2022年12月18日 评论 a review of 刺猬索尼克2 - After years of being considered the absolute lowest of the low when it came to cinema, video game adaptations have been making something of a comeback as a more accepted form of entertainment for the masses as of late thanks to the freedom granted by the current superhero age of the silver screen. By far the biggest and most surprising success of their modern resurgence into prominence has been SEGA's iconic blue mascot. The ultra-fast hedgehog unbelievably managed to defy the odds and become recognized as a welcomed bit of fun for the whole family in his previous outing, largely by adopting the MCU's tried-and-true formula for success that has proven infallible so far. A path this sequel continues down to even more outstanding results. With the origin story and worldbuilding now out of the way, the door has been opened for these films to explore all of the weird, wild corners of their source material and begin introducing more of the big characters fans are dying to see. Something that has immediately started here and the results are one incredibly odd story. It won't faze anyone already familiar with the ludicrous, bizarre plots from the games (particularly the 3D ones) and is still somehow remarkably more coherent than a lot of recent Marvel projects, but no doubt the uninitiated will be left a little stupified by the sheer strangeness of the narrative. The movie is able to get away with it though due to how funny, charming, and exciting it is to watch. The overall sense of humor is much sharper. There continues to be stuff such as the occasional overly juvenile fart gag or whatnot that will only work for the youngest members of the audience, yet on the whole the variety and range of jokes ensures there are plenty of hilarious moments here for everyone regardless of their age. By far the adventure's biggest strength however is its heroes. These anthropomorphic critters are delightful and incredibly endearing. Even their human counterparts, which have always been the low point for the franchise in its other formats, are a likable part of the experience. There's an entire subplot surrounding Marsden and Sumpter attending the wedding for a returning member of the supporting cast that, while entirely unnecessary, I'm glad was included because of how much it made me laugh. This ability for viewers to enjoy and care about everyone onscreen REGARDLESS of which side of the conflict they're on (Carrey's Dr. Robotnik really won me over this outing) makes the bombastic action all the more thrilling, despite some shoddy green CGI used on the main villain. Essentially allowing Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to succeed at everything it sets out to do and at a level of quality that rivals the works coming from Disney and Warner Bros. these days. It's not a stretch to think that if the next installment performs well these flicks could match, and quite possibly surpass, the longevity and box-office returns Paul W.S. Anderson managed to achieve with Resident Evil years prior. This isn't just one of the best video game adaptations of all time, but also the best superhero movie of 2022.

2021年7月23日 评论 a review of 发条橙 - Teenagers scare the living sh*t out of me They could care less as long as someone'll bleed -My Chemical Romance A depiction of the violent nature of youth and a satire of the criminal justice system. Due to a mix of immaturity, a lack of real-world experience, and being a mess of hormones teens tend to lack empathy and often act on their cruelest instincts or sexual impulses without any remorse. That's what gets portrayed here as we follow a high school aged gang leader as he and his fellow "Droogs" go around assaulting, raping, and commiting various other crimes against anyone they see fit simply because they can and it's fun for them. The film does an excellent job of capturing all the qualities of a teenage sociopath in its narrator/protagonist "Alex." He's arrogant, manipulative, has no sense of guilt, spouts off borderline unintelligible jargon just like today's buzzword obsessed culture does, and when he finally receives some comeuppance from those he had harmed in the past he even has the audacity to play the victim. In an atypical move he's an intentionally unlikable, villainous, and downright evil focal character making for a unique viewing experience. All of this is brought to life by a fantastic Malcolm McDowell performance. He's enterprising, aggressive, outgoing, young, bold, vicious. He'll do. This naturally makes the moral of the story pretty murky. I mean, it's not like you can root for or sympathize with such a vile scumbag when he gets caught, jailed, and begins to experience the same kind of brutality he once dished out. Something I really struggled with when reading the book. Luckily, Stanley Kubrick made the message much clearer in this adaptation. This is a scathing critique of prisoner reform programs and the unethical practices going on behind the scenes that don't succeed at getting these kind of violent offenders to turn over a new leaf before releasing them back into society anyways, with some shots taken at governmental corruption along the way. As you might expect given the subject material being covered here, the content in this movie is quite harsh. There are fairly graphic displays of sexual assault and torture. Kubrick managed to make this watchable in spite of all that however by intelligently pulling his punches where he needed to and imbuing the whole thing with a rather cartoonish vibe. A clash between rival gangs, for example, plays out like something you would see in a Tom and Jerry short. Stuff such as the way the world is filled with erotic imagery meant to symbolize the lustful fixations of those in their pubescent years gives off a ridiculous and even playful tone that makes some of the more barbarous moments easier to sit through, but never to the point where it fails to acknowledge or represent the severity of them. This a borderline masterpiece and one of those rare examples of a film being better than the book it's based on, if only because it's themes have been made easier to decipher. The sole complaint I have that could be considered anything more than a personal nitpick extends to the rape sequences. These scenes thankfully cut off before reaching I Spit on Your Grave levels of explicit, but you still see restrained women getting forcefully stripped naked. The problem is that these parts feel rather fetishized as if Kubrick is unnecessarily throwing the exposed breasts and buttocks onscreen for some cheap titillation, which if that is truly the case would be disgusting given the context. Outside of that there's little to take fault with here. A classic for a reason, this is a one of a kind piece of cinema that provides a Looney Tunes gonzo look into the mind of an unrestrained juvenile delinquent with meanings that can still be dissected and discussed for years to come. It's practically mandatory viewing for anyone with a serious appreciation for the medium, regardless of whether you typically shy away from such hardcore offerings or not.

