2026年1月28日 评论 a review of 杰罗德游戏 - Mike Flanagan has become something of a proven name in the horror movie genre. This is less due to his ability to create real scares, and more based on how well he can come up with a compelling story that is backed up by strong characters, inventive scenarios, and unique concepts. So the prospect of him taking on adapting a Stephen King novel was rife with potential. I'm happy to say that he mostly delivered. Flanagan has brought the book to life in stunning fashion. For what it lacks in frights it more than makes up for in compelling drama that is bolstered by a fantastic lead performance from Carla Gugino. Less focused on supernatural torment, "Gerald's Game" is all about one woman's struggle with facing her past while literally being bound in one place with nowhere to go. While our protagonist must fight to survive her current predicament, she must also struggle with who she has become and face her inner demons, as was as possibly some outer ones too. The story is gripping and while it is backed by several great performances, it is Gugino who is left to do most of the heavy lifting as far as carrying the plot goes. Something she knocks out of the park in what may very well be a career defining performance. The complexity and depth of the material here elevates it to something more than just your average fright fest. Although, when all is said and done, I can't help but feel this adaptation could have been just a little bit better had it more of the energy of it's schlockier peers. The situation itself is great. Plenty of potential there. Most of which is capitalized on. It's also good at keeping you engaged in the action while keeping you just a bit on edge because of what may happen when the sun goes down. Unfortunately, for all it's creepy foreshadowing there really isn't anything going bump in the night. The horror here comes from the overall danger of the situation, as well as from the cruelty of human nature. All things I'm cool with, but at the same time I couldn't help but wish there was something in here that would have made me jump. Gerald's Game is a deep, meaningful horror flick with an intelligent story filled with strong themes. It's an absolute joy to watch Gugino's character face the inner demons of her past while fighting to survive in the present. The ending is a little goofy and there's nothing to make the skin crawl, but this is still an overall great movie and another win this year for Stephen King fans. Mike Flanagan's adaptation of the horror-meister's story might just be his best film thus far.

2018年4月29日 评论 a review of 疯狂婚礼周 - Adam Sandler's latest Netflix movie is a Father of the Bride style wedding flick that takes Happy Madison to some surprisingly more grounded territory. It's easily the best of his Netflix collaborations thus far and it's nice to see him trying something new without stepping away from his usual cohorts. Sandler plays a well-meaning father who just wants to do one last thing for his daughter by giving her the perfect wedding without any (desperately needed) outside help. The comedy stems from watching everything blow up in his face. It's pretty slow-paced. There are plenty of smaller moments dedicated to just watching the bride-to-be's Jewish family yell at each other. It kind of gives the movie an indie-comedy vibe not unlike that of the recent and critically acclaimed film The Meyerowitz Stories which Sandler also had a starring role in. The Week Of feels much lazier though and is quite frankly overly long. Chris Rock's character also doesn't have much to do outside of rolling his eyes at all of the chaos when his requests to help pay for things are repeatedly rejected. Those hoping for a duo comedy are going to be left wanting. This is a Sandler vehicle all the way through. While there are stretches where the laughs are too few, I still found myself regularly amused. It's a pretty good concept comedy with plenty of funny moments. It's the sweetness that ultimately won me over though. It carries none of the mean-spiritedness so many often associate with Sandler/Happy Madison films. Things end on a very touching note with some genuine emotion stemming from the bond between a father and daughter, showing just how hard it can be to let your kids go. The Week Of is a bit refreshing in that it shows the actor's willingness to try something different, although it doesn't stand out as one of his best movies. It is however one of his warmest. Vibes of family and love run throughout, and everyone gets a happy ending.

2018年4月7日 评论 a review of 游戏结束,老兄! - Did the guys behind Workaholics just try to make their own Keanu? This movie is completely tasteless, but mindlessly entertaining because of just how far it's willing to go for laughs. It's essentially a Die Hard parody that goes out of it's way to push the boundaries of it's R-rating. This overreliance on shock value brings down the experience though as it's the smaller gags that are the funniest. Every penis, f-bomb, celebrity death, and graphic display of booty eating feels unnecessary. As if the writers went through a checklist of every R-rated comedy trope and then decided to add their own layer of nastiness to the mix. The repetition is it's biggest downfall though as the same few jokes are repeated again and again. On top of being one of the most graphically vulgar movies I've ever seen, it also ranks among the most mean-spirited. The protagonists are unlikable people. Adam DeVine is known for play self-centered psychopaths that are only made tolerable by the fact that those around him are at least slightly better people. Not here though. Everybody is trash so there's nothing to offset the awfulness. Considering that DeVine gets most of the attention that was a pretty big oversight. Did I mention that the movie is also brainless? The dumbest of plots holds this thing together. Why do movies like this often rely on the most outlandish of concepts? The whole idea of their video game is painful. It should have been scrapped for something at least remotely believable. I can't say it's all bad though. It did manage to keep me watching to the end after all. I was weirdly entranced by it's sheer stupidity and excessive filthiness. Sometimes even to the point of amusement. Plus the three leads do have some charisma as evident by the fact that they were able to keep a show going on Comedy Central for seven seasons. I can't entirely recommend it, but just know that if you liked Workaholics there's a pretty high chance you'll find some value here as well. It never managed to ascend beyond anything above merely watchable for me personally as it is comprised of some of the genres biggest flaws, but there's something to be said for the brazen audacity of it all.

