphone screens. It might also be a little too geared towards teens as outside of brief instances the world seems devoid of parents or any other real authority figures, allowing these young adults to do things like stroll into private schools they don't attend and dig through their files well into the night without a single faculty member taking issue with it. Something that destroys the believability of the writing. The biggest problem though is that it's ghost is too clearly just a girl in bad face paint. As you probably guessed long before reading this, the movie isn't worth watching. However, the thoughts your mind likely cooked up of this having a particularly loathsome lack of quality are a bit overblown. Rather, it's merely on par with your average, forgettable straight-to-DVD dreck as it plays off of a much better (and underrated) work that delivers the whole anti-cyberbullying concept more effectively. Still, I think between this and Ouija if I ever stumble across another horror flick with Ana Coto in it I'm just going to look away.

2021年11月1日 评论 a review of 猎头武士 - As someone who grew up watching Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, if there's one thing I would like to see more of it's medieval fantasy movies and for just $30,000 this looks absolutely incredible. You could argue it gets by a lot on the natural beauty of the Portuguese and Norwegian countrysides where it was shot, but the amount of detail in things like the gore and the protagonist's stunning set of armor show that legitimate effort went into bringing this production to life beyond merely picking pretty locations to point the camera(s) at. Unfortunately, you can tell that the majority of the meager budget went into the visuals as the running-time largely consists of watching Christopher Rygh complete menial tasks around his cottage in-between getting called offscreen to combat monsters in battles we never get to see as they couldn't afford to create any true action sequences. As a result it goes for an atmospheric, emotional mood with a lot of nonverbal storytelling. The problem is in spite of its enticing concept there's not enough plot to carry this approach. All of the significant information is conveyed VERY early on, including the effect this type of lifestyle is having on the character, so a lot of the developmental scenes that would have been important otherwise end up getting repeated at least twice for no real reason, leading to the brief 1h 12m this plays for feeling much longer than it actually is. Jordan Downey (director/editor) and Kevin Stewart (cinematography) have crafted an impressive example of what is possible for the appearance of a picture with limited financial backing. However, the also co-writing and producing duo's ambition exceeded their ability when it came to the size of the material as they tried to stretch into feature-length an amount of content that would have been better suited for a particularly attractive short film to unexciting results. Inadvertently giving starved sword and sorcery fans another flick with an exterior that's far more interesting than what's underneath it.

2021年2月18日 评论 a review of - I'm a big MMA fan. Even trained a little in it myself. So if any sports movie chooses to use it as its driving force over the usual suspects of boxing, football, and basketball then I'll be there every time. This, however, was not a fight of the night contender. I enjoyed the actual fights and the training segments that lead up to the big final showdown with the protagonist's pugnacious rival, even if the plot felt unfinished as we never get to see any real growth in Åkerman's character up to that point. Something that naturally causes the light dramatic element to fall flat. The problem for me was simply everything else. See, Chick Fight is also trying to be a comedy. Unfortunately, every "joke" is a bit of pointless vulgarity, rather than genuinely clever raunch. So the laughter is practically nonexistent. It also doesn't help that the entire cast outside of Alec Baldwin deliver phoned in performances that make it clear they knew exactly how sloppy the script and bad the dialog was before signing on, and are only present for the paycheck. As much as I appreciate seeing my favorite sport receive some representation in a film that isn't a documentary on an athlete's achievements, I'm left with a level of disappointment I haven't experienced with MMA since witnessing Adesanya vs. Romero. Especially since it's easy to see that had more time gone into ensuring there was a satisfying plot rather than a bunch of crappy vagina and gay jokes we could have had a top contender. When these ladies throw down it's actually kind of convincing. Sadly, this is the cinematic equivalent of an initially promising looking young prospect who showed up too overconfident, missed weight, and got knocked out in the first round.

2020年10月30日 评论 a review of 咒怨:诅咒之家 - My first and most likely last experience with the Ju-On franchise unless curiosity or recommendations get the better of me. This is horror at its most dark and depressing, and without good reason. I witnessed acts of rape and abuse only to be left wondering why. What was the point of all that? What was the message supposed to be? Upon reflection I don't believe any of it occurred for meaningful reasons. It's not that I can't handle harsh content like this. I'm no stranger to exploitation flicks. I just believe that kind of material should serve a purpose other than that of strictly shock value. Take the I Spit on Your Grave series for example. At least when the protagonists get raped there it acts as fuel for the torture porn style revenge violence that follows, however abhorrent a catalyst that may be. Things don't even really get supernatural until about 3½ episodes into this six episode miniseries. Which left me perplexed as to the inclusion of the haunted house that all of this is supposed to be centered around in the first place. It is implied that the spirit's influence is what's causing these people to do such horrible things to each other, but it's a flimsy justification and one that doesn't make sense when you consider how most of these acts of savagery appear to have been premeditated long before they ever entered the deceased's former residence. Origins is just a pointless display of human cruelty taking place under the guise of a ghost story. Its scattered array of barely connected plot threads go only to the most heartbreaking of places (if they go anywhere at all) with nothing learned along the way and it's vengeful spirit coming off as an afterthought. If this is what the rest of the Ju-On and Americanized Grudge stories are like, quite frankly you can count me out.