2021年6月16日 评论 a review of 异魔 - There are two things George Romero loved bringing to theater screens: zombies and socially conscious horror films. Usually both at the same time. With Monkey Shines he delivered a twisted little story about the evils of animal testing. It follows a quadriplegic man as he forms an unhealthy bond with a lab-animal-turned-service-monkey named "Ella." Things start off cute enough. The adorable Capuchin at first proves to be a charming, shockingly intelligent helper for the disabled protagonist, and the master/pet affection that grows as a result is genuinely sweet leading to quite a few moments that will surely make you go "aww 😊." However, it's not long until you begin noticing that the two are having a very negative effect on each other's behavior and the chimp crap hits the fan. This seems like something that shouldn't work at all as the concept doesn't sound even the slightest bit frightening, but Romero is able to make a surprising amount of tension come from this game of cat-and-mouse with a homicidal primate. On top of making the leading man largely immobile and therefore very vulnerable, he also gives the house where most of the action takes place an atmosphere not unlike that of one in a traditional haunting flick when the situation really begins getting dangerous. Your suspension of disbelief will receive a strong test though when the psychic connection between the man and the beast is introduced. This is only a problem because it's never explained how that's possible. Especially since another character has to inject himself with the same compound being used on Ella in order to experience similar results to his friend who was able to attain them through mere proximity. It never manages to bridge that gap between the scientific and the supernatural. By the time the credits roll as far as we know maybe this monkey just "shines" in the same way as Danny Torrance. That flaw aside however, you'll find no monkey business here. This is a very effective bit of simian terror. Something that is in no small part due to it doing its own unique thing to the point where it still feels original and inimitable to this day. I mean, it's animal rights horror for crying out loud. How many times have you seen that before?

2019年12月15日 评论 a review of 黑色圣诞节 - The holidays are often the busiest time of the year, and Black Christmas plays off of this well. The sorority girl protagonists are so distracted with the hustle and bustle of the season, as well as the everyday life problems that are typical for so many young adults during their college years, that they naturally overlook key details about the events happening around them. Allowing a killer to move amongst them undetected and pick them off one by one as they separate. With his cryptic, lewd phone calls and other forms of unhinged behavior, the antagonist of the movie really made my skin crawl. The way he's always obscured in shadow, never allowing us to have a good look at him makes him far more enigmatic and terrifying than any of the unkillable masked slasher icons everybody is familiar with. I love that we learn virtually nothing about him. He really is just some random guy who could be just about anyone. Something the movie tries to play off of with a fake out identity reveal. Which I'm sure was great back when this was first released, but ultimately doesn't prove very effective today do to how many times it has been used in other films since then. Black Christmas actually has a pretty slow build-up. Something that allows the mystery to be fleshed out, tension to rise, and the sense of humor to shine. While I wouldn't call it a flat out horror-comedy, there are definitely moments placed throughout that are meant to make you laugh. The movie never goes out of its to set these moments up though. Instead they seem to come entirely from just how believable the characters and events are. I'm amazed by the movie's ability to capture life's real, naturally occurring humor through things like the incompetence of the police force or the uncaring irresponsibility of the college students. The personalities and little histories of the characters themselves are also revealed to the audience in a very naturalistic way. There's not exactly any time taken to flesh out any of these girls to us. Instead we're thrown in with them in the middle of a small Christmas house party. From there it's their actions that define them and tell us who they are. The writing is so strong and the vision for each one so clear that you can easily see how true-to-life they are. This allows each one's subplot, no matter how small, to standout in our minds even if it only exists as a means of separating said character from the group so that they can be picked off. Much like The Strangers , this film was inspired by true events and it's that sense of believability that makes it so forceful. The way it makes thoughtful rather than sporadic use of its blood and violence makes each death more impactful, to say nothing of the strength of its character work. This is simply an all around excellent slasher that will have you (carefully) checking the attic before you go to bed.

