Through window displays, newspapers, soap operas, gay bars, and other public culture venues, Chinese citizens are negotiating what it means to be cosmopolitan citizens of the world, with appropriate needs, aspirations, and longings. Lisa Rofel argues that the creation of such “desiring subjects” is at the core of China’s contingent, piece-by-piece reconfiguration of its relationship to a post-socialist world. In a study at once ethnographic, historical, and theoretical, she contends that neoliberal subjectivities are created through the production of various desires—material, sexual, and affective—and that it is largely through their engagements with public culture that people in China are imagining and practicing appropriate desires for the post-Mao era.Drawing on her research over the past two decades among urban residents and rural migrants in Hangzhou and Beijing, Rofel analyzes the meanings that individuals attach to various public cultural phenomena and what their interpretations say about their understandings of post-socialist China and their roles within it. She locates the first broad-based public debate about post-Mao social changes in the passionate dialogues about the popular 1991 television soap opera Yearnings. She describes how the emergence of gay identities and practices in China reveals connections to a transnational network of lesbians and gay men at the same time that it brings urban/rural and class divisions to the fore. The 1999–2001 negotiations over China’s entry into the World Trade Organization; a controversial women’s museum; the ways that young single women portray their longings in relation to the privations they imagine their mothers experienced; adjudications of the limits of self-interest in court cases related to homoerotic desire, intellectual property, and consumer fraud—Rofel reveals all of these as sites where desiring subjects come into being.

本书尽管论述的是日本女性的地位问题,但其观点在相当大程度上适用于当下中国的国情。因而对于任何思考女性地位与男女平等问题的人都有着莫大的启发。

1966年发表的《词与物——人文知识的考古学》(Les Mots et les Choses. Une archéologie des sciences humaines,英译《事物与秩序》The Order of Things),更是被认为是结构主义时代取代存在主义时代的重要标志。它主要的论点在于:认为每个历史阶段都有一套异于前期的知识形构规则,而现代知识型的特征则是以 “人”作为研究的中心。这本书的问世使福柯成为一位知名的法国知识分子,但也因为“人之死”的结论而饱受批评。让·保罗·萨特就曾基于此点批判此书为小资产阶级的最后壁垒。

It traces the interactions between nation branding and counterfeit culture, two manifestations of the globalizing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) regime that give rise to competing visions for the nation. Nation branding is a state-sanctioned policy, captured by the slogan “From Made in China to Created in China,” which aims to transform China from a manufacturer of foreign goods into a nation that creates its own IPR-eligible brands. Counterfeit culture is the transnational making, selling, and buying of unauthorized products. This cultural dilemma of the postsocialist state demonstrates the unequal relations of power that persist in contemporary globalization.

In Hegemonic Mimicry, Kyung Hyun Kim considers the recent global success of Korean popular culture—the Korean wave of pop music, cinema, and television, which is also known as hallyu—from a transnational and transcultural perspective. Using the concept of mimicry to think through hallyu's adaptation of American sensibilities and genres, he shows how the commercialization of Korean popular culture has upended the familiar dynamic of major-to-minor cultural influence, enabling hallyu to become a dominant global cultural phenomenon. At the same time, its worldwide popularity has rendered its Koreanness opaque. Kim argues that Korean cultural subjectivity over the past two decades is one steeped in ethnic rather than national identity. Explaining how South Korea leaped over the linguistic and cultural walls surrounding a supposedly “minor” culture to achieve global ascendance, Kim positions K-pop, Korean cinema and television serials, and even electronics as transformative acts of reappropriation that have created a hegemonic global ethnic identity.

Judith Halberstam proposes "low theory" as a means of recovering ways of being and forms of knowledge not legitimized by existing systems and institutions. Low theory is derived from eccentric archives. It runs the risk of not being taken seriously. It entails a willingness to fail and to lose one's way. Tacking back and forth between high theory and low theory, high culture and low culture, Halberstam looks for the unexpected and subversive in popular culture, avant-garde performance, and queer art. She pays particular attention to animated children's films, contending that new forms of animation, especially CGI, have generated narratives filled with unexpected encounters between the childish, the transformative, and the queer. Dismantling contemporary logics of success, Halberstam demonstrates that failure sometimes offers more creative, cooperative, and surprising ways of being in the world.

