2023年6月2日 评论 a review of 逃出白垩纪 - 65 ? Yeah, that's about right. I wanted to like this more. We simply don’t get enough dinosaur movies. At least not big releases with respectable budgets like this, that is. It’s usually Z-grade, Syfy original level crap. So naturally upon hearing about this my interest was piqued. Not enough to see it in theaters due to the sheer outlandishness of its premise raising some alarms, which proved to be the right choice, but to the degree that as soon as I heard Redbox had it I was very eager to make it my first rental of the year (man, 2023 been kind of dry…). Honestly? Wasn’t bad. A serviceable watch that just sort of narrowly manages to scrape by on the strengths of its The Last of Us / Logan -style surrogate father-daughter dynamic and the always entertaining to watch Adam Driver. Unlike those hits however, this isn’t able to get the viewer truly emotionally invested in its leads’ relationship as, while the headlining star can certainly act and has one heck of a backstory to motivate him, their interactions are really more awkward than endearing.  If anything, this might have benefited from leaning more into the zany potential its ridiculous concept of “space voyager gets stranded on prehistoric earth” possesses. There’s not enough dino action here to fully satisfy. Don’t get me wrong, watching the duo bond while trekking across the unique, untamed landscape and contending with the troubles doing so brings is decently entertaining, but some more T-Rex’s or velociraptors getting shot with laser guns would have gone a long way. It’s practically begging for it. It’s also worth noting that the entire setup is inherently flawed, which I believe is the whole reason this basically flopped at the box-office. Why they went with the far harder to sell synopsis of “member of some weird non-human, yet strangely human-looking civilization visits the planet long before mankind ever walked it” over the more natural “future man crashes on a planet with dinosaur-esque creatures” or something along those lines I have no idea. It comes off as needlessly complicated and forces the need for them to explain it. Which they do completely through opening text that leaks onto the title card in a manner that’s kind of corny. Plus, it would have made greater sense given the film’s alien dinosaur designs, what with their unusual spinal structures and such. Despite all of my complaints and criticisms up to this point in the review, I had a solid time with 65 . It’s ultimately a disposable, lazy evening flick that I’ll likely never watch again, but if you’re curious I’m sure you’ll find it to be a moderately enjoyable experience that doesn’t overstay its welcome the same as I did. The thing I appreciated the most about it though, is what it represents. Between stuff like this and Cocaine Bear , I’m beginning to see signs of Hollywood having original, amusing (if deeply absurd) ideas again in this age of otherwise constant superhero mumbo-jumbo and *insert popular long-running or resurrected franchise name here* installment no. 257. Essentially, giving me a glimmer of hope that cinema might start being fun again in the near future.

2021年11月13日 评论 a review of 大浪白鲨 - While I haven't had the chance to really dive too deep into the Shudder library yet, even with the titles I haven't liked their lineup of exclusives has proven noteworthy thus far, with long lost Romero works, a healthy amount of foreign horror, and a pair of deranged Nicolas Cage led nightmares among so much else. The streaming service's first shark flick though is about as generic as you can get, featuring the same level of prestige found in your average Syfy original. Something that can be seen in the poor quality of its CGI predators. It makes use of an oceanic survival scenario similar to the likes of The Shallows or 47 Meters Down and places an emphasis on its characters in an effort to ape the big hits. The setup never introduces any dangers beyond just watching a group be hunted while adrift on their raft at sea however, and although attractive the cast is stuck portraying individuals who are little more than bland, uninteresting stereotypes. All of which makes the time spent with them in-between the next sight of a knifing dorsal fin kind of a bore. The man-eating action itself is decent, but admittedly that's a pretty hard thing to mess up. There's a reason why we've seen an endless amount of movies based on these creatures come out since the release of Jaws after all. My favorite parts are the shots below the water's surface of people's legs kicking in dark as they swim due to their unexpected tension. They really missed the opportunity to scare the crap out of viewers by having a shadowy outline appear onscreen during those moments. The highlights for most people will take place in the final act where the survivors are forced to confront their aquatic foes face to razor-toothed face. Still, nothing here is going to blow you away. It's thrills are competent enough to make for a passable watch, with the biggest problem outside of the weak writing being how cheap and ugly the sharks look. Those flaws are ultimately what make this feel like a made-for-TV or straight-to-DVD production in spite of its efforts to be a little more respectable than the typical B-movie alternative. As a result, I can't truly recommend this as the film is a tepid time passer even at its best, but if you've exhausted all the better options out there it isn't the worst way to get your fix of blood and gills. Just don't expect anything terribly remarkable, particularly compared to the rest of the stuff that is available with your subscription.

