7.8 (6 个评分) Slipknot 类型: 摇滚
发布日期 2019年8月9日 出版发行: Roadrunner
SLIPKNOT has set "We Are Not Your Kind" as the title of its new album, due on August 9 via Roadrunner. Today the band has shared the album's first single "Unsainted", which is available at all DSPs along with an official music video. Directed by the band's own M. Shawn Crahan, the "Unsainted" video, and the track itself, offer a glimpse at the future of one of rock's most popular, and deeply enigmatic bands.
Guitarist Jim Root noted: "This is most time we've had to write a record, and work stuff out together. One of my inspirations this time around was those artists that recorded full length albums — not just songs. While the industry is moving toward singles, SLIPKNOT wanted to make an album experience, front to back."
"We Are Not Your Kind" is available for pre-order today with exclusive bundles available at Slipknot1.com. The disc was once again recorded at a Los Angeles studio with producer Greg Fidelman, who engineered and mixed SLIPKNOT's 2004 album "Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)" and helmed 2014's ".5: The Gray Chapter".
"These days the art we are making comes with the highest reward, because it's taken the most time," added Crahan. "Almost four years to create this emotion and temperature, and the reward now is nothing short of salvation."
SLIPKNOT's sixth album does not include the song "All Out Life", which was released last October. The track's accompanying video was also directed by Crahan.
Singer Corey Taylor recently said that "All Out Life" is not representative of the type of music fans can expect to hear on SLIPKNOT's long-awaited new LP. "It's a great tune, it's a heavy tune, but it's not a good representation of the darkness that is involved with the music," he told 95.5 KLOS's Full Metal Jackie. "We are taking some really cool risks musically. We're dipping into some evil we haven't played with in a long time, let's put it that way. It's got little hints of everything we've ever done, but it's got some of the heaviest stuff we've ever done as well."
Asked what it was like for him to go back to some of those darker lyrical themes, Taylor said: "It's been very cathartic. I've got a lot I've gotta say and a lot I wanna say, and this feels like the right time to do it."
Some of SLIPKNOT's new album also deals with Taylor's depression that led to a divorce and forced him to "figure out who I was" without relapsing into substance abuse.
"All I was doing was giving and I found myself absolutely, completely tapped," he told the Des Moines Register. "You could see it in my skin. You could see it in my eyes. That's basically the journey I'm going to take people on this album … show them what happens to depression when you have no chemicals to fall back on."
".5: The Gray Chapter" was released following a six-year hiatus during which founding SLIPKNOT bassist Paul Gray died and drummer Joey Jordison was dismissed.
SLIPKNOT's "Knotfest Roadshow" headline tour will take place in North America this summer. VOLBEAT, GOJIRA and BEHEMOTH will join as special guests on all dates.
Produced by Live Nation, the 29-city outing will kick off July 26 in Mountain View, California at Shoreline Amphitheater and continue through September 8 where it will conclude with a performance at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Texas.

