2022年9月10日 评论 a review of 玉面情魔 - I consider myself a pretty massive Guillermo del Toro fan. Having made my top two favorite films of all time ( Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water ), he may be my current favorite director. That being said it was hard for me to get excited for this. It just seemed like such a basic, unexciting choice compared to his other work. Especially coming off the back of a best picture winner. Boy, was my stupid self wrong. This is essentially a tale about how cruel people can be. Nearly everybody in it is lying to, manipulating, and/or taking advantage of others for their own personal gain. It shares some similar vibes to Uncut Gems in that we're watching the main character engage in an incredibly risky game that will either lead to a massive payday or just as easily get him killed. All the while being treated to del Toro's always excellent visuals and fantastic performances across the board. Nightmare Alley is one of those rare movies that can keep you hooked without really giving you anyone to truly root for. It's clear early on that Bradley Cooper is not portraying a good person. Instead someone who remorselessly exploits those around him without a care in the world. His self-serving sickness and lust for wealth slowly devours him as he attempts to pull off a con of remarkable complexity and deception against multiple marks at once, while we the audience anxiously wait to see if he'll succeed or get caught by the forces of karma. It's incredibly gripping to watch. If there's one flaw it would be that the middle portion of the feature does lose a bit of steam. After the carnival setting is ditched following the first hour the pacing drops to a noticeable degree. Not enough to ruin the experience, but it can be felt and your interest might wane ever so slightly. Luckily, the final act more than makes up for it with a surge in the stakes and danger that leads to a terrific conclusion. I remember finding del Toro's announcements of the two projects he would be working on upon finishing his 2017 masterpiece to be rather underwhelming. Finally watching the first of them however has fully revealed to me how foolish I was for that. I'm actually super stoked for his upcoming Pinocchio adaptation now. This is his first offering to not feature ghosts, monsters, or any aspect of the supernatural at all. Yet, you wouldn't be able to tell that as it maintains the exact same level of quality as the very best of his filmography. Make no mistake, this is a top notch dramatic thriller well-deserving of nearly winning its director another Academy Award (or three or four) in his past two releases.

2020年9月6日 评论 a review of X战警 - Still holds up extremely well. Might even be timeless. It's pretty amazing that something this fantastical now feels somewhat grounded ever since the MCU came along and basically reinvented the mega-blockbuster, but here we are. The most refreshing thing about this revisitation was seeing how it managed to be serious without sacrificing fun or becoming all grimdark. No one is cracking wise in the face of a potentially world ending threat and the characters deal with complex internal struggles without becoming depressed, moody killers. Essentially allowing it to strike a balance between escapism and gravitas that no other superhero movie has really been able to replicate. It's also one of the few entries in the franchise to nail the whole team dynamic. One of my biggest nitpicks with Fox's handling of the property was how Wolverine-centric it was. So I appreciated how that while the character does still have a more central role here, Rogue is arguably just as significant and the other mutants are given their moments to shine. Except Cyclops who is just sort of there the entire time. The plot is deserving of praise as well. Featuring a threat that is legitimate, but not too grandiose and a well-done exploration of the social and political issues the X-Men encounter as the next step in human evolution. What really gives it power though is how it fleshes out its villain in a manner that allows us to fully understand his motives just as strongly as we do that of the heroes. Maybe even moreso. Because of that, 20 years later Magneto is still easily the best villain in any movie bearing the Marvel moniker to date. A huge reason this has aged so gracefully is that it didn't fall prey to the kind of hyper-ridiculous action that was prevalent in the early 2000s in films like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Daredevil . There's no goofy wire fu or other absurd acts of high-flying martial arts to be found. The powers are all displayed in a cool, straight-faced manner that further exemplifies why any of this works at all. X-Men manages to be self-respecting enough to ensure every aspect is handled with a sense of maturity, while avoiding the morbidity of Zack Snyder DCEU flick and remembering that it is in fact a piece of popcorn entertainment in the process. As a result, it is nothing less than one of the best comic book adaptations ever created.

