まさに、彼らの第２章がここからはじまる。
1stアルバム『D.A.N.』をリリース後、破竹の勢いでその名前を広めたD.A.N.。ついにここに2ndアルバム『Sonatine』（もともとは小規模のソナタを指す、イタリア語語源の音楽用語）が届いた。メランコリックなメロディ、インディR&B～クラウトロックにまたがるグルーヴ、そしてポストロック、テクノやダブの音響感覚が結びつきながらも、“ロック”としてのダイナミズムも残し、この国のインディ・シーンの奇跡的に特異点となった2016年の1st album『D.A.N.』。そして、ハウス、アフロビート～トロピカル・リズムへの探求と、彼らのポップスとしての意志とともに絶妙なバランス感覚でダンス・ロックを作り上げたミニ・アルバム『Tempest』。さらには、OGRE YOU ASSHOLEとの2マン・ツアーやフジロック・フェスをはじめとする様々なフェス、さらにはUKでのライヴ、そしてなによりもワンマンツアーと、回を重ねるたびにバンドとしての底力を確かな形で身につけ、そしてそのスケール感を拡大させていった数々のライヴ。
ここには、こうした月日をひとつの土台に新たな航路を目指して旅立つような、３人による新たな9つの作品が並んでいる。市川仁也(Ba)と川上輝(Dr)による新たなリズムへの探求、そして櫻木大悟(Gt,Vo,Syn)の表現力をさらに豊かにしたファルセット・ヴォーカルとリリックが新たなヴィジョンを描いていく。トリップの入り口となるようなイントロ「Start」、きらめくシンセのトーン、そして畳み掛ける後半のコズミックなトランス感がキラーな先行シングル「Chance」で本アルバムは幕開けとなる。アーサー・ラッセルのロウなエクスペリメンタル・ディスコを想起させるグルーヴィーな「Sundance」は、陶酔するディープ・ハウスの所作をものにしてみせたことをクールに示す。ベース・ミュージック～IDMのグルーヴや音色を彼らなりに昇華してみせたインスト「Cyberphunk」、そして続くはミュージック・コンクレートなインターバル「Debris」とアルバムは進んで行く。こうした楽曲たちはバンドとして彼らが新たな表現を見につけたことを端的に物語るサウンドだ。そしてアルバム後半、「Pendulum」は、ミニマルなフレーズに絡め取られる、その歌詞は前作の「Curtain」を想起させるSF的なモチーフが巡るコズミック・ブルース。先行シングルとして「Chance」とともにリリースされたアンビエントR&B「Replica」。コズミックなステッパーでグルーヴィーに進むリズム隊、そしてドラマチックに展開していくヴォーカルとシンセがフィールドを駆け巡る「Borderland」。その高揚感は、本アルバム後半のクライマックスのひとつと言えるだろう。まさに彼らの真骨頂とも言えるメロウ＆チルアウト、そして美しくもメランコリックな情景を描くリリック、R&Bトラック「Orange」で本アルバムは閉じる。
ある意味で３人のバンドとしての表現力をストレートに拡大させたサウンドを効かせている。またひとつスケール感、そして次なる次元へと踏み込んだD.A.N.の新作。その先の道も、そこに死角はなさそうだ。

"It's the name of the record because when I was growing up we had this big crow in our garden. It was in a tree there for about 12 years, and we called that crow "Balthus." They’re a symbol for death and darkness in olden times and maybe more recently they’re a symbol for melancholy and loss. I thought it would be nice to have an abstract name for the record….it feels like a ‘crow’ record to me! It’s a bit lonely and sad, you know?”

Recorded at Pieater’s BellBird studio in Melbourne, the album came together over a three-year period, mostly in Melbourne, but pieces sketched all over. It was entirely written, recorded, produced and mixed by Tom Snowdon and Tom Iansek.
No Mono and the pair’s debut record, "Islands part 1", is the culmination of years of songwriting and performances and draws broad influence, including from Snowdon's upbringing in the remote desert town of Alice Springs and his relationship to central Australia. It also oozes Tom Iansek's boundary-pushing production.
Like the band's name, which is derived from the Japanese expression 'Mono No Aware', No Mono's music explores/inspired by the emotional and otherwordly. "Islands part 1" is a record about transition through crisis and sanctuary. The band goes deeper, "The songs are all about the turbulence of loss and change and the transformative power that accompanies these moments. They tell our personal stories and reflect our shared fascination in the power of the unseen, and in the enjoyment of making music and songs together; ultimately, the thread that inspired this project.”