2023年3月28日 评论 a review of 续命之徒:绝命毒师电影 - Before jumping into this movie I rewatched the hit series it serves as a sequel to in its entirety for the first time in years. I think that was probably the best decision I could have made. While I fully believe you can watch this without any sort of refresher beforehand and still thoroughly enjoy it, I feel like doing so allowed me to pick up on little details or touches that I might have otherwise missed and all while the experience of the preceding 5 season journey remained fresh in my brain. Plus, it was just a good excuse to revisit what may be the best TV show of all time. El Camino picks up from literally right where Breaking Bad ’s climax left off. It serves to tie up that one remaining loose end by answering the question of what exactly happened to Jesse Pinkman after he drove off crying and screaming into the night upon being rescued from captivity. With exception to the higher budget cinematography and heavy usage of flashbacks (all of which add new layers to the story rather than simply rehashing old information), in a lot of ways this feels just like a missing episode of the show. A lost epilogue, if you will. Which is to say things start off a bit on the slower side, but gradually increase in intensity until building up to tense, “how the heck are they going to get out of this?!” scenarios. Vince Gilligan is both writing and directing this feature, and he imbues the proceedings not only with the levels of edge-of-your-seat excitement and heartbreaking/warming emotion you would expect, but also an element of humor that harkens back to the vein of dark comedy that was always present throughout its predecessor’s run, although most prominently in its earlier days. On top of seamlessly reviving the tone of his original creation here, he also ensures a lot of familiar faces return. Even very minor characters like Old Joe (Larry Hankin) make an appearance. What’s great about this is that their presence makes sense for the action at hand rather than feeling like cheap cameos included solely for fan service. Truly, about the only real issue I found with all this stems from how many years had passed from between when this was filmed and “ Felina ” originally aired. The passage of that time is reflected in how some of the actors now look. Jesse Plemons is no longer the young, skinny kid he once was for example, and it kind of breaks the illusion that these events are supposed to be taking place immediately following the ones from a finale that came out roughly 4-5 years before anyone involved in this ever so much as stepped a foot on set when you see that. Ultimately though, it did little to hinder my enjoyment. The film brings a definitive conclusion to an unresolved arc that arguably never needed one, and the Gilligan-verse as a whole is all the sweeter because of it. The fact that this acts as a worthy, logical continuation rather than merely preying on nostalgia makes it a legitimate treat for BB  fans, and I can’t recommend it enough to them because of that (the uninitiated however, need not apply as they will be TOTALLY lost). Now, if you’ll excuse me I need to go and finally watch Better Call Saul .

2026年1月28日 评论 a review of 惩罚者 - Before the MCU came into being and saved the day, a lot of Marvel characters were having a rough time finding success on the big-screen during the 2000s. Spider-Man and the X-Men were doing fine, and even Blade did well enough to get himself a trilogy. The rest of the Marvel heroes though? Not so much. They were met with poor reviews and disappointed fans. Even The Punisher was met with critical backlash, although for the life of me I can't see why. It's an awesome origin story that plays out as a superhero revenge story. It's dark, brutal, and Thomas Jane absolutely nails it as Frank Castle. There are even some nice bits of dark humor, scenes pulled straight from the comics, and is just as violent as one would expect a Punisher movie to be. Unlike Daredevil it actually manages to nail the mature, gritty tone. Something a lot of superhero movies have struggled with over the years and even still do. It's interesting to see how many familiar faces were pulled from Punisher comics to fill out the supporting cast. The movie offers quite a bit of fan-service for those who are clued in. The mob family Castle sees himself fighting against feels a little generic, and Travolta is surprisingly flat as the main villain, but none of that gets in the way of how satisfying the violence is. It's also got an old-school feel. Revenge has never been quite so satisfying. Yes, the early 2000s weren't the kindest to a lot of Marvel's characters. The critics took shots at The Punisher that honestly feel undeserved. During a time when Daredevil, The Fantastic Four, and even Hulk were failing to do those classic characters justice (they really tried though, I'll give them that), The Punisher stood tall and delivered. It's one heck of a satisfying revenge flick, a bleak vigilante tale, a throwback to the gritty action movies of the 70's and 80's, and something truly different from every other superhero movie out there. It's a treat for fans of the comics and a great action movie for everyone else.