2018年10月20日 评论 a review of 看见恶魔 - Is it possible to break a monster incapable of feeling pain or fear? One man sets out to try after losing his fiancé to a demented serial killer and rapist. What he begins to find out is that his quest for revenge could change him forever. Turning him into the very thing he seeks to destroy. It's a moral quandary we've seen before, but rarely at this level of unflinching brutality. Make no mistake, you will most definitely see the devil because this movie is a trip through hell. Kim Jee-woon shows us the darkest, most unsafe side of the world. Secluded areas where a seemingly endless array of psychopaths own the night and collect as many victims as possible. The content is incredibly graphic and I'm not just talking about the violence. Torture and gore are certainly the foremost vices the sick predators of this film like to engage in, but they have a tendency to explore other disturbing perversions as well. Such as sexual assault, cannibalism, and even pedophilia. It's a dark and grotesque movie for sure, but there's a certain absurdity to it. While never an easy watch, a pitch black sense of humor keeps the harsh content from ever becoming too much to handle. At least for the more seasoned viewer. I did notice where it went too far with the joke on one occasion. The almost cartoonish mishandling of a severed head by a member of a forensics team that causes it to come spilling out for all to see was in bad taste. For the most part though these more comedic moments do a lot to a touch of lightness to what could have otherwise been an overbearingly revolting experience. The two lead performances are incredible. Lee Byung-hun is a sympathetic protagonist even at his lowest point because of the emotion he brings to the character. Choi Min-sik is hands down one of the most terrifying serial killers in all of cinema. He's menacing, dangerous, and creepy. They're the perfect rivals. Both fundamentally broken in different ways with unrelenting natures destined to be the downfall of them both. Their battle to ruin the other person is an action-packed and tense ride right up until the unforgettable conclusion. No one wins in this exploration of depravity and vengeance. No one but the audience that is.

2018年6月22日 评论 a review of 鬼妈妈 - A toned down version of the surprisingly terrifying children's book by Neil Gaiman. Parents will likely find this to be a much more suitable version of the story as the horror is downplayed without sacrificing the magic and splendor inherent in the original written format. It's still got all of the stuff kids will love, they'll just be less likely to have nightmares after watching it. That's not to say there still isn't some intense stuff going on. The twisted final act is filled with images that could freak out the kiddies. The adults are the ones who are going to pick up on the really disturbing stuff though. Such as that symbolic opening credits sequence and the creepy little gestures from Coraline's "other" parents. Everyone will get a fright from the semi-naked old ladies though. There's a little something here for everyone. Henry Sellick has expanded on the book with a new subplot surrounding an original character whose grandma has ties to the weird events at hand and the character of Coraline herself is much more fleshed out with a larger personality. She's an empowering, clever, and quick-witted protagonist who always has something amusingly surly to say. She's immediately lovable. Something that is in no small part due to Dakota Fanning's delivery. The original flourishes to the tale do enough to set it apart from the source material without straying far away from it. As someone who has read Gaiman's Coraline, I found certain originalities gave me compelling new ways to envision things upon revisiting it. The biggest and most appreciated change/addition in this film is that we get to spend more time seeing what Coraline's family life is like. It adds new dimension to the events. The stop-motion animation is gorgeous. Everything is so bright and colorful during the pre-"something's not right here" set pieces. Even when things start to lean on darker, gloomier, and more forbidding environments doused in greys and blacks, there's enough life in the visuals to keep things exciting for your eyes. The character and creature designs are excellent. The gothic fairytale style imagery would make Tim Burton cum in his pants. The soundtrack, like the majority of the movie, will enchant the youngsters while their parents pick up on it's eerie nature. Coraline is an all around delight for any age range. The younger viewers will have a blast with the world, spectacle, and charming title character. Older audiences will too, but with the added benefit on noticing just how freaky everything is. One of my favorite aspects of Coraline the movie is that it manages to be slick enough to hide the fact that it's a horror film from the target audience. Unlike the book which I have a hard time believing wouldn't severely ruin a child's sleep schedule for a while. There's enough humor, action, heart, and adventure to make it a standout in the already pretty impressive array of notable stop-motion family films.