2020年10月23日 评论 a review of 卡车惊魂 - The second adaptation of Stephen King's short story Trucks . The first being the rather infamous Maximum Overdrive which was directed by the author himself. One would think an actual filmmaker could have done a better job of turning the tale of sentient motor vehicles into a movie, but alas that is not the case. Turns out Trucks might just be a really boring story that King inadvertently gave some "so bad, it's good" glory to when bringing it to the screen back in the '80s. His coked up state while on the set allowed for a lot of schlock value when viewed with the right, preferably inebriated mindset. Something this take completely misses out on by adopting a more serious approach outside of two particularly ridiculous (and gory) kills involving a child's remote-controlled dump truck and an inflated hazmat suit. And without them all you are left with is a cast of unlikable characters that are trapped in a situation that is nowhere near as exciting or fun to watch as it should be.

2020年10月4日 评论 a review of 灵偶契约2 - 2016's The Boy was a rather uneventful movie that just so happened to have a great plot twist that made it a bit more memorable than your average possessed doll flick. See, the big reveal was that the doll wasn't actually possessed at all, which led to a nice expectation subverting finale. This follow-up completely contradicts all of that however by turning the porcelain little creep into a full-blown demonic entity with a will of its own. It feels like some cardinal rule of sequels has been broken as this betrays the one noteworthy aspect of its predecessor. Oh, it also makes NO FREAKING SENSE. There is really only one way they could have made this turn for the legitimately supernatural work. That was by having the ghost of Brahms inhabit the body of his doll after he died in the first movie. Yes, that would have been ridiculous and silly, but also acceptable given what was established in the previous film. Especially compared to what they actually went with instead. Writer Stacey Menear tries to convince us that the doll was always alive, seemingly unaware of all the resulting plot holes despite having penned the script for the original as well. For example, when the doll was smashed four years ago (my, how time flies) it shattered away into the shards of glass and hollow interior that were all it ever really was. When the shell is cracked here though there's some kind of gross meat puppet monster lurking underneath. Why wasn't that the case last time? I doubt anyone involved could cook up a reasonable answer to that question or any of the others you'd have after watching this. Brahms: The Boy II has a lot more working against it than just its logic and continuity errors however. As a horror it's bland, predictable, and flat. Offering little more than a few jump scares that don't amount to anything and a remarkable lack of atmosphere. Visually it also looks generic and stale like some straight-to-DVD effort, only shot through a higher quality camera lens. Then there's the story which once again features a protagonist that has been through some trauma, but uses her and her son's past victimization as a MacGuffin to trap them in their situation rather than adding anything meaningful to the conversation on topics like PTSD. There's part of me that believes deep down that this was never meant to be a sequel. That Menear reunited with director William Brent Bell to make entirely different haunted doll movie, but because their last one made some money decided to make it a half-hearted and poorly thought-out continuation. Perhaps at the behest of the studio or something. When viewed as it's own thing it's entirely watchable if not particularly impressive whatsoever. However, it's impossible to recognize it as a standalone work because it's literally subtitled The Boy II . Which means the ties it shares by association will always be present in the minds of the audience. So the way this breaks the fiction while backpedaling on the one reason The Boy garnered any sort of following at all was never going to go unnoticed and doomed this low effort, incoherent cash grab from the start.