2023年1月28日 评论 a review of 克苏鲁 - Set against the backdrop of a world ravaged by global warming where the water levels are rising and the last remaining polar bear not in captivity has just died, Cthulhu tells the tale of a gay man forced to return to the small town and family he escaped to settle the estate of his recently deceased mother. While grappling with the returning surge of painful memories and contentious interactions with his surviving parent, he stumbles upon the twisted machinations of a cult getting ready to awaken their slumbering god. In suitably Lovecraftian fashion, Cthulhu's return is an inevitability in this movie. An event inked into the script that none of its characters can avoid. As a result, the hero's quest isn't to prevent the coming destruction. He'll spend the entire runtime just as confused by the local's cryptic ramblings or warnings and the moments both horrific and supernatural as you'll be (particularly if you're unfamiliar with the mythos' lore). No, his journey is set to take him to the final instance before what's left of humanity is engulfed by madness where he must make a choice to either stay true to himself and who he loves, or embrace his cursed lineage and relent to his bigoted, religious zealot father's last attempt to bring him into the fold before the end of everything. The writing duo of Grant Cogswell and Dan Gildark approach their allegory for homophobia from a unique angle that I haven't seen taken before in what little queer cinema I'm familiar with. Being based on the part hereditary horror The Shadow over Innsmouth , themes of procreation and conception take center stage. Every step on the lead's path to his ultimate destiny is plagued by attacks on his perceived inability and, more accurately in his case due to surrogacy being a thing, lack of desire to produce a biological offspring. Usually in the form of twisted visions brought about by a cosmic entity depicting nightmares like children trapped in metal cages on beaches, screaming with their arms sticking out of the holes in the sides as the tide slowly rolls in to take them away forever. There's a moment near the end of the film that has many possible meanings. One of which I can't get into for fear of pretty significant spoilers. In it though the protagonist's father asks him, "would you like to see your children?" He then proceeds to lead him to a bathtub filled with blood and something even more horrifying that we don't get shown, but what I think is the patriarch's demented manifestation of what he believes are the grandchildren his son could have given him, but now never can as he spilt his seed in sex with another man. Something symbolized in an earlier flashback that shows him masturbating under a pier into the water with his childhood lover as they recite the names girls they go to school with or attractive actresses neither of them actually want to sleep with in an effort to share some sort of sexual intimacy while still maintaining a thin illusion of straightness before either was brave enough to come out to the other. One thing that becomes abundantly clear while watching is that everyone involved cared deeply about this project. Some were even invested enough to make themselves homeless financing it. I see a lot of people complain about the acting or budgetary constraints though. Criticisms I feel are wildly overblown. Naturally scenery is used to create some beautiful shots and the performances are far better than I was led to believe going into this. Simply put, The Room this ain't. What I believe they actually have a problem with, but don't know how to express is the script. An issue typical of many Lovecraft-derived films is that they're often made by author's fans, for the author's fans and tend to assume viewers have prior knowledge about how the universe he created operates as a result. Cthulhu is by far the worst offender of this line of thought that I've seen to date. It's filled with surreal, inexplicable, or just plain unexplained occurrences in a manner not dissimilar to the very open to interpretation Jacob's Ladder that will leave the previously initiated scratching their heads, much less the unacquainted. Essentially, this is as close a Lovecraft flick has come to being Silent Hill (the game, not the movie). While it can and definitely will leave you feeling lost at points, this will be an absolute treat for those with an appreciation for hellish dreamscape horror and serves as the perfect example of the genre's ability to delve into complex real-world struggles in thoughtful ways. The lore of the Cthulhu mythos is so tightly entwined with the plot's subtextual exploration of the specific aforementioned aspect of the wide-ranging discrimination the homosexual community faces that you couldn't just swap out the fictional religion presented here with any actual one and get quite the same results, making it the most creative and unique cinematic usages of the source material that I've come across thus far. After all this time the creators have naturally moved past the belief this could still make them money when it couldn't even recoup the costs it took to make it when it released, so the director himself actually uploaded the entire film on YouTube for free back in 2018. Providing an easy means of viewing a work of legitimate quality right from the minds of passionate people, and I highly recommend doing so.

