2026年1月28日 评论 a review of X战警:天启 - Apocalypse gives us the first X-Men movie to feature a classic lineup of the characters coming together in their teenage years to fight evil under the guidance on Prof. Xavier while not being overshadowed by Wolverine. Essentially it's a close as we've gotten to the X-Men film we've all wanted for years now. However given how many steps forward the superhero genre has taken over the years, and Brian Singer's reliance on standard tropes, Apocalypse ends up being an odd mixture of better late than never, and too little, too late. There's a lot to like about Apocalypse . We get the return of the great cast from First Class and DoFP like Fassbender and McAvoy, Sophie Turner's Jean Grey, Evan Peters continually enjoyable Quicksilver complete with more of those amazing super-speed action sequences, and it doesn't crap all over Cyclops. It's got some of the best portrayals of these X-Men characters we've seen onscreen so far. The interpretations still aren't perfect mind you. DoFP couldn't fix everything, so things like age and timeline discrepancies keep things from being just as every comic book fan wants to see it. Nothing short of a reboot of the series will fix that. However, this is still the best we've gotten so far in that department. Given that Apocalypse seemingly does so much right by making good on the promise DoFP set the series up for, what keeps it from achieving greatness? That answer is simply that it's too familiar. With the MCU dominating theatres, the DCEU up and running, and the X-Men's own lengthy presence on the silver screen we've seen a lot of villains want to destroy the world. And quite frankly, they were more interesting than Apocalypse. The movie just has a very bland villain. Plus we already know how the fight turns out, so Apocalypse just ends up coming off as some dude who isn't really a threat whose sole purpose is just to break stuff. Then there's how underdeveloped he is. The action itself falls short as well. This is a bunch of special effects driven destruction. The likes of which we've seen in a lot of superhero films lately. Not even the constant display and barrage of these character's powers carries the same level of excitement as before. The action still isn't boring to watch, but it's certainly going through the established motions. Then there's the fact that a lot of these special effects look cheap and dated, particularly in the first half of the movie. What hurts Apocalypse the most is simply superhero fatigue. Brain Singer and FOX do their best to give us the X-Men movie we should've received in the first place all those years ago. For the most part they succeed. The issue it's a little late to do that. The superhero genre has taken off and reached heights one could hardly believe. Going back to basics wounds them here. They got off to their post- DoFP timeline with a shaky start. Does any of this mean Apocalypse is an outright bad movie? No, it's just behind the times. A flaw that's easier to forgive when you consider this is a close as we've come to that perfect X-Men lineup. There's a sort of classic X-Men feel to it and it's just nice to see a lot of the original characters like Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Storm get some real screen-time and actually take part in the action without Hugh Jackman's Wolverine hogging the spotlight. So yeah, it's the most admirable attempt at giving us the perfect X-Men movie that's sadly flawed in key areas. For some this simply isn't going to be enough. For others like myself this will still be a respectable and enjoyable movie. One that still manages to entertain for (finally!) exploring other, original X-Men. The series things to make up for, but it certainly looks like they're trying. The future still has the potential to be bright for these characters.

2021年2月24日 评论 a review of 威利的游乐园 - Like The Banana Splits Movie before it, this is another case of someone beating the long in development Five Nights at Freddy's adaptation to the punch. Making me wonder if Blumhouse shouldn't just shelve the project for good as the bar has been set about as high as one could reasonably expect a film about killer animatronics to be here. Seriously, this would be a tough act to follow. You're getting exactly what you would expect from the premise. It's like someone played a FNaF game, asked themselves why the player can't just smash the deranged pizza parlor mascots to bits, and proceeded to make a movie where that actually happens starring Nicolas Cage. It's mechatronic puppets may not have the same amount of personality as their obvious inspirations and there are perhaps too many montages of Cage just cleaning stuff, but it's so much fun watching its star be his typical weird self despite never saying a word since the whole thing makes no bones about being a Chuck E. Cheese-y B-movie and puts the robo-bashing front and center. Plus, I was actually impressed with what they came up with for the story even if it was delivered in two big exposition dumps. Honestly, I could see this having some franchise potential. I would be completely onboard with Cage reprising this role, drifting into another town, and beating the living crap out of whatever ridiculous monstrosities are holding it hostage. Especially if we got to learn more about the silent protagonist along the way. All they would have to do is lower the cost of entry. Considering Willy's knows exactly what it's trying to be and how to satisfy its target audience, the only real problem it has is its pricetag. $20 to stream this (or anything for that matter) is just ridiculous, and I like the darn thing! So unless you can find it for free online like I did, hold out for a cheaper DVD release or something. It's good, but not worth shelling out that kind of cash for in the middle of a freaking pandemic.

