Recorded during time spent in upstate New York with Dave Fridmann, the five songs that make up A Fine Mess gradually emerged as a body of work with a narrative and flow unto itself. The title track, and BBC 6 Music-playlisted single ‘Fine Mess’, then received further production from Kaines & Tom A.D. and mixing from Claudius Mittendorfer, who had first worked with Interpol as engineer on 'Our Love To Admire'. The resulting set is a living, breathing postcard from the band to their fans as they tour the world throughout 2019, and a linear continuation of the visceral and contagious energy set loose with 'Marauder'.
Echoing its title, the artwork for 'A Fine Mess' is illustrated by a series of lost images, recovered from an abandoned police station in Detroit, MI. In a crumbling evidence room - amongst the rubble - an undeveloped roll of film, dated “1-20-96”, featured latent images of a breaking and entering scene, the rooms in chaos.
From the beguiling refrain of the title track, to the soulful topsy-turvy of ‘No Big Deal’, cathartic chorus of long sought-after live favourite ‘Real Life’, anthemic swell of ‘The Weekend’, and angular shades of ‘Thrones’, A Fine Mess is a bracing and distinct entry in Interpol’s oeuvre.

去年夏天，Interpol的主唱兼结他手Paul Banks才化名为Julian Plenti出版过他的首张个人专辑《Julian Plenti is....Skyscraper》。想不到只有一年之隔，大家便重返Interpol的岗位，带来继2007年《Our Love To Admire》后三年来的全新专辑。作为睽违三载的新作，乐团的第四张专辑就只是简单地唤作《Interpol》。

El Pintor is the fifth studio album by American rock band Interpol. It will be released on September 8, 2014 internationally and on September 9, 2014 in North America, through Matador Records. Self-produced by the band and recorded at Electric Lady Studios and Atomic Sound in New York City, the album was engineered by James Brown, who is known for his work for Foo Fighters, and mixed by Alan Moulder, who is known for his production and mixing work for My Bloody Valentine, The Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails.
The album title, which means "the painter" in Spanish, is an anagram of Interpol. It is the band's first album without bassist Carlos Dengler, who departed the band after the release of the band's eponymous album in 2010. The bass duties on the album were taken over by frontman Paul Banks. The album features guest appearances by Brandon Curtis of Secret Machines, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. and Rob Moose of Bon Iver. The band will be embarking a summer tour in accompaniment with the album.

事实上自从首张专辑发行后，Interpol直到第二张专辑巡回演出结束后，才得以挪出时间好好休息养声。乐团利用这段期间静下心来，回顾检视这几年窜红的历程，2006年初他们决心将一切化整为零，团员首度齐聚位于曼哈顿的录音室，在乐迷三年漫长的等待之后，Interpol转投新东家，发表第三张彷若新生的录音室作品《Our Love To Admire》。虽然乐队的制作功力有目共赌，此次他们特别礼聘一线制作人Rich Costey(Franz Ferdinand, Muse, Mars Volta)共同合作监制，打造出更胜往昔的崭新样貌。〈Mammoth〉魅惑动人的指数堪称首见；〈Pace Is the Trick〉高潮迭起的编曲，他们一如往昔游刃有余；歌词意境精准绝妙的〈Rest My Chemistry〉亦是碟内惊喜；〈The Lighthouse〉有如一首哀凄恸绝的挽歌，放在专辑结尾却有如对乐队重生的礼赞。

1998年,當時於紐約大學攻讀哲學的carlos dengler,為著連結同學間的友誼,便拉攏了懂得彈吉他的daniel kessler和打鼓的greg drudy組織樂隊,初時只是抱著嘗試心態學習吉他的carlos,明白到要全心專注才有成效的重要性,便潛心鑽研較適合自己的貝斯和鍵琴,剛巧,給daniel遇上剛從法國遊歷回來的paul banks,便引荐他成為了樂隊的主音位置,樂隊從此成型,取名為interpol(國際警察組織)。
經過兩年的閉門修練,到了2000年初,他們展開其首次演出,這時greg卻與隊員在創作上產生分歧,決然離隊,不久,鼓手空缺便由曾任職唱片店的sam Fogarino頂上,而sam那狠勁的朋克擊鼓,亦為樂隊注入更強大的節奏能量。
就此,paul(主唱,吉他),daniel(吉他),carlos(貝斯),sam(鼓),這四人構成了interpol這個固定陣營
反攻英倫
樂隊開始時,只是在紐約本土一帶的酒吧舉行演出,後來daniel認識到蘇格蘭樂隊the delgados主唱emma pollock,藉以他便送上一盒樂隊的demo給emma,emma聽後大為欣賞,便為interpol在自己主理的chemikal underground廠牌出版一張限量發行的FukdlD ep。同時,曾為oasis,mogwai,coldplay在未成名時出版過唱片的英國獨立廠牌亦看中了interpol,找他們參與clooney
tunes這張七吋細碟合輯。
近年美國湧顯了一批沾有英倫搖滾氣息的樂隊,包括black rebel motorcycle club,the strokes,the faint,radio 4,the rapture等,勻得到英國的音樂傳媒,尤其是最喜歡製造潮流的NME音樂週報的大肆吹捧,成形一股美國新勢力入侵現象,但相反在美國本土卻未必受注目。無獨有偶地,因為在英國先行試探市場出版唱片的interpol,可算遇正這片風向,亦開始引起當地的的關注,有英國音樂教父之稱的john peel,在2001年更邀請他們出席BBC電台節目表演。
雖然樂隊有出版唱片的機會,又在彼幫打開知名度,但由於仍然未有合適的唱片合約,於是便決定回歸美國自資推出同名的四曲ep,結果在2002年得到美國獨立名廠matador的垂青,成為該旗下藝人之一。
模仿者之死
若將interpol介定為joy division的模仿者,未免有點低估了他們,雖然同樣是post punk樂風,paul那把略帶沉厚而苦澀的唱腔,也難免讓人聯想到ian
curtis,然而daniel一手充滿空間感的吉他彈奏,比起joy division粗糙的音質卻細緻得多,還有甚欣賞貝斯手carlos那穩健的低音旋律(他彈bass時實在太酷了!),往往能從daniel所建築的音牆及sam緊密的鼓擊中於歇息間突圍而出。
後朋血液
從2002年首張專輯turn on the bright lights裡,亦反映出這隊美國樂隊如何吸納著精良的英國後朋克血液,歌曲PDA和stella was a diver and she was always down便如曼城the chameleons樂團那種吉他在環繞前進,節奏在疾走飛馳的速度感,ep主打作又像placebo般的尖刺沖擊力中帶著適度的echo吉他音效。
不過於我而言,更喜歡碟內幾首慢版作品,感覺也是最不似joy divison的風格,the new和leif erikson中苦惱的蒼白無力感是post punk最無病呻吟的自憐時刻,尤其獨愛另一ep作品NYC,雖然歌詞描寫的是有關人際關係,但從歌名到MV內集體上戰機的畫面,是受害者還是施暴者,對911的反思,可謂不言而喻。這是我聽過眾多後911事件悼念歌曲之中,個人認為最惹人愁緒的一首作品,曲中充滿空曠感的音效處理,營造出讓人如置身空無一人,滿目瘡痍的廢墟之中,當後段到了扣人心弦的結他鳴奏響起時,像將一切傷痛懊悔推向極點。

Interpol是一支摇滚乐队。一支成功从独立走向主流的纽约朋克乐队。首张专辑已成为新世纪头十年独立流行乐界的代表作。