2019年12月31日 评论 a review of 雷霆沙赞! - Move over Wonder Woman , the DCEU has a new saviour and oddly enough it's a 14 year old. Back in 2010 Kick-Ass answered the question of what would happen if a regular dude tried to be a superhero. This movie shows us how things would turn out if superpowers were given to a kid. What do they have in common? Mark Strong. This is easily the most family-friendly superhero flick across any of the cinematic universes. You get a heartwarming tale about a young boy finding a family with the action and humor on average being more wholesome than the typical film of this ilk. It follows the Marvel formula by making comedy a big part of the experience, but I'd argue it does so in a more natural manner than the MCU. It rarely feels like it's forcing the jokes into each scene. Rather the laughters occurs naturally thanks to David Sandberg portraying the kids as just being kids, albeit in a highly unique situation. I really like how this serves solely as an introduction to the character(s) as it allows the film to stay very tight and focused on the story at hand without getting too bogged down in years of history from the comics. That being said I am left excited by the brief glimpses we were given into all the potential expansion this hero can bring to the DCEU and look forward to seeing his lore explored in sequels. I absolutely love the cast. Zachary Levi is great at capturing that boy trapped in a man's body energy, Jack Dylan Grazer is a gem, Faithe Herman might be the cutest kid alive right now, and Strong makes for a memorable antagonist. His Dr. Sivana might not be any more fleshed out than any other supervillain to grace the bigscreen over the past few years, but he certainly is menacing. Personally, I think he rivals Thanos in terms of fear factor. Shazam! in now way breaks from the superhero movie mold. If anything it's the DC movie that most closely follows the formula established by Marvel's success. Yet, the fact that this character is a fresh face that brings his own unique and exciting possibilities is enough for it to overcome that. It also doesn't hurt that it's so warmhearted and high-spirited.

2018年11月20日 评论 a review of 突袭 - A rookie cop fights for survival when his squad's attempt to take down a crime lord leaves him stranded behind enemy lines in this hyper-violent B-movie. There's some light family drama and corrupt officers with hidden motives, but for the most part this is lite on plot and high on adrenaline. It relies almost entirely on the situation and action to keep you invested. With both being so darn excellent, that's not a bad thing. Environments look pretty cheap and the majority of the furniture are clearly just flimsy props. Yet even when it's totally obvious that a table is only solid enough to easily break when somebody is thrown onto it, the illusion is never broken for more than a second or two. The movie quickly throat chops you back into immersion with it's stunning, fast-paced combat. The blistering firefights at the beginning of the movie are certainly exciting, but things don't really get going until the bullets run dry. Thats when the ferocious martial arts start and your jaw begins to hit the floor with the same frequency as the bodies. Iko Uwais' character isn't some invincible fighting machine. He sweats and bleeds like any man. You feel his desperation and exhaustion in every conflict. Something that gives every broken bone and blow more weight. The only flaw to be found in any of the film's fast and frenzied brawls comes in the form of Pierre Gruno. His slow, lumbering movements seem very out of place in such an energetic movie. Especially when paired with the lightning-fast skills of Uwais and Eka Rahmadia in one of the more thrilling sequences. A kinetic game of cat-and-mouse, this meticulously crafted fight to stay alive will blow your mind. It's a wonderful display of the Indonesian martial art Pencak Silat and one of the best action films of all time.

