Hay discos que sobreviven al tiempo. Otros desaparecen entre colecciones privadas, archivos olvidados y copias imposibles de encontrar. Melao y Guaguancó de Sexteto Tropical pertenece a esa segunda categoría: un álbum venezolano de culto, editado originalmente en formato LP por el sello Discos Efi y convertido con los años en una pieza prácticamente inalcanzable para coleccionistas y amantes de la música tropical latinoamericana.



Ahora, décadas después de su publicación original, El Palmas Music presenta la reedición digital de este trabajo fundamental, devolviendo a circulación una grabación cargada de guaguancó, boogaloo, guaracha, bolero y descarga tropical.



Con una sonoridad profundamente ligada a la efervescencia musical venezolana de finales de los años 60 y comienzos de los 70, Melao y Guaguancó captura un momento donde las influencias cubanas, el espíritu del Caribe y la identidad local se mezclaban de forma orgánica y explosiva. El álbum navega entre la elegancia del bolero y la energía del guaguancó, pasando por boogaloos crudos, descargas llenas de percusión y canciones marcadas por una sensibilidad callejera y bailable.



Temas como Melao y Guaguancó, Guaguancó Homelengo, Sexteto Boogaloo o Descarga Tropical reflejan el carácter vibrante y experimental de una agrupación que, pese a haber quedado fuera de los grandes relatos oficiales de la salsa y la música tropical, desarrolló un sonido propio y profundamente auténtico.



La reedición también pone nuevamente en valor el trabajo de músicos como Luis Rada, Gilberto Rodríguez, Armando Flores, Manuel Bolívar y las voces de Corsario Nieves y Coco Ortega, responsables de una grabación que hoy suena tan viva y urgente como en el momento de su creación.



Con este lanzamiento, El Palmas Music continúa su labor de rescate y preservación de la memoria musical venezolana y latinoamericana, recuperando discos olvidados y acercándolos a nuevas generaciones de oyentes, DJs y coleccionistas alrededor del mundo.

Sexteto Tropical Revives a Lost Gem of Venezuelan Tropical Music



Some records survive the passage of time. Others disappear into private collections, forgotten archives, and nearly impossible-to-find copies. Melao y Guaguancó by Sexteto Tropical belongs to the latter: a cult Venezuelan LP originally released on Discos Efi, which over the years became an almost unreachable piece for collectors and lovers of Latin American tropical music.



Now, decades after its original release, El Palmas Music presents the digital reissue of this essential recording, bringing back into circulation a body of work filled with guaguancó, boogaloo, guaracha, bolero, and raw tropical descarga sessions.



Deeply connected to the musical explosion that shaped Venezuela during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Melao y Guaguancó captures a moment when Cuban influences, Caribbean spirit, and local identity blended together in a natural and explosive way. The album moves effortlessly between elegant boleros and energetic guaguancós, while also embracing gritty boogaloos, percussion-driven descargas, and songs marked by a vibrant streetwise sensibility.

The need to slow down and reverse the constant stimuli to which we are subjected is a principle that accompanies ALCRUD3. From scarce resources and admittedly archaic methods, this auditory orientation is born — conceived primarily to guide the author himself more than the listener. The journey is built from a disoriented beginning to a fulfilled conclusion, as if the guide were seeking to answer himself along the way.



Throughout this path, different musical genres are explored without the intention of fixing or labeling them, moving through them intuitively. Errors, detours, and wanderings cease to be obstacles and become an essential part of the journey, shaping a sonic narrative that values the process above any destination.

I remember the blizzard that year fondly; watching the brightly colored list of school closings; snow practically as tall as me covering the ground; and though it only lasted a few days, in my memories it seemed like it lasted the whole winter. No snowstorm since has ever compared to the blizzard of 96. Measuring it in inches doesn’t do it justice, you can’t quantify the excitement and happiness a storm like this brings to a child.



There were no worries about shoveling out your car or missed days of work. Your only concerns were building snowmen, digging snow forts, and imagining Antarctic adventures. When you had finally soaked through your boots and two layers of socks you could retreat inside to a warm cup of cocoa and video games. No winter since has brought me that kind of joy.



As a whole, the year 1996 signifies to me a dividing point between childhood simplicity and a loss of innocence. Things got very complicated and hectic after this; my parents divorced, we moved several times, friends were made, and quickly lost. Life finally became some what stable again about two years later, but things had changed and could never be as they once were.



For years after this, I would hope for another snowstorm of that magnitude. It never happened, and eventually snow became less fun and more of a hassle. This blizzard was once in a lifetime and everything preceding it is lifetime away.