2020年10月8日 评论 a review of 休比的万圣节 - This almost feels like a love letter to the Sandler films of old. There are a ton of references made to some of his most notable works and we see him step back into a role similar to the ones he played in movies like The Waterboy and Little Nicky by adopting the persona of a loser with a speech impediment. It's good fun, but while the former SNL star's Netflix outings have gradually been improving in quality Hubie Halloween doesn't quite live up to its inspirations. Some jokes just fall flat on their face and the biggest laughs often come from the supporting cast, which means the Sandman himself regularly has his thunder stolen by his co-stars despite being the one who's onscreen the most. Part of this is due to just how bizarre his character actually is. Happy Madison comedies are always filled with weirdos and oddballs, but Hubie is too cartoonish for his own good with his kitted-out thermos and penchant for freaking out at the slightest fright. There is a likable quality to him however as he really is a good, goofy dude that doesn't deserve all the cruelty he is subjected to. This leads to a nice anti-bullying message that's good for children. In fact, outside of a character played by Maya Rudolph who makes it very clear she's sexually unsatisfied in her relationship and one or two more suggestive jokes this is actually a decent choice for an October family movie night. Overall, this is a solid little holiday caper. Happy Madison's comedy is still proving to be a bit hit or miss these days, but this is easily their most consistently amusing release in some time. It's throwback nature does allow it recapture the magic of Sandler classics like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore at times as well. However, this is still probably only going to strike a chord with the comedian's most ardent fans.

2020年2月23日 评论 a review of 刺猬索尼克 - I went into this with low expectations. After watching that first trailer I thought the beloved Sega mascot was going to have a lot more working against him in this film than just a disturbing new look. Yet, I went to see it anyways out of appreciation for the studio's decision to admit their mistake and redesign the character. Something I believe they deserve to be rewarded at the box-office for. I ended up walking away pleasantly surprised. Sonic gets a superhero origin story. One with a surprisingly complex and rather bizarre supporting lore. A pretty good job was done crafting a narrative fit for theatre screens out of a game series that's not exactly known for having riveting writing. The titular hedgehog establishes his place in the world, meets his archnemesis, and even sets up a few sequels without any major hitches. The only things I can see that might anger purists are Sonic now being called an alien and his new electric powers. I highly doubt the outcry will be that large though. You can tell this cute, funny adventure is aimed primarily at kids. Although I have heard it said there are some raunchy jokes. They either went completely over my head or weren't as egregious to me as they were to others. So personally I still say this is very family-friendly. It is something parents might want to consider though. Yet, none of this is to say that the movie isn't still very juvenile. In fact its childish nature is probably the biggest knock one could have against it. Portions of the humor fail to connect with anyone outside of the youngest members of the audience. I mean there's a fart gag for crying out loud. The thing that makes me more excited for a sequel to this as opposed to, say, Detective Pikachu (despite that being the better movie) are the human characters. The thought of having to put up with Justice Smith and Kathryn Newton again in order to see more of Reynolds-chu being adorable and quippy makes me ill. I could deal with Marsden and Sumpter's return however, as they were genuinely likable and never irritating. Really the only thing that has me worried about a potential follow-up is Carrey. Never really been a fan of his particular brand of comedy. He was remarkably restrained here though so I found him tolerable. However, if he's let off the leash in a sequel I could see that really turning me off. Overall, this turned out much better than history would have dictated. As much as that redesign undoubtedly helped make much of the film easier to swallow than it otherwise would have been, it really owes its success to adopting the modern superhero movie formula. Which proves to still be a winning format even in this extremely child-oriented state. It is particularly indebted to the X-Men series, which you can see during Sonic's high-speed antics where the world remains frozen around him just like Quicksilver. Sonic the Hedgehog might not blow any minds, but it is another sign that the infamous videogame movie curse is ending, if not already over.