2022年11月19日 评论 a review of 疾速追杀2 - Feels like it picks up right where the first film left off, tying up that one remaining loose end of what happened to Wick's car. Something that if you're like me you wondered about upon finishing the original. It serves as a great way of opening Chapter 2 up with a bang and introduces us to just how much more stylish things are than in its predecessor. It doesn't take long for this sequel to pick up its own plot however. One that I personally think has a few writing issues. After finally righting the last of Iosef's wrongs, Wick tries to settle back into retirement when a face from his past shows up asking him to repay a debt that he is held to by more than just honor, but the actual laws of the assassin/criminal hierarchy he once worked under as well. John of course refuses, leading to his creditor retaliating by destroying the portion of his civilian life he had left. It's certainly a decent setup that allows the movie to naturally dive deeper into the rules of the shadowy world its stars inhabit while also revealing how much of its hero's legend has been overblown. Yet, it also serves to make the titular protagonist seem a little dumb. It makes no sense for him to refuse knowing the repercussions for doing so, to the point where another character even asks him "what did you think would happen?" You could argue it was done to give him a reason to seek revenge again, but that would have been handled later on when the villain inevitably double crossed him anyways. It's just a bit illogical. That doesn't stop the action from delivering though. I'm not sure how I feel about scenes like the one where a fight leads to the combatants falling down a comically large flight of stairs straight out of a slapstick comedy, but there are moments such as the duel of silenced shots being traded in a crowd of people without alerting any of the bystanders that stand as some of my favorite in the entire genre. I love the increased amount of blood effects from the headshots and they even gave Wick a pair of similarly skilled rivals to battle in the form of rapper/actor Common and Ruby Rose. The latter of whom I particularly enjoyed. Sure, Mark Dacascos and Daniel Bernhardt will likely get the nod from others due to being more formidable (one of them even kicking John's butt in the prior outing), but for me Rose is the most memorable of Wick's foes to date. Overall, this a worthy follow-up that provides the return of the spectacular, stunning thrills we all wanted more of. And oh my goodness, that ending! The conclusion makes you excited for the third entry not only because of what it lays the groundwork for, but also via the strength of everything you just witness beforehand. So although admittedly more flawed, the second John Wick sits alongside it's predecessor as the peak of Western action cinema nonetheless.

2022年10月15日 评论 a review of 霓虹恶魔 - White Women are the Devil: The Movie Alright, so maybe that's a bit harsh. It's not like men aren't capable of the exact same kind of pettiness and insecurity when faced with another male they feel is a threat to their position. It's something I've personally experienced in my life (in a church no less 🙄). This film just deals with those issues from a strictly female perspective and if we're being honest the Western standards of beauty have led to a universal societal fetishization/worship/desire/uplifting of (most) Caucasian girls that will never allow a woman of color to reach the level of status in life that any of the characters here have. I've heard so much about how gorgeous this is. Refn seems to have built a fanbase partially out of people who solely value the visual component of cinema and happily proclaim him as some sort of filmmaking god for his unique stylistic flourishes. And hey, you can't deny he makes good looking stuff. The meticulous cinematography, what appears to be careful positioning of every actors' individual body parts in some scenes, and of course his unabashed love for freaking neon colors. The ending credits sequence is even a bougie fragrance ad turned James Bond music video. My incredibly limited and previously unfulfilling experience with the man's work thus far gave me the vague impression that he was possibly the type to painstakingly craft a work of art in every shot without much true concern in regards to whether or not he was telling a tale that had any sort of point or meaning. Luckily, he seems to have something to say here. The message is incredibly shallow in a lot of ways, but at least there appears to be a hint of a brain behind the beauty. The plot covers themes of the dangers life can present to young girls on their own (particularly if they're pretty), the malicious sly power games ladies play, the modeling industry's regular usage and abandonment of women, the narcissism that can grow when all anybody tells you is how perfect you are, and plenty of other morals along similar lines. I remember back to my first real job working at a dental office as a teenage gofer and floater after school. I was the only guy there with exception to the dentist himself. It's always stuck with me how, while for the most part especially restrained whenever I was around, there was the identical underlying hostility hidden beneath a thin veneer of civility between those adults that I had noticed in the chicks from my highschool and countless teen flicks over the years that of course went off like an atomic bomb every once in a while, always claiming a casualty or two. It's that same subtle, ever ready to explode tone Neon Demon expertly manages to capture in its feminine interactions up until things get REALLY savage. It's magnificently used to build a constant air of tension. Every barbed remark causally delivered with venom from behind a smile by these blondes makes it clear things could (and will) get violent