2025年12月17日 评论 a review of 男人 - Heavy-handed with its theme, metaphor, dialogue, and really everything else in a way that’s super unflattering for its writer/director and totally not indicative of the quality of the rest of his work. Maybe the most heavy-handed movie I’ve ever seen (not hyperbolizing). Which I’m sure is something that many will defend by saying things like “you need to be blunt with this message! The time for subtlety has passed if we want change!” Just as many who will be totally enraged because it’s “woke trash that says all men are evil 😤” or irritated that “oh great, another MAN  is trying to tell us he understands the tragedy of the female experience 🙄” Blah blah blah. This feels like it was tailor-made to throw every side of the modern feminism/patriarchy debate into an absolute freaking TIZZY . As for the actual filmmaking craft, the entire first half seems as if Garland watched every other piece of A24 arthouse horror and copied the same style of pointless cinematic shots of scenery in an effort to convince us of  Men ’s depth and poignance. It totally doesn’t work and makes the whole thing come off as ungodly pretentious and, much worse, boring instead. I can definitely see why this had everyone saying “A24 has become a self-parody of itself now” for a while there.  Then there’s that disgusting  final sequence before the ending that had me asking “what?” right up until it’s somewhat flat big reveal… When the flick finally gets going though, I’ve got to say it is TERRIFYING. I can’t remember when the last time I was genuinely scared like this was. That’s what I come to a horror flick for soooooo…. Plus, that means the flick is legitimately really good at getting its point across if you think about it. Hands-down Garland’s worst film to date. In a weird way I gotta give him props for being bold (or hubristic) enough to actually put something like this out though. Incredibly frustrating, but between it and Annihilation  I really want to see him return to the horror genre again in the future. He’s an expert at creating messed up sights that stick in my brain.

2021年7月11日 评论 a review of 食人鱼3DD - Somehow even hornier than its predecessor. DD takes an almost no holds barred approach when it comes to trying to one-up 3D in vulgarity and nudity. On top of there being fake breasts as far as the eye can see, these are also some of the most crass and crude gags I've ever witnessed. While some things like a farting cow corpse complete with a working butthole were a bit too juvenile for even my tastes, for the most part I was perfectly content to go along for the ride. That's because I don't demand too much from my B-movies, particularly not Piranha . Even back in 1978 all these films were really good for was a little bit of boobage, a lot of blood, and plenty of wacky hijinks along the way. So the lengths this is willing to go to in order to top the rest of the series in at least two of those categories was perfectly fine by me. That's what I came for after all. The only area where it takes a bit of a step back is in the carnage department. There's still plenty of gore and mayhem, but director John Gulager's kills are nowhere near as creative as Alexandre Aja's. Plus, trading the open lake setting of the previous entry for that of a water park makes the feeding frenzy feel much smaller in comparison. The entrail strewing goods are still delivered in a competent enough manner to make for a solid creature feature regardless, it's just clear they didn't really go for broke here like they did everywhere else. While I have yet to see Piranha II: The Spawning , I can't imagine it's any raunchier or more ridiculous than this. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the franchise's most immature elements have been placed front and center and get taken to wild new heights. There's stuff here so nasty and irreverent you'd think you were watching another Seth Rogen/Evan Goldberg collaboration. It's definitely dumb and gratuitous, but as someone who is really only in attendance for the sleazier aspects anyways I had fun seeing things get taken to the next self-aware level. Honestly, in a way it's kind of glorious in its tastelessness and stupidity.

2018年12月8日 评论 a review of 森林之子毛克利 - What sets this telling of The Jungle Book apart from the others is that it doesn't shy away from the violence. Added blood aside though, I was surprised to find that this isn't necessarily an any less kid-friendly version of the story. In fact, until Mowgli gets swept away by the monkeys the movie doesn't really do anything all that different from the highly sanitized Disney takes. The new takes on the classic characters are interesting. Baloo has a bit of edge, Kaa is something of a jungle prophet, and Shere Khan is actively slaughtering members of the man tribe. All of this hits you right at the beginning preparing you for a darker, more mature take on the source material. To its credit it mostly is. It's just that this newfound grit is constantly being undermined by the silly sense of humor. These may be more grim incarnations of the characters, but they are no less interested in having fun and swapping jokes. This naturally leads to a bit of tonal inconsistency with the content constantly flip-flopping between that of a family movie and something harsher. Mowgli's journey is quite compelling as he finds himself torn between two worlds neither of which he'll ever truly belong to. Even amongst all the more seasoned actors and excellent motion capture performances all helmed by the king of mo-cap Andy Serkis himself, it's Rohan Chand ( Bad Words ) who stands at the top of the pack. He's very young and doesn't have any sort of physically imposing presence, but he shows skill beyond his years in portraying Mowgli's inner and outer struggle. The action sequences are thrilling. The scene where Baloo and Bagheera try to rescue Mowgli from the monkeys is the highlight of the movie. The plot itself however is uneven in delivering the same kind of epicness. Character motivations are spot-on, but the film ends right as it starts to get really interesting and the final battle is awkwardly handled in terms of bringing everyone together. Scene transitions are also weird at times with their abruptness in finding characters in different situations. Serkis' passion for the project can certainly be felt. The CGI animals look fantastic and the title character has a satisfying arc to follow. It's successful at providing a new take on the classic story even if it doesn't have the best execution. I wish that it would have chosen to stick more with it's depiction of the unforgiving side of the jungle rather than softening the blow with Disney/Marvel style humor and that it did a better job of getting the animals to rally around Mowgli in the final showdown, but the inclusion of darker and more violent content does make for an unforgettable and often exciting version of The Jungle Book story even in the face of its flaws.

