2022年5月10日 评论 a review of 神秘海域 - If there was ever a video game series that seemed perfectly suited to be turned into a movie, it was Uncharted . The whole point of those games was to capture the same quality of action, set pieces, humor, and storytelling found in only the very best of Hollywood blockbusters and present them in a playable format. Something they succeeded at marvelously. Evidently, the developers at Naughty Dog set the bar too high however, as this somewhat inevitable feeling film adaptation ironically fails to match the level of spectacle found in the source material or deliver the heartwarming character relationships that made its stories so beloved. While it's disappointing to see the brand not live up to the standards its fans expect when transferring into the very medium of entertainment it had been designed to ape for so long, it's more of an amusing paradox rather than an experience-ruining fault as the right assortment of elements are in place to still make for a pretty great, yet not as clever Indiana Jones knockoff. Honestly, its biggest issues are ones we've seen from Sony Pictures and the director before, most notably in their prior collaboration on Venom . Namely, SPE not being able to deliver the same graphical fidelity of the company's excellent PlayStation gaming consoles or even their animation studio, and Ruben Fleischer's inability to create truly thrilling action sequences. Ultimately, the film manages to coast by primarily on the charisma of its stars and the strength of their comedic interactions though. I actually loved the new, younger interpretations of these heroes as it lays some nice groundwork for the sequels to build upon. The only aspect about it that kind of bugged me is that there's no element of camaraderie between its leads, with them even constantly double-crossing and screwing each other over all throughout the running time, which looking back was such an enjoyable aspect of the narratives in the games. It makes sense however given that this is their first time meeting and working together, while also setting the foundation for their familial bonds to grow moving forward. So I can't really complain about it too much. Honestly, despite pointing out the areas where improvements need to be made (visuals, scale of exciting moments), I'm left with very little to complain about at all. Not just for the potential of what the franchise could achieve in theaters in the future, but for what it's offering right now at this very second. I laughed and had a blast with the globetrotting antics, while Tom Holland proved to be just as endearing outside of the Spider-Man tights as in them. They didn't bother including a pointless romance subplot with Chloe (it's Elena or no one, bub) either, managing to completely remove that uncomfortable womanizing streak I had come to associate with Nate in the past. This might not be the full cinematic representation Uncharted deserves or is capable of, but I'm clamoring for more regardless.

Widely recognized as the planet's worst film director, Uwe Boll embarks on a quest to conquer Hollywood and take vengeance upon the film fanatics striving to destroy him. Filmed over three years on and off the set, 'Raging Boll' is a walk in the shoes of a man people love to hate.

2018年12月22日 评论 a review of - A documentary worth watching if you have even the slightest bit of curiosity in Uwe Boll or his work as the movie covers more than just his controversial 2006 boxing match against film critics. We get an exploration of his career up that point as well as a brief glimpse into who he became afterwards. Finding out that Boll was a just a cinema-passionate dreamer that managed to turn his fantasy of filmmaking into a reality only to be torn apart by the same kind of outcasts he identified with makes the man rather sympathetic in a Tommy Wiseau sort of way. You are likely to find yourself rooting for Boll when the fights finally come. Especially given how obnoxious a couple of his opponents were. This sounds like it would make for a compelling underdog story that may even cause people to like Uwe Boll, but the fact of the matter is that the he's still hated to this day and for good reason. You see, the real tragedy of Boll's story isn't that he suffered personal attacks for making a bunch of really bad movies. It's that he ended up letting the hate get to him and became the very thing he sought to fight in the ring. That's what I really like about this documentary. It doesn't just stop after the match, but instead does what any really good biography should do and covers the more flawed side of it's subject as well. As a result this is almost the entire Uwe Boll story. The film also has a lot to say about the toxicity of internet culture. How it provides a means for people to try and make others as miserable as they are. Something that's only becoming more true with the times. The immense backlash Uwe Boll has received over the years proves to be a good window into this issue. Don't believe me? Then take a look at some of the user reviews for his movies on this site alone. See how many attack the man himself rather than the actual content of the film in question. It's something I myself have been guilty of. As for the flaws of the documentary, you can tell this was a pretty cheap production. Lots of shaky camera work and reused footage during the interviews. One could also argue that perhaps it's a bit one-sided. A lot of the director's opposition is shown to be of the more embarrassing variety. The kind of backwards, hateful nerds that unfortunately are too often the face of geek culture. Now the movie isn't wrong for showing this. These were the kinds of disgusting people at the forefront of the personal attacks Uwe Boll endured, and it's point was to show the worst of the worst, but it doesn't do a great job of showing that were other people out there during this time who were more level-headed and offering genuinely constructive critiques. Raging Boll proves to be a good way to learn about one of the all-time worst filmmakers while simultaneously offering a compelling message that's anti-hate. It doesn't gloss over his flaws in it's effort to be empathetic. We see his arrogance and his hypocrisy alongside the more strangely endearing aspects of his personality. I walked away feeling like I learned a lot not just about Boll, but also how I should write about movies I dislike in a way that's less insulting to the people involved. Also there's a shot of Uwe Boll walking out of a ladies restroom that I can't stop thinking about. Why was he in there? What was wrong with the men's room?

2018年10月12日 评论 a review of 鬼水怪谈 - The tale of two girls who were abandoned by their mothers as children. The first grew up to have a daughter of her own and fights tirelessly to ensure that she never loses her. The second perished in a tragic accident and now haunts a derelict apartment complex. When their paths cross what follows is the emotional and eerie battle of and for a mother's love. It's a horror movie that uses poignant thematic material and human drama to deliver a deeply affecting experience that stabs you in the gut with a knife of terror. Then twists the blade until it burrows a hole up into your heart and fills the wound it left behind with sadness. There's a constant sense of dread. Not out of anticipation for whatever freaky thing the ghost will do next. While the lonely specter stalking Yoshimi and Ikuko is definitely creepy, Dark Water is scary because it poses such a significant threat to the mother-and-daughter relationship at the center of it all. Watching Yoshimi fight the living and the dead to remain with the daughter she loves so much is a powerful method of ensuring the audience is invested in what's happening onscreen right down to their very core. The ending is absolutely devastating. I was left with a physical pain in my chest that made it clear my heart wasn't just broken, but annihilated. Have you ever been too sad to cry? Those already familiar with Hideo Nakata may find this to be remarkably similar to his earlier work Ringu . This could be viewed as a sort of spiritual successor with a hydrophobic spin. The use of water is excellent. Not only does it tie into the history of it's apparition in a clever way, but also allows the more nightmarish moments to have an unearthly quality. Sort of like the "Otherworld" segments in Silent Hill . Just with fluids instead of fire and brimstone. Usually when films choose to explore the effects a missing parent can have on a child, it's done where the father is the one who left or is too busy to have a real presence in their lives. Dark Water instead focuses on the departure of the matriarch and is all the more distressing as a result. A heart-rending and eldritch testimony to the necessity of motherhood. It's conclusion destroyed me, but there is a sweetness to it. Proof that horror can be just as deep as the most unreachable point in any of the world's oceans even when it's not quite as scary.