fast. Yet, even the clear villains of the bunch aren't portrayed as inherently awful people. You'll hate them for their cruelty, but simultaneously pity and empathize with their struggle because it's the expectations and requirements the systems in place have placed on them that made them that way. So your heart breaks for them just as much as you'd like to see each one die painfully. As for the actual horror portion, this is exceptionally slow burn. When the action does finally kick off however, viewers are treated to some sick, twisted, and downright shocking moments that will stick with them long after the credits have rolled. I'm not talking about the gore either. The envelope gets pushed in a particular sequence with Jenna Malone for example, that I'm not sure even a lot of exploitation movies would try. I legitimately wish I could unsee it. It could haunt me until the end of my days and if I ever meet her I'm punching her square in the face for how well she sold/got into that. This will offend some, delight others, and leave many wondering what all the fuss is about coming from either direction. I worry I may have started at the wrong end of Refn's career because it seems like with his latest efforts that the success of Drive caused him to crawl so far up his own anus that he's started making pretentious arthouse-wannabe violence pieces that aren't as deep as he thinks, and he can't tell due to not realizing that the ones who are continuing to call him a genius are simply whores for aesthetics and imagery above anything else. Still, only my second of his works and I've been given more to write, talk, and think about than I have in what feels like years. So regardless if this is the "style over substance" dreck its detractors say it is, the rest of the guy's filmography has my interest.

2022年7月24日 评论 a review of 欧比旺 - Nice to see Disney finally acknowledging the prequel era a little bit. Don't get me wrong, this still takes place in that post-RotS , pre- A New Hope safe space that Kathleen Kennedy seems absolutely terrified to move away from, but at the same time it feels tailor-made for those who grew up with that overly-hated second trilogy. It's the Star Wars content I've been most looking forward to for some time now. My favorite character in this massive, media-spanning franchise has always been Obi-Wan, and given what a tiny part he had in the OT that is in no small part due to Ewan McGregor's performance. So getting to see him step back into that role, alongside other returning faces from those same movies, hit all the right nostalgic notes for me while also providing a story with some actual significance in the canon due to the way it shows how the legendary Jedi went from being the broken man we saw at the end of Episode III to the reinvigorated wise mentor who would lead Luke on the first steps of his journey in Episode IV. So this isn't just dusting off a fan favorite for a quick good time Solo -style, but actually provides the last essential piece of history for one of the franchise's most important personas. Kenobi's entire arc here sees him forced to face the demons of his past in a struggle that's as much internal as it is external. A conflict that ultimately allows him to rediscover a sense of peace, understanding, and his faith. It carries profound themes of self-forgiveness (particularly if what happened wasn't truly your fault), letting go of trauma, and forging a new, healthier path. I hear a lot of people complaining about Third Sister Reva, but while it may be a bit redundant her inclusion really helps to hammer that message home even further. All the underlying depth of its subtext wouldn't mean much however if the miniseries wasn't fun to watch. Luckily the core dynamic between the titular hero and the child-aged version of a very familiar princess is absolutely charming, and there were still plenty of tense moments that had my heart skipping a beat despite the fact that its prequel nature meant I knew who was in real danger or not. This period in the saga is also excellently brought to life with an appropriate tone of hopelessness and desperation similar to Rogue One as the good people in the galaxy far, far away are forced into hiding or subjugation to survive being hunted. By far the greatest source of excitement though has got to be Darth Vader. It's been touted across countless films, shows, and literature how those under the Empire's rule lived in complete terror of his immense power, but this is the first piece of the fiction I've come across that's allowed us to see it for ourselves. The Sith lord is simply terrifying here, performing feats straight out of The Force Unleashed video game. Something made all the sweeter thanks to the unfairly treated Hayden Christensen coming back to don the iconic helmet. The action is of a grittier nature than we typically get from the brand as well, with lightsabers getting forsaken for some old fashioned fisticuffs and displays of the force that are more massive and bombastic than anything in any of the 9 films prior. It's refreshing to receive a project that seems built from the ground up for the portion of the community that's been largely ignored since George Lucas sold the rights to his space opera baby. Especially since it provides the final vital chapter in the history of its protagonist. Those "fans" who have been upset about everything since the first two-thirds of Return of the Jedi are better off passing, as this serves as a continuation to a part of the saga they have no appreciation for anyways. Yet, for those of us who actually like Star Wars ? There are a few minor niggles with things like characters inexplicably choosing to not wipe out certain threats or how apparently taking a laser sword to the gut isn't fatal anymore, but at long last we have been given the full picture of Obi-Wan's life, and that is worth celebrating.