2018年3月9日 评论 a review of 外来者 - Right from the opening credits The Outsider feels like one of Netflix's Marvel series condensed down to a two hour running-time with all of the interesting stuff having been cut out. There are a lot of filler shots and the narrative feels fragmented. At one point I actually had to check to make sure I hadn't accidentally skipped ahead because I had no idea why Jared Leto's face suddenly looked all beat up. Apparently there was just a time jump. The sporadic, bloody violence and beautiful Japanese scenery is all the movie has to keep it going. Speaking of Leto, his whiteness is a legitimate problem. He looks so out of place and it doesn't make much sense why all but one of the Yakuza members he finds himself around would embrace him so openly. His character's race and background also contribute nothing to the plot. He is only here to act as a gateway to open up American audiences to the material. Skin color aside, Leto also feels miscast. His role in the Yakuza is that of an enforcer. The guy they call to rough people up. While he may be a secret bad ass in real life, the actor/singer doesn't have any sort of threatening appearance. It makes the whole white boy lead thing feel even more misguided. We could use more Asian culture in western cinema. While I appreciate The Outsider's efforts to make that happen, it's just not the movie that was going to make it work in the first place, and not just because of it's ill-advised main character. This really would have been better of as a show on Netflix as opposed to an original film. The material could have had some time to breath, a fully developed plot could have emerged, and some character growth could have occurred that may have even justified an American protagonist. I could see The Outsider as a show succeeding in all of the areas where Iron Fist failed. But instead we get an empty crime-drama that's only redeeming factors rest in it's depiction of Japanese culture. Something it squanders a bit by mostly using it as window dressing and letting the white man prance around like he owns that place.

2017年12月22日 评论 a review of 光灵 - A gritty buddy cop movie infused with the might and magic of the fantasy genre. Viewers are introduced to a world where humans exist alongside mythological creatures, magic, and races of beings straight from a Tolkien story in a modern day setting. The film finds strong leads in Will Smith and Joel Edgerton who play a human and the city's first orc cop respectively. Bright relies on the interspecies tension in the story to provide a surprisingly poignant critique of the current state of race relations. It gives the movie a little more depth than one might expect from such an odd concept. Mix that with David Ayer's strong direction, and you've gone one heck of an action-flick that manages to stand strong in the face of some plotting issues. The moment to moment action is fine. Reluctant partners Smith and Edgerton respond to a call that causes their night to spin wildly out of control when a powerful magical item is found on the scene. On top of being the center of a quest to resurrect a dark lord, there are also those who seek to use it for their own gain. As a result our leads find themselves hunted and on the run with no one to trust. That stuff is fine. The holes start appearing when you take a look at the larger scope of the world. The lore is sadly underdeveloped. There's talk of the characters being apart of some prophecy, but literally no insight as to what that prophecy says. The anti-orc sentiment that serves as the gateway to the movie's parable about racism is barely touched upon. Apparently there was some centuries old conflict that took place and the orcs picked the wrong side and now everybody hates them. Elves are somehow are at the top of the food chain, there are other factions existing in the world, and it apparently all ties into the main plot about the return of the dark lord. It's to kind of keep that stuff in the background I guess, but it still could have used some more fleshing out and needs to be in that sequel Netflix already ordered. It doesn't help that the few times it is brought up, there are a few plot holes. Bright still manages to entertain in spite of these storytelling woes due to the likability of it's leads. Will Smith might just be playing Will Smith once again, but his charm is still present as he always nails the wiseass characters. Edgerton steals the show as the well-meaning orc who just wants to be useful and find his place somewhere in life. The dialog is sharp and winning. Particularly during the funny parts. The action is brutal and satisfying. The shootouts are tense. The Suicide Squad director shows once again that he knows how to craft a fight sequence with or without guns, and even with some magic on the side. So overall I would this $90 million well-spent on Netflix's part. This is officially their most expensive film to date and I hope it works out for them. There's an originality applied to the standard cop movie tropes that makes for one highly entertaining movie. There's a lot of fun to be had here and I'm ready for the sequel.
