2022年10月9日 评论 a review of 晚安妈咪 - Another one of those American remakes of a standout foreign horror film that does things like stripping the original of its more brutal moments and getting dumped out onto a streaming service to make it more palatable to a wider, English-speaking audience. Yet, while the tale has lost some of its bite due to the more sanitized violence and cheaper Western scare tactics, it’s not all of the sudden any less interesting. If anything, it might arguably be a slight improvement narrative-wise due to removing a few of the hints from its predecessor that, while still managing to fool my dumb self, led to a lot of others correctly guessing the big twist before it arrived and allowing the possible imposter mother to seem less like an idiot by providing context for her actions that give the viewer more of a reason to doubt both parties. These minor writing refinements are a bit of a double-edged sword however, as by making the pseudo-antagonist’s decisions logical to the audience they inadvertently removed the story’s cautionary message. In hindsight, the frustration viewers felt when they realized just how easy it would have been to avoid that entire scenario was cleverly used to hammer home the theme at the core of the movie. Realizing that through watching this has retroactively given me a greater respect for its forerunner. Even without the moral however, the mystery is strong enough to carry the experience. So it ends up being aspects such as the lower production values and overall tamer content that are the real faults. The somewhat cheap visuals, out of place soundtrack, and the fact that outside of a particularly hard to watch sequence of child abuse nothing all that shocking happens cause this to have a straight-to-DVD vibe that brought to mind stuff like Mercy  with Chandler Riggs (why that specifically I have no idea). This extends to the acting to a degree as well. Obviously seasoned actress Naomi Watts is fine, but those around her are, not bad, only far less convincing.  When it comes down to what the best version is, the answer is undeniably the first one from Austria. It packs a gut punch and takeaway you simply won’t find here. That being said, it’s not an absolute tragedy that this is going to be the way a lot of people will watch Goodnight Mommy . There’s no reason for anyone already familiar with the prior iteration to check this out as it doesn’t do anything terribly new, but for those who either can’t be bothered to read subtitles or have some serious issue with the sight of blood the novelty and intrigue of its premise made the jump so this serves as a fine, albeit weaker alternative.

2021年8月30日 评论 a review of 地狱游乐园 - Remember in the '80s when slasher flicks were a dime a dozen? How they all had little themes like summer camp or some random holiday? Well meet Hell Fest . A throwback to the stab-happy movies of that era that managed to find a setting largely untouched in the genre: haunted funhouses. Taking place in a seasonal Halloween amusement park a masked killer takes advantage of the fact that every employee is in costume and actively trying to scare guests to stalk and murder a group of college students undetected. A group who, while a bit annoying at first due to how unnecessarily vulgar they are, quickly begin to grow on you due to their love of all things horror. This definitely has some decent thrills. There are a couple of really good kills, one of which is very Fulci-esque, and a few genuinely tense moments near the end. The real star of the show though is the environment. The creative mazes and attractions the characters' visit make the traveling carnival look like something you'd actually want to visit were it not for the demented murderer lurking about. Plus, it's hard to not get excited by a cameo from the Candyman himself, Tony Todd. It drops the ball in a pretty big way with its villain however. Outside of a neat reveal in the final scene there's nothing interesting about him. His most defining attributes are that he slowly plods forward in a clear nod to the likes of Jason Voorhees and Michael Meyers, a tear in his right shoe, and that he hums Pop Goes the Weasel . None of which make him very memorable or scary. It's this kind of thing the hold this back from ever attaining true classic status or turning into its own franchise with sequels. Still, even relying on visuals and location alone like it is, Hell Fest is ripe for a cult following. It got off on a bit of a wrong foot with me at first as its cast of young actors and actresses seemed prime to grate on the nerves. Yet, their enthusiasm proved infectious and it wasn't long before I was having just as much fun as they seemed to be having onscreen. The entire setup makes it a perfect October watch and it even capitalizes on the premise in some clever, effective ways. All of which is enough for me to give it a pass and a recommendation.

2020年12月3日 评论 a review of 乐高星球大战:圣诞特别篇 - If they were intent on revisiting the "Life Day" concept these 42 years later, doing so under the LEGO brand was undoubtedly the right move. It allows them to fully revel in just how absurd the idea of a Star Wars themed holiday special is without having any effect on the actual continuity. For the most part it's a bunch of meaningless fluff. Cute, but unlikely to stand alongside the likes of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as your next yearly seasonal rewatch. It's worth checking out once though. Children are definitely the target audience for this special as most of the humor doesn't evolve much beyond "haha, look at this character doing a silly dance." Still, older viewers can find amusement in things like the more clever references to the series' history or how it absolutely ridicules the sequel trilogy. I'm actually surprised Disney allowed this to be made given how much it skewers their biggest contribution to the franchise. Seriously, writer David Shayne seems to harbor the same amount of disdain for J.J. Abrams' vision of Star Wars as Rian Johnson. The Rise of Skywalker receives most of the abuse here as the special goes out of its way to ignore the events of that movie despite being set after it. If you remove the silliness and non-canon nature of the project it would actually make for a better episode 9 than the one we got. The subplot of Rey training Finn to be a jedi feels like something we actually should have seen happen at some point in that trilogy and it introduces Emperor Palpatine to the mix in a far more satisfying manner than Abrams did. None of this will exactly leave you clamoring for more, but if you're a hardcore member of the fan base or a more casual appreciator with kids who share your enthusiasm you can pop this on one Christmas season and not feel like you wasted your time. It offers some genuinely funny moments while showing a willingness for the franchise to acknowledge its missteps and poke some healthy fun at them. So in a way, Life Day has kind of been redeemed here.