2022年7月10日 评论 a review of 尚气与十环传奇 - It's kind of staggering how Marvel managed to perfect the blockbuster formula to ensure consistent financial and critical success. The downside is thanks to their hesitancy to stray away from that established structure and the plethora of copycats hoping to capture even a hint of the same glory has led to an overall vibe of familiarity in the movie theaters these days. That's what makes Shang-Chi so special. All the same elements are in place, but it manages to avoid feeling like simply another MCU product by ditching the whole superhero angle altogether. The protagonist is a regular dude who just so happens to be great at Kung Fu. He has no powers, works a normal job, and isn't out to save the world (at first). The story here is the most self-contained in the MCU. You wouldn't be even able to tell it was part of that shared universe if it weren't for the occasional brief cameo, the efforts to fix the whole Iron Man 3 Mandarin debacle, and that crap after the credits. It's a small scale, personal tale about a guy fighting for and with his family, that eventually gets all mystical. Gone are the capes, costumes, and world ending threats. In their place is an Asian martial arts fantasy epic that feels wonderfully fresh in this era of convention. The only disappointing part is the lengths the post-credits endings go to in order to ensure us that these characters will become more involved in the larger picture of the MCU going forward, by doing things like having them meet some of the Avengers or (ugh) giving the protagonist powerful magical items that remove his need to rely on those exciting hand-to-hand combat skills which carried all the action for two hours prior. I would honestly prefer it if this bunch could have stayed in their own little corner of this grand cinematic world somewhat disconnected from everything else, and considering the best parts of "phase 4" I've seen to this point (I am admittedly a little behind) have been the ones in which the leads DON'T have superhuman abilities I'm not convinced lightning will strike twice for the already promised sequel. Whatever the case ends up being for its continuations however, it won't change the fact that this is truly one of the franchise's best outings and with its most relatable cast of heroes (yes, Katy counts as a hero too) thus far.