Embodied Reckonings examines the political and cultural aspects of contemporary performances that have grappled with the history of the “comfort women,” the Japanese military’s euphemism for the sexual enslavement of girls and young women—mostly Korean—in the years before and during World War II. Long silent, in the early 1990s these women and their supporters initiated varied performance practices—protests, tribunals, theater, and memorial-building projects—to demand justice for those affected by state-sponsored acts of violence. The book provides a critical framework for understanding how actions designed to bring about redress can move from the political and legal aspects of this concept to its cultural and social possibilities.
Based on extensive archival and ethnographic research, the study argues for the central role of performance in how Korean survivors, activists, and artists have redressed the histories—and erasures—of this sexual violence. Merging cultural studies and performance theory with a transnational, feminist analysis, the book illuminates the actions of ordinary people, thus offering ways of reconceptualizing legal and political understandings of redress that tend to concentrate on institutionalized forms of state-based remediation.

首次了解到韩国几十年来的慰安妇反抗史,如此令人钦佩和感动,更感叹任何权利和正义的争取都来之不易。
历史之外,这本书最打动我的是它对performance theory的运用,让我看到了这一方法论工具的有效性。年迈的受害者,如何在几十年的沉默后站出来抗争,既疗愈国家的、也是疗愈自己的创伤。而追寻正义的抗争,也因此由质问日本,转换成为保留历史、建立community共同体。在七百多次的星期三抗议中,受害者由原本的哀恸叙事、披麻戴孝,变成了更为积极阳光的叙事,身着明黄色的衣服——伤痛因为重复性的讲述,而得以脱敏、减弱、乃至疗愈。尽管疗愈永远都是不完全的。
个人和国家的关系,在这里达到了微妙的平衡。
而儒家伦理在这里扮演的双重角色:性羞辱和对老年人的尊重,也发挥了奇妙的作用。

Although the era of European colonialism has long passed, misgivings about the inequality of the encounters between European and non-European languages persist in many parts of the postcolonial world. This unfinished state of affairs, this lingering historical experience of being caught among unequal languages, is the subject of Rey Chow's book. A diverse group of personae, never before assembled in a similar manner, make their appearances in the various chapters: the young mulatto happening upon a photograph about skin color in a popular magazine; the man from Martinique hearing himself named "Negro" in public in France; call center agents in India trained to Americanize their accents while speaking with customers; the Algerian Jewish philosopher reflecting on his relation to the French language; African intellectuals debating the pros and cons of using English for purposes of creative writing; the translator acting by turns as a traitor and as a mourner in the course of cross-cultural exchange; Cantonese-speaking writers of Chinese contemplating the politics of food consumption; radio drama workers straddling the forms of traditional storytelling and mediatized sound broadcast.
In these riveting scenes of speaking and writing imbricated with race, pigmentation, and class demarcations, Chow suggests, postcolonial languaging becomes, de facto, an order of biopolitics. The native speaker, the fulcrum figure often accorded a transcendent status, is realigned here as the repository of illusory linguistic origins and unities. By inserting British and post-British Hong Kong (the city where she grew up) into the languaging controversies that tend to be pursued in Francophone (and occasionally Anglophone) deliberations, and by sketching the fraught situations faced by those coping with the specifics of using Chinese while negotiating with English, Chow not only redefines the geopolitical boundaries of postcolonial inquiry but also demonstrates how such inquiry must articulate historical experience to the habits, practices, affects, and imaginaries based in sounds and scripts.