2019年12月31日 评论 a review of 爱探险的朵拉:消失的黄金城 - Such a confused and misguided movie. In effort to bring Dora into a more realistic world free from things like talking backpacks, this live-action update establishes that all of the events from the TV show were imagined by the protagonist and her cousin Diego when they played pretend together as children, and proceeds to make fun of its animated counterpart from that point on. An idea that almost works. At least until the film breaks its own reality by including an anthropomorphic fox in a mask. A fox we are clearly shown Dora and Diego imagining at the start of the movie. Yet neither of them even react in the slightest to seeing it stand before them in the flesh. Or that he's talking. Which is messy to say the least. The humor is very hit or miss. Things are at their most consistently humorous and entertaining when Dora goes to the city after years spent living in the jungle and has to navigate the intricacies of highschool. This is where I wish the movie had stayed as it was really on to something there. Unfortunately, it takes it takes a bizarre left turn and we end up back in the jungle on some sort of Indiana Jones -esque adventure where we are then ferried from one tonally incoherent setpiece to next and it seems like the movie loses all grip on what it wants to be before culminating in one of the most poorly choreographed musical numbers I've ever seen. It's definitely a cute film, but the vision behind it seems so muddled and even self-contradictory that all I feel is confusion and disdain. Little kids on the other hand are likely going to love this for all of its silly humor. I'd challenge those youngsters to revisit it in a few years though, as I doubt that even they will find much value in it when they're older.

2019年10月13日 评论 a review of 高草丛中 - Starts off like one of the more middling Stephen King adaptations of the '80s and '90s. Plagued by a cast of nobody actors delivering dialog that just wasn't able to make the jump from page to screen with any sort of grace, but still entertaining thanks to an intriguing premise that raises a lot of questions you want to know the answers to. Once the mystery is gone so is the magic unfortunately. The more the film reveals, the more it loses its way as plotholes begin to surface and it tries to hammer home its half-baked metaphor with tasteless shock value, which Joe Hill (King's son and the novella's co-author) has dabbled in before. Officially ending Netflix's winning streak with the prolific horror author.

2019年8月31日 评论 a review of 哥斯拉2:怪兽之王 - Yoooooo, people who hated Godzilla 2014 actually out here acting like this a better movie. LOLROFLMBO! B-b-b-but muh monster fights! Please, Godzilla still feels like a side-character in his own movie and every time one of these titan fights starts to get interesting the camera cuts away to check back up on whatever the wishy-washy turds at Monarch are doing. Michael Dougherty can't make glorious destruction like Gareth Edwards can and the brief glimpses you do get of the action you came to see are obscured and clouded by environmental effects to the point where you might as well not be looking at anything. All this stuff you all complained about in the 2014 film is still here yet you're excepting this time around because Godzilla has a few classic names to throwdown with? Nothing has actually improved. So sorry, but I'm gonna have to call you guys out on your crap with this one. If anything, this a huge step back from what we got before. The writing is just terrible. Only marginally less stupid than Pacific Rim: Uprising , which still holds the title of dumbest Kaiju movie, King of the Monsters doesn't even make use of it's one potentially good idea of people trying to use the titans to reverse humanity's effects on the environment. Instead it's just watching a bunch of idiots constantly flip-flop on whether or not they want to kill Godzilla and company, while Kyle Chandler struggles to decide on whispering or yelling all of his lines. Like seriously guy, just talk normal. That's perfectly acceptable. Between this and the "talent" hired to make the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong , it looks like the MonsterVerse is trying to take advantage of what appears to be the DCEU's recent comeback and snag the crown of worst cinematic universe right off its head. A shame, because before this it was in the running with The Conjuring Universe to be the MCU's second. Now it looks like we may need to behead this false king. His castle has begun to crumble.

There were the typical issues that almost always seem to plague faith-based films such as low production values, amateurish acting, and awkward writing/pacing, but the bond of brotherly love that kept the endearing protagonists going in the face of adversity was uplifting and warm. I was genuinely having a good time at the theater. Then the ending happened... The final act is capped off by a sad event that was just exploitative and unnecessary. What bothered me wasn't so much that it happened, but rather how it was handled. The scene is montaged in with the film's emotional crescendo eliminating any sort of big payoff. Then to make matters worse the writers immediately tried to gloss over the act as if it never even happened by moving right along to the happy ending, robbing the moment of any sort of meaning. The whole thing was nothing more than a tasteless and even offensive attempt to manipulate tears out of the audience. It added nothing to the movie and only served to diminish my enjoyment of it. I now better understand the whole Mass Effect 3 ending debacle. I was also disappointed with the game's conclusion, but at the same time I just couldn't understand how so many people found those last 10 minutes or so able to overwrite all the previous hours of enjoyment that were had before hand. I think I get it now. It's not even like Run the Race is the first movie to try and use that trick to pull an emotional reaction the audience. Far from it. It's actually a fairly common development in sports dramas. However, what has saved these other movies from the same rebuttal is that they at least allowed the moment to carry weight in the story by bolstering the overall theme of perseverance. Here it's just cheap shock value.