2022年4月16日 评论 a review of 预产期 - Probably Todd Phillips most underappreciated work. Earlier efforts like Old School and Road Trip might nowadays be regularly subjected to a sort of retroactive criticism as a result of the current standards of political correctness, but still stand out as two of the more recognizable pieces of early 2000s era raunch. Meanwhile the Hangover trilogy is straight-up iconic, and even War Dogs receives credit for marking a transition in the director's career into more serious material that quickly opened the door for him to make Joker . This however? It sits alongside School for Scoundrels as a movie no one ever really talks about much, and that's pretty sad. This is a better Hangover sequel than any of the actual Hangover sequels were. Zack Galifianakis is essentially playing the character of "Alan" again, only instead of being paired with Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms he's making life very hard for a high-strung version of Tony Stark, who instead of a cool flying supersuit has an expectant wife who's about ready to deliver that he has to get to. Naturally, unforseen consequences force them to drive across country together and plenty of hilarious misadventures ensue. The comedic material ranks among the best Philips has ever concocted. The surprising chemistry between the seemingly mismatched stars allows the angry (on Downey's part) dialog exchanges to land with particularly humorous effect, while the variety of crazy set pieces manage to avoid the laughter reducing overreliance on guns and legitimate danger that plagued so many other releases back in the 2010s (i.e. Identity Theft ). The consequences, or actually lack thereof, of some of the more legally questionable exploits carry a noticeable lack of reality (you're telling me nobody put an APB out on that police vehicle stolen at the Mexico border?!), but it never prevents them from being funny. Largely dismissed and overlooked, this looks at first glance like the kind of middle-of-the-road effort so many filmmakers have fast-tracked to capitalize on their last big hit, especially given what proceeded it. That's an undeserved misconception however. Due Date held up incredibly well on this rewatch. The amusing concept leads to a lot of crazy scenarios that are adept at cracking you up. It's one of the more wild, riotous comedies I've seen that doesn't need to lean too heavily on sex humor to really push the envelope, just the dynamic of its two leads and the situation they're stuck in. Because of that it's a movie I think we should all give a collective second look.

2021年12月26日 评论 a review of 黑寡妇 - Takes me back to the early days of the MCU. Before there were massive crossovers, intergalactic threats, and now parallel universes. A time when it was just a single hero in a relatively grounded conflict that didn't leave earth or enter another plane of existence. Heck, the title character doesn't even have powers which gives the action a Jason Bourne or Mission Impossible vibe. It's also unconcerned with throwing a constant barrage of humor at the audience making this the most tonally serious superhero movie we've received since the last time a Zack Snyder work was released in theaters. Set not long after the events of Civil War , the plot sees Natasha Romanoff taking on a secret shadow organization with ties to her past. Not since Ant-Man and the Wasp has a Marvel flick been so self-contained and detached from moving the overall cinematic world it takes place in forward at all. As a result, it is totally skippable as you won't be missing anything in the grander story of the MCU should you choose not to watch it. Black Widow does still have value though in that it takes a hero who for years has sat alongside Hawkeye as the lamest, most out of place feeling member of The Avengers and actually provides a reason to give a crap about her. The emotional journey the former KGB agent goes on and the unique bond she shares with her supporting cast/family finally grants her a moment in the spotlight when in the past she's been little more than someone who was just sort of there and didn't really contribute much. Not every issue with the heroine has been fixed however. I've always felt Kevin Fiege and crew have played it a little loose with the character's abilities to make up for the lack of girl power present in the "Earth's Mightiest Heroes." I understand she's a highly trained and physically fit individual, but there's nothing here that says she's expressly any more resistant to damage than you or I so seeing her walk away from moments that should have killed or at the very least seriously injured a non-superhuman with hardly a scratch is egregiously unbelievable. That combined with the fact that some of the narrative's big reveals are incredibly predictable are what keep this from achieving perfection. Still, in an era when this franchise is focused on adapting the weirdest, wildest, and most grandiose chapters of its comic counterparts, it's nice to get something that hearkens back to the scale and scope of the first Iron Man while sporting an espionage thriller style that calls to mind The Winter Soldier . It's also the only time a director not named James Gunn has been able to make their distinctive presence felt in a MCU project. I would love to see Cate Shortland helm another entry maybe centered around Yelena Belova or, if my dreams come true, Red Guardian. So despite admittedly being a couple of films and a few miniseries behind, this is what currently has my vote as the best post- Endgame content to come out thus far.