2018年10月27日 评论 a review of 鬼镇灵异杀人事件 - An '80s inspired horror-comedy with a synth soundtrack that's set in a small town where normal people live alongside classic movie monsters, ghosts, and witches. Very amusing, but the plot is half-baked. A bunch of disparate threads that never quite come together. There are a few plot holes and it's never clear why Chance the Rapper's character is even in this. Everybody in the movie asks why he's around, but Austin Vesely doesn't have an answer for them or us. The shortcomings in the narrative are a lot like biting into a delicious looking piece of pizza only to find out the crust is kind of stale. But as the old saying (sort of) goes, pizza is a lot like sex. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad, well it's still pretty darn good. I had a lot of fun and would love to see another movie set in this universe as the world is worth further exploration. I laughed quite a bit, but I won't deny that the poor writing keeps this still tasty medium one-topping from being anything more than just a bunch of empty calories.

2018年10月9日 评论 a review of 鬼哭神嚎 - Does a lot considering the era and budget, but the first hour is a drag of hokey haunted house tropes. Doors that close by themselves, black cats, and windows that slam shut on fingers. This movie has them all. It's not like they're something the genre has moved away from over the years, but in most of the other options out there these things are the build up to something bigger. The stuff that lets you know that evil is on the way and some real scares too. For the majority of the movie I never got that feeling. Somewhat wasting an uncomfortable atmosphere and one of the creepier houses in cinema (don't the windows look like eyes?). At least until the last 45 minutes... What kept me watching until that point was the subplot about the priest who keeps trying to save the Lutz family at great personal cost. This sort of selfless bravery reminded me of The Warrens from The Conjuring series and a depiction of the kind of warmth so few get to experience with religion. Of course it also depicts the less open side of the church as well when the larger diocese refuses to even investigate the case. Instead brushing it off as a bunch of hooey. So much for the outreach program I guess... With paranormal afflictions keeping anyone of the cloth from being able to intervene, it's up to the family's friends to try and get to the bottom of George Lutz's increasingly antisocial behavior. That's when the movie starts to get really good. Demons lurk outside windows, blood leaks from the walls, and a satanic burial ground is found in the basement. The evil that seemed like a non-presence for about the first half of the film rears it's malevolent head and the chaos begins. As a sucker for possessed house films (demons are way scarier than ghosts!) this is when I started to enjoy myself. As a classic of the genre it should be watched by anyone who calls themselves an enthusiast. You can see how it influenced the countless other movies that followed. The first half+ hasn't aged well, but the final act does a lot to make up for that. Plus the no man, woman, child, or animal left behind ending shows the world what a REAL man looks like. For once I wasn't ticked to see someone run back into danger. Instead I cheered them on.

2018年4月8日 评论 a review of 星球大战外传:侠盗一号 - Rogue One succeeds at showing a darker and more desperate side of the Star Wars universe. The galaxy is being crushed under the Empire's oppression, the Rebel Alliance is being forced to resort to grim tactics in order to survive, and to top it all off the Empire is in the process of putting the finishing touches on some sort of super weapon. One rumored to have the power to destroy planets. All of this sets off a chain of events that make for the most unique Star Wars yet. One that feels more like a heist and war film than what's come before. One of the movie's greatest strengths is that it captures the bleak atmosphere one would expect from a Star Wars story set in this period of the series' timeline. There's a feeling of hopelessness that follows the characters around through every scenario they find themselves apart of. Nearly every planet they visit has that dirty, rundown, right in the middle of a warzone feel that sells the tone excellently. When it comes to the depiction of the state of the galaxy the movie succeeds near-perfectly. Another area where the movie is at it's best is in it's incredible battles. These conflicts standout as the best the series has to offer. The scale is grand, the stakes are intense, and the shear amount of eye candy is stunning. The series even gets involved in some non-blaster fights that rival the series best lightsaber duels despite not having a single Jedi in sight. When it comes to action the movie does not disappoint. Unfortunately the same thing cannot be said for it's writing and characters. Something that leaves an unfortunate sour patch in an otherwise stellar movie. It's not that the events aren't interesting. The concept of watching a ragtag team come together to steal the plans for the freaking Death Star with all odds stacked against them is one that would excite any Star Wars fan. The problem is that early on it just sort of moves in a way that unceremoniously throws them together. It jumps around so much at the beginning it's actually a little confusing to piece together what's going on. It doesn't take long for things to click, but when they do your left with an even bigger problem; you have no way to connect with the characters, so it's impossible to care about them. The exception being Alan Tudyk's excellent K-2SO. It's not that they're unlikable characters. It's just that there's no spark or flair to them that causes them to standout as anything more than the Star Wars universe's B-team. A group of bland faces meant to carry things on here while things are being prepared for Episode VIII. Given that the popularity of the Star Wars series partly stems from the compelling nature of it's characters and plot, it's disappointing to see the series first anthology film fall short in those areas. This is primarily a movie you watch for the spectacular action. I say primarily because the movie does have a great deal of fan-service for Star Wars fans. Things like special references and even a few surprise cameos are sure to please. Especially since they feel natural to the story and not just shoehorned in. So in the end Rogue One isn't a disaster. Just more of a disappointment in some areas. There are still plenty of reasons to check it out, longtime fan or not. It's noticeable differences in things like tone have the potential to appeal to newcomers. So in the end all is not lost.