2018年10月31日 评论 a review of 月光光心慌慌 - I was a little anxious going into this. It's held in such high regard and nearly everything that's followed has been inspired by it in some way. It made me nervous to think that I wouldn't be able to appreciate this universally agreed upon masterpiece because of everything I've watched in the years since it was released. That's what happened with Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Massacre . I respected it for it's legacy and influence, but was ultimately left more annoyed with Leatherface's demented family than frightened. All that worrying proved to be for naught though. On top of aging like a fine wine, everyone who ever borrowed or outright plagiarized from this film failed to capture it's magic in the process. I mean seriously, no one's tried their hands at the first-person perspective from the opening? I would love to see an entire movie made in that style. It gives you the bizarre sensation of floating. As close as you'll ever come to being a passenger in another person's body. This is so much more slow-paced than what you would think. Carpenter really let's you soak in that unmistakable feeling that can only be experienced on October 31st. We get to spend some time with the characters while the masked killer Michael Myers creepily stalks from a distance in a manner that clearly inspired The Strangers and it's sequel Prey at Night . All the while one of the most remarkable soundtracks in all cinema is playing and setting the mood. Just like Dario Argento's Suspiria , the music is an integral part of the experience. The movie wouldn't have been the same without it. Myers is such an enigmatic villain that was begging to explored so it's easy to see why there were so many sequels. Donald Pleasance does an excellent job hinting at the darker qualities driving this killer. Dropping clues about how he's more than just a normal man who suffered a psychotic break as a child. Certain things he says brought to mind demon possession and other supernatural possibilities. I'm curious to see where his backstory goes (if anywhere) in the later films. On top of having such an imposing physical presence, Myers heavy breathing is also somehow a positive distinctive quality. There are a lot of shots that are great at instilling a foreboding sense of doom. Like Laurie's (Curtis) walk down the hall to the only room in the house with a light behind the door in an effort to find out what happened to her friends. Rather than trying to outright terrify, to me it felt like Carpenter was trying to create something more spooky than anything. If I'm right and that is the case then he succeeded marvelously. That kind of tone is so befitting of a movie called and set on halloween. Alright, time to be a dweeb and criticize the few things I didn't like about this undeniably legendary slice (get it? Because he uses a big knife) of horror. Curtis is all around excellent, but when she finally has to start dodging Myers at every stabby turn we have to listen to her constantly sob and mutter to herself and it gets a little irritating because of how forced it feels. The soundtrack, like the aforementioned Suspiria , can be a little too much at times. For example, it flares up every time we see Myers driving behind the girls when they're walking. I mean give it a rest, we already know he's there. A little nitpicky I'll admit, but that might just be a testament to how there isn't really anything you can truly tear this movie apart for. The actual flaws are so small they're practically invisible. This might very well be the best slasher ever made. Certainly the best one I've seen so far. A must watch for horror fans or anyone who loves a good spook in October. Watching this for the first time on halloween felt like I completed some sacred right of passage that anyone who considers themself a true enthusiast of the genre must go through.

2018年10月2日 评论 a review of 阴风阵阵 - Right from the get-go the music sets the tone and prepares you for something sinister. It makes for one memorable opening credits sequence. When the movie actually starts however, the same track is still loudly thrumming in your ears despite the protagonist doing nothing more than arriving at an airport and catching a cab to the dancing academy during a thunderstorm. I can't help but wonder if it's opening moments might not have been a little more effective had director Dario Argento let the setting create an atmosphere by itself in silence rather than trying to force one with a full-on aural assault that doesn't relent until the film's first kill. Luckily, after the first chapter's bloody conclusion Argento makes more functional use of the soundtrack from prog-rock band "Goblin" and it becomes one of the film's most magical qualities. Further amplifying it's hallucinatory fever dream effect. Imagine something with the surrealness of Jacob's Ladder and the visual style of Stanley Kubrick à la The Shining or maybe even A Clockwork Orange and you have Suspiria. It's liberal use of colors and unique camera angles make it both beautiful and unsettling. Argento is a master of atmosphere. He manages to give Suspiria the qualities of both a supernatural threat and a slasher film. It's really quite hard to classify just what kind of horror film it is. It's also a bit hard to decipher what it all means. However, even at just face value it's an excellent movie. I did find myself once or twice drifting to my phone during some slow moments, but I always found my attention quickly restored as the unexplainable began to happen once again. It's an original and entrancing experience. A legendary standout in the genre for good reason. Not to be missed.