暂时告一段落吧,后面的先不看了。/本以为周老师要控诉殖民记忆中的创伤部分,但她却是由此延伸开去,寻找治疗的可能性,把创伤轻轻地放下和化解了。这是无比的智慧和温柔,是这本书最动人的部分。她不仅教会我们要珍惜和体察个人的生活经历,也教会我们如何运用理论的智慧去思辨这种经历,进而从创伤中得到解放。理论的聪颖和情感的细腻敏锐,在此融合得浑然天成,坚定自在而不见锋芒。这可能才是了不起的批评者,值得终生学习的榜样。

感觉两个译者差距比较大,比如第一二章大概就出自不同手笔。总体还算是译本里比较准确、认真、流畅的了。看了英文本就知道翻译过来不容易。

主要是看了视频课,借着标一下吧。作为国内符号学的重要奠基者和推动人,赵老师的好处就是讲解非常通俗易懂,例子多且生动,很多关于中国传统文化的例子,可以说明他对符号学的理解之深,更可以说明符号学应用的广泛。不过相关的内容主要是前几年看的,如今回看,感觉有些已经比较浅了。惊艳之感渐淡。但是,想到赵老师一生都在推动符号学在中国的传播,实在非常佩服。

She shows how the earlier avant-garde literary experiments with alphabetical writing and the word-association games of psychoanalysis contributed to the mathematical making of digital media. 为了赵元任,只读了他出现的两章加绪论。刘禾讨论赵更多是因为他的文章出现在《控制论》的文集中。但是赵这一部分应该可以继续拓展下去。
慢慢读真能感觉到这是一本很好的书,但是仍然不能完全读懂,很多地方像是科技理论史的梳理了——而这也让我进一步想要了解中国科技史的翻译问题了。Shannon、Turing、控制论、Lacan、Freud……这些放在一起讨论真的很有意思,但是好多背景和理论知识需要补补才行。

五四的啟蒙理性論述向來為研究主流,《唯情與理性的辯證》以五四反啟蒙論述為主軸,探討五四唯情論與啟蒙理性主義的辯證,開拓了一個嶄新的視野。本書從跨文化研究的角度追溯人生觀論述的歐亞連結脈絡,展現人生觀派發動的唯情論及情感啟蒙論述,上承歐洲啟蒙時期的情感論述,下接1960年代以來德勒茲發展的情動力概念以及李澤厚的「情本體」論。全書研究以唯情與理性的辯證,重新定義五四的知識論體系(episteme)。歷來主流論述以「全盤西化」、「拿來主義」描述五四一代,本書爬梳一般忽略的文獻資料,顯示五四知識分子在知識論上的跨文化串連,連通古今中西,打破了傳統/現代、中國/西方的二元論。重新認識五四知識界的唯情與理性辯證,目的是使現有的五四啟蒙理性論述複雜化,開展五四唯情論及情感啟蒙論述的知識論可能,更彰顯人生觀派知識分子與二戰前後新儒家興起的關聯。
《唯情與理性的辯證》顯示,唯情論與啟蒙理性的辯證共同構成了五四精神的真髓。本書所謂情感啟蒙,不僅牽涉到心理學或神經科學上的情感,更是五四唯情論所主張的唯情,牽涉到我與非我、主體與客體的相互關係,與西方的情動力是相通的;唯情論認為「情」是道德觀、人倫觀、社會觀、政治觀、國家觀、宇宙觀的關鍵。
《唯情與理性的辯證》共分六章,第一章〈「人生觀」與歐亞反啟蒙論述〉強調「人生觀」一詞作為跨文化語彙的重要性,掀起了五四時期的唯情與理性的辯證。第二章〈張東蓀《創化論》的翻譯──科學理性與「心」〉討論《創化論》的翻譯,使得「創造」、「直覺」、「綿延」等跨文化語彙,成為現代中國的日常用語,「創造社」的成立是最佳例子。哲學思想與文學的相互印證,是一個尚待開發的領域。本章結尾以徐復觀為例,探討戰後新儒家與人生觀論述的連結。第三章是〈梁漱溟的《東西文化及其哲學》〉。第四章是〈蔡元培美育運動的情感啟蒙──跨文化觀點〉。第五章〈朱謙之與袁家驊的「唯情論」──直覺與理智〉,也論及杜威的「自然主義形而上學」,說明杜威的經驗主義目的在主張「可驗證」的形上學。第六章〈方東美的《科學哲學與人生》──科哲合作,理情交得〉除討論五四期間有關方東美的中西方哲學、文學、藝術的嫻熟修養,也探討人生哲學在五四時代及其後的影響,其中最為重要的是無名氏六卷本的史詩式小說《無名書》(寫作於1945-1960)。