2021年9月3日 评论 a review of 企业动物 - Hard to believe this came from the same guy who brought us The Overnight and Creep 1 and 2. It just feels so flat and pedestrian. Of course, unlike those three aforementioned films this is the first time Patrick Brice is working with someone else's script. So perhaps that's why this isn't up to his usual level of quality. It is fitfully amusing. There are actually some really good lines here and there. The problem is that it's often trying way too hard to actively be funny. Something that can be seen in things like the poorly conceived, hallucination induced animated sequence that's ugly to look at and comes off as a desperate, unnecessary attempt to inject some life into the proceedings. It also doesn't go as far with the premise as it could have. Trapping a bunch of corporate jerks underground and forcing them to survive could have led to a lot of messed up scenarios, but outside of a singular act of cannibalism things are shockingly tame throughout. They don't even squabble all that much. Mostly saving the bickering for their manipulative, self-absorbed boss rather than turning on each other. This is good for the occasional laugh. You get some particularly humorous performances from Calum Worthy and Karan Soni. The latter of whom finally gets something larger than a supporting role, which is great because he really is a special talent on the scene right now. Shame it didn't happen in a better film. Here's hoping Brice can get back on track with Creep 3 and his upcoming Netflix exclusive. His prior work has been good enough for me to give him another chance. I would just hate for this to mark the beginning of some kind of decline.

2021年6月23日 评论 a review of 深海异兽 - The term " Aliens clone" or "rip-off" gets thrown around so much it's kind of lost all meaning. Yet, I don't think it would be a hyperbole to say that Underwater bears more than a passing resemblance to the legendary sci-fi franchise. It's more Ridley Scott than James Cameron though, with the deep sea drill the characters inhabit calling to mind the Nostromo over Hadley's Hope. The set design is actually the movie's greatest strength. You can tell a lot of work and care went into the little details, be they scattered mementos or a personal touch that a diver added to their scuba gear, to make the environments feel lived-in and therefore believable. You can see the evidence of the life that once filled the facility before things went wrong which leads to a very haunting, solemn atmosphere and an ever-present feeling of loss that weighs on the survivors. It all ends up being somewhat squandered though as the film falls prey to the modern day cinema trapping of trying to make everything funny. I realize a little bit of humor can go a long way in a serious tale, but here we have a full-fledged comedian in T.J. Miller who is always ready with a sarcastic remark or amusing comment no matter what's going on, which constantly takes away from the gravity of the situation and severely limits the fear factor. Even as someone with thalassophobia, megalohydrothalassophobia, ichthyophobia, and countless other oceanic phobias there was never a moment that sent so much as a shiver up my spine, which is a letdown because on paper this should have been a pure nightmare for me. The biggest disappointment however is the handling, or mishandling rather, of the Lovecraftian elements. Stripped of any traces of cosmic horror, Cthulhu and The Deep Ones have been turned into generic feeling, albeit cool looking movie monsters, which has to be some kind of sin. I searched for any sign that something deeper was going on with these creatures to no avail. A shame because that really could have added something special to the story. All that aside, you can tell everyone involved really poured their hearts and souls into making this because they truly believed in the vision for the film, flawed though it may be. So while it's never as satisfying as it could have been, it is still a solid, charming creature feature with incredible visuals (the diving suits are dope) that I wouldn't mind watching again if someone were to put it on or I needed some background noise.