2018年10月27日 评论 a review of 湮灭 - Alex Garland manages to create something that's deep, but not cryptic. Everything it deals with thematically is laid out in front of you through the conversations the characters have. There are still moments that require thought on the viewer's part, such as the symbolism heavy final showdown, but it's nice to see a sci-fi movie that strives to be intelligent without being vague. At least in regards as to what it all is supposed to mean. The science side of it is where you're forced to draw your own conclusions. The film gives only the most basic of explanations as to what is causing all of the weird mutations found in the ever-growing "Shimmer" the cast explores. It's up to us to piece together why it's affecting things in the way that it is. I'm no cellular-biologist, but I think the reason Garland didn't go deeper on this front is because he knew there was no reasoning he could give for the things happening onscreen that would have any basis in reality. It's a pretty out there concept, but given how significant all the DNA talk in the movie seems to be it's a little odd that the whole premise would exist solely on McGuffin thought up to be little more than a take it at face value excuse for all the gorgeous weirdness onscreen. While this leaves me with some mixed feelings, it does exemplify one of the movie's best traits; for something striving to be so thought-provoking, it's remarkably unpretentious. If anything it enjoys indulging in the gory, B-movie thrills that come from being a body horror that's part creature feature. One of the best in quite some time in terms of grotesqueness and tension. It has what might be the best jump scare I've ever seen and the entire lighthouse segment is nothing short of horrifying. The visuals are mostly gorgeous. Light and bright colors are used to show off the natural and unnatural beauty of the strange new environment while simultaneously reminding us about the danger hidden inside it by capitalizing on the scenery's alien qualities. The weaker moments of CGI and a few noticeable green screens can make this feel somewhat low-budget at times. Nothing that really gets in the way of the movie, but something that stands out nonetheless. The soundtrack on the other hand is outstanding across the board. Aside from dealing with the typical subject matter associated with the body horror, Annihilation is about depression, regret, self-destruction, and how much mental stress a person can endure before their minds break. It's all told in a very human way thanks to it's damaged protagonists, but the overall film isn't as engaging as it could have been. Mostly due to the pacing and manner in which the story is told. Especially in comparison to Garland's directorial debut, Ex Machina . I was never bored, but there are some unexciting stretches in the 2 hour running time. While I don't think it was too complex for the average moviegoer, I can see why Paramount chose to avoid a full international wide-release. The fact that it's still brainier than your average movie made it too challenging for success in the superhero age of cinema. While having it's flaws, it offers enough traditional stimulation to keep one's attention. Another valiant effort by Garland to do something different in a time where that sort of courage is becoming less and less profitable.

2018年7月29日 评论 a review of 狂暴巨兽 - Nice to see Brad Peyton didn't forget to add some humor to the mix this time. His last Dwayne Johnson vehicle San Andreas had the same amount of glorious destruction, but ended up being no fun thanks to a humdrum tone. Rampage doesn't repeat that mistake. It's giant monster action is backed up by the humorous one-liners being fired off from it's charismatic leading man. This basically puts it at roughly the same level of quality as your average big blockbuster action-adventure film, but I won't be too critical on it for that as I still think that American cinema could use more Kaiju-like movies. At least until that Pacific Rim cinematic universe gets started and most likely ruins everything for everybody. Now these video game beasts don't hold a candle to the likes of Godzilla and Kong, who have just kicked off what is currently the only good non-MCU cinematic universe (sorry Batman and Tom Cruise), but they're solid enough to hold us over until those two OGs get their sequels. The albino gorilla "George" actually has some personality and the giant crocodile is straight up FIERCE. It's design is grotesque and incredible. The wolf is more than a little out there. Why is it the only one with weird, non-species appropriate abilities? Did I miss the part where it was injected with porcupine and flying squirrel DNA? I realize that it most likely comes from the game(s) that I haven't played, but it's still odd and probably should have been justified to the audience in some way rather than just being pulled right from the source material with no context given to those unfamiliar with it. The cast supporting Johnson is pretty solid. Jeffrey Dean Morgan is the obvious standout brandishing his typical swagger. The only one I really had a problem with was Jake Lacy. He was overacting the entire time and I think he was actually meant to be a funny character, but every comedic bit with him just feel flat on it's face. At least until something fell flat on his face. Now obviously this is kind of a dumb movie. You come to watch stuff get destroyed, not for deep writing. That being said the villains have an unbelievably moronic plot to cover their tracks that is just laughable in all the wrong ways. A totally idiotic excuse to get all the monsters in one place to throw down. It works though. They got there and smashed some stuff. So while I can't consider it a win for the script, I might not call it a total loss either. Rampage doesn't exactly save video game adaptations, but it is another example of how they're getting better. It's got more wide-reaching appeal than any other to date and is a solid, if dumb popcorn flick. There were some laughs, stuff went boom, and really big animals punched each other. All stuff that lead to me walking away both satisfied and entertained. Really all one could ask for from a movie like this.