2021年12月12日 评论 a review of 超能敢死队 - Only in attendance because my employers provided me, my family, and girlfriend with free tickets as part of an event to bring the company together outside of the workplace, I was unsure of what to expect going into this. All of the pre-release buzz made it clear even to somebody like me who didn't really follow it that this was made in an effort to restore the franchise to its former glory in the eyes of the fans who were angered by Paul Feig's admittedly mediocre 2016 reboot and provide a worthy continuation/successor to the original film they loved. An original film that at the time of this writing I still haven't seen yet. Because of my lack of prior exposure to the iconic '80s continuity I'm sure I missed a very big portion of what this movie was doing. I was also largely lost when it came to the plot and villain as the narrative is constantly referencing and forming connections to events I never witnessed. Perhaps this should have been called Ghostbusters: New Life though as despite my unaffiliated perspective its standalone content proved enough to thoroughly entertain me. I would gladly return for a sequel to spend more time with these characters portrayed by the likes of two of the biggest child stars currently working, the always charming Paul Rudd, and the extremely underrated actress Carrie Coon. That's because Jason Reitman manges to avoid pulling a J.J. Abrams by never leaning so hard into nostalgia pandering that the past outshines Afterlife 's present or potential future. Things play out exactly as you would expect them to with the cast stumbling onto the relics left behind by the old heroes before eventually taking up their fight against a returning force of evil. It works though because even in the face of all the homages and callbacks it's still THEIR story. The young protagonists carry the action entirely on their own. Yes, we do get appearances from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, but it occurs at the tail end of the running time to ensure that their presence never overshadows that of their successors. So all of the laughs, heartwarming moments, and exhilarating thrills come directly from the next generation of 'busters as opposed to the previous. Of course, nailing the torch passing element wouldn't have mattered if the adventure built around it wasn't any good. There are certainly some questionable aspects like the irritating loud shrieking noise that plays whenever the film tries to scare you or how nobody seems the slightest bit surprised when supernatural stuff starts occuring. Other than that though it's a hilarious blockbuster with a strong horror side (which I loved) that stars an instantly endearing group of eclectic oddballs that I can't wait to see again should this get the follow-up it deserves. I may not have been the target audience here due to coming in almost completely uninformed on the franchise outside of its lowest point, but that didn't stop me from having some of the most unexpected fun I've had all year. So while it was unable to charm me with its faithfulness to the tone, nature, and style of its predecessors the way it would a longtime member of the series' fanbase, it did manage to turn me into a new devotee.

2021年11月25日 评论 a review of 血船 - A beyond cleverly titled film that takes a compelling concept and makes it work on what appears to be a rather modest budget through a series of intelligent writing decisions and some solid vampiric action. By far the best thing this gets out of being set during World War II is that it's Allied Forces protagonists are a diverse bunch with a variety of different backgrounds and nationalities, which in turn leads to a lot of distinctive personalities. Instantly intriguing though they are, I'd be lying if I said they weren't a rather standard group of stock character archetypes so you can tell who the good ones are and who is going to suck right away. Still, the plot takes the time to ensure we get to know who they are and what makes them tick so that there's a real sense of loss when one of them bites (HA!) the dust. As for the monsters themselves, the movie pulls from the Romanian mythology of the Strigoi as opposed to the more modern interpretation of the creatures popularized by Bram Stoker's Dracula . This leads to them having more animalistic appearances that are brought to life by impressive prosthetic makeup effects given the scale of the project. In fact, the production quality as a whole is really good. You can see it isn't rocking Disney money or anything, but despite, or perhaps because of, taking place in such a small location the blood and other SFX look great. It's clear that co-writer/director Justin Dix and crew put in the necessary effort to develop this beyond just the cool core premise by doing things like fleshing out the cast so that you're actually somewhat interested in them, which is something we often catch grander works in the genre failing to do. They even borrowed a wider variety of powers/abilities from the folklore than what we typically get from vampire flicks, so the blood suckers have more creepy tricks on display than merely biting necks. All of which mean this has plenty going on for itself outside of the perfectly chosen name. Honestly, it stands as one of the best features on this particular type of the undead that I've watched to date. Serving as a fine example of what can be accomplished with a simple idea should the correct amount of care and attention to detail be placed into very basics that can bolster the strength of a picture to a far greater degree than they tend to receive credit for.