2021年5月26日 评论 a review of 游戏王剧场版:光之金字塔 - There's more to power than just attack points. *proceeds to win the duel by raising his attack points infinitely high* Essentially just an extended episode of the show. Meaning that it's impenetrable for newcomers as it assumes you're watching as an already indoctrinated fan and therefore doesn't bother to explain anything. Admittedly, I've never watched the original series (I was a GX guy), but even as someone who played the card game I was lost part of the time. Largely because it seems content to bend its own rules for the sake of creating some drama whenever it sees fit. Also, I think it's hilarious this only exists because the creators came up with three monsters so powerful they had to introduce a card that's sole purpose is to make it so your opponent can't play them in an effort to restore some balance to the game. As for how I would describe this to the uninitiated, I'd have to say it's like an edgier, darker, and more violent version of Pokémon aimed at teenagers. Protagonist Yugi Mutou's archrival Seto Kaiba, who's superiority complex puts even the likes of Vegeta and Sasuke from Naruto to shame, is manipulated by an outside force into trapping Yugi into a duel that will decide the fate of the world. The real behind-the-scenes villain is actually kind of lame. Finally revealing himself right at the end and getting dispatched pretty easily before the credits roll. The action itself revolves primarily around watching the characters play a card game, albeit a very flashy one as every card they use comes to life. Still, despite how much I loved this as a kid, it's not the most exciting thing to sit through now that I'm older. Partly because the monsters have more personality than the actual people and also due to everyone onscreen feeling the need to say out loud everything that just happened despite the fact that we the audience saw it ourselves WITH. OUR. EYES. Joey: Yugi, I know you'll take this creep down! Téa: That's right! Because we'll be with you all the way! Joey, Téa, and Tristan: Always! Also all three: *immediately run away and leave Yugi behind to deal with the problem* Despite all of this though I still had a fun time revisiting it. It's super nostalgic and made me want to call up my old childhood friends, dust off my deck, and d-d-d-d-d-d-d-duel like we did when we were kids. Plus, Kaiba's theme song? *Chef's kiss* Pure 2000's goodness right there. There are even some solid jokes as well! If you're a Yu-Gi-Oh! fan or ever were at one point or another, it's safe to say you'll enjoy this as a reminder of what a blast this multimedia franchise could be, even if the quality does noticeably drop as you get older. If you aren't familiar with the property then this is a pretty poor starting point and quite frankly it's a little odd that you're here to begin with.

2018年12月23日 评论 a review of 艾伦·德杰尼勒斯:感同身受 - Ellen is just as adorable as ever and this is overall a solid return to standup for her even if this isn't among her best material. The jokes are of a really cutesy variety that will bring a smile to your face. The mega-popular talk show host isn't afraid to get real here. She opens up about some personal tragedies and the struggle she faced after coming out. This gives the special an uplifting and poignant nature stemming from Ellen's message of staying true to yourself, being kind, and never losing hope in your darkest hour. I just wish Relatable had been a bit better at holding my attention. I was on my phone throughout almost the entire thing. Aside from the few times where I completely drifted out my ears were always focused on the TV, but I wasn't exactly rapt if you know what I mean. There are also moments where you can tell that she must have had some trouble coming up with enough material for a whole set. Like the "gag" that consists solely of her showing the kind of stuff she and her wife sent to each other on Instagram. It does eventually lead into her own joke, but still feels like a very obvious and rather desperate time filler. Warts aside, Ellen's return to standup is a welcome one due to her always affable nature and moments of clever observational comedy. She may not actually be all that relatable anymore, but her story is no less compelling. Making the glimpses into the darker side of her rise to success the unexpected highlight of the special.

2018年10月18日 评论 a review of The Hills Have Eyes - A woefully unprepared suburban family makes a quick detour in Nevada to visit their family's silver mine on their way to California. Unfortunate circumstances cause them to become stranded in the desert where they are then set upon by a group of deranged cannibals. There's a lot of buildup to the big assault which includes crucifixion, rape, and kidnapping. Until that happens it's mostly just watching the characters roam around in the dark. Something that is meant to build tension as you know the cannibals are watching from the top of the nearby hills, but I never found it to be really effective. For me the movie didn't take off until the sun came back up and the remaining members off the Carters started fighting back with some good old-fashioned ingenuity, rage, and a pet dog truly deserving of the name "Beast." Even the rape victim doesn't waste any time curling up into a ball. A nice touch as usually these are the kinds of characters that have been written to shutdown and become burdens on the other survivors. Having Susan Lanier's "Brenda" keep going and giving her the mental fortitude to come up with the movie's best trap after what happened to her is a nice feministic touch. One of the greatest strengths in this Wes Craven project is the setting. The arid desert scenery and backwater psychopaths make this feel like Mad Max meets The Texas Chain Saw Massacre . It's got a great tone that's only slightly marred by the film's greatest weakness; goofy villains. Something I've noticed in a lot of older horror flicks with insane antagonists is that these unhinged individuals will do some really silly stuff like absurd changes in the manner of which they speak. Like going from low growls to baby talk. This might have been frightening back in the day, but it hasn't aged well. Coming off as more corny than frighteningly deranged. Whether or not this was intentional on Craven's part in an attempt to imbue the film with some dark comedy I can't say for sure. I just know that it pulled me out of the experience a bit. While not one of the best in his catalog, The Hill Have Eyes is still a solid example of why Wes Craven is so iconic. An original idea that helped cement him as one of the greats of the genre. A good time for anyone who loves seeing victims strike back at their attackers and refusing to go down without a fight. You just have to make it through the slow first half, some annoying comedic moments with the cannibals, and be willing to accept an oddly abrupt ending.
