On the occasion of the death of its beloved Kansas-born editor Arthur Howitzer, Jr., the staff of The French Dispatch, a widely circulated American magazine based in the French city of Ennui-sur-Blasé, convenes to write his obituary. Memories of Howitzer flow into the creation of four stories: a travelogue of the seediest sections of the city itself from The Cycling Reporter; “The Concrete Masterpiece,” about a criminally insane painter, his guard and muse, and his ravenous dealers; “Revisions to a Manifesto,” a chronicle of love and death on the barricades at the height of student revolt; and “The Private Dining Room of the Police Commissioner,” a suspenseful tale of drugs, kidnapping and fine dining.

某方面，我認為這張電影原聲帶無疑提供了林生祥、早川徹、大竹研一個冒險的舞台，各自玩了自己很想嘗試，卻無法在生祥樂隊的專輯概念中實現的多元曲風融合。另一方面，天方爵士鼓手葉子帶來的刺激，也是讓林生祥、早川徹、大竹研這對老搭檔激發出新意新象的另一亮點。
《大佛普拉斯》整張專輯是在麗風錄音室，由徐玉光師錄製，混音與母帶後期則由與生祥長年合作的Wolfgang Obrecht操刀。先前我就已盛讚這張專輯的錄製水準極高，質地、音色、音質、音場、動態、分離度都已臻頂級錄音作品之境。為何這張作品可以錄製得那麼好，關鍵在於各樂手錄音當下，作曲人暨製作人林生祥便很確定每一樣配器的音色、呼吸、句法的抑揚頓挫與形體比例該當何是，才能符合全曲所需。而每一位樂手的演奏功力之高，也都能恰到好處，恰如其分地錄到那個接近最終成品的水準。據悉，負責混音的Wolfgang 幾乎沒有對各配器音軌作過多修飾與後天處理，全部套在一起的粗剪混音就已非常和諧平衡，精彩動人。如果說錄音、混音、後製的每一項處理，包括增益，嚴格說來都是對原音原色原訊源的「減法」，而非「加法」，當事後修補的越少，整張專輯聽來當然就更至真，至善，至美，甚至更無數位感了。

Attack of the Clones was an exciting film for me to make because it explores new territory in the world of Star Wars. It was only fitting that the music for the film also explores new ground. The galaxy is becoming a very dangerous place, the Republic is being torn apart, and the Jedi find themselves faced with mysteries and challenges greater than any they have ever known. To complement the complexities of the film's story, John Williams had to create a score that truly expanded the musical palate of Star Wars. As always, he has more than risen to the occasion. His score takes us deep into the urban landscape of Coruscant with rich percussion. He complements the adventures on Geonosis with music that evokes the planet's eerie atmosphere and insect-like population. He heightens the mystery and suspense that drives the first half of the film. And most importantly, he has created a grand love theme, the perfect accompaniment to the developing relationship between Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala. Their love is complicated - pure yet forbidden, personal but with profound ramifications for an entire galaxy. Somehow, John has managed to convey all of that complexity in a simple, beautiful hauntingly theme. And that is the genius of John Williams!

I like to think of the Star Wars films as silent movies, movies whose stories are carried forward visually and by a musical score. It took the musical genius of John Williams to fully realize this vision. His brilliant scores brought the original trilogy to life beyond my wildest dreams. But John's astounding success made composing the score for Episode I a daunting task. Gone were so many of the characters and situations that his music now indelibly evokes. In Episode I, there is no Luke Skywalker, no Princess Leia, no Han Solo, no evil Empire, and even Darth Vader is an innocent little boy. John had to draw upon the signature themes while creating a new, if somehow familiar, musical galaxy. And he had to visit new emotional territory in Episode I. His music had to help tell the story of a pacifist Queen who confronts the need to fight for the survival of her people, a mother who must give up her son so that he might achieve his true potential, and noble Jedi faced with the rise of an unimaginable evil. Once again, John has exceeded my expectations and produced a lavish, rich, moving and thrilling score. Every fan of Star Wars - and of great music - is in his debt.

While recently recording the music for Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace with the London Symphony Orchestra, I was delighted to see that there were a dozen or so members of the orchestra who had played on the original 1977 soundtrack. During our first intermission, several of the younger players approached me and explained that, as children, they had seen and heard Star Wars, and immediately resolved to study music with the goal of playing with the London Symphony.

As you can imagine, hearing this thrilled me since I had frequently noticed how many six-year-olds in our own country, who, not even having been born at the time of the original Star Wars movies, nevertheless know the story, characters and music of all three earlier films.

George Lucas seems to have created a truly trans-generational phenomenon. He has in fact created a mythological world full of tall tales, magical creatures and exotic places that has taken a permanent place in the popular culture of the entire world, and it is my continuing great privilege to accompany him on his uniquely creative journey.

Throughout the Star Wars films, John Williams has created a complete musical language to describe the characters and essentially tell the story of the saga. Episode III completes the Star Wars story; it also acts as a bridge to the original trilogy. In that way, the film has allowed John to add his own final chapter to the musical lexicon by creating brilliant new themes as well as drawing upon the rich legacy of music he has composed for the five other films over the past three decades. The film chronicles Anakin Skywalker's tragic turn to the dark side accompanied by such aggressively ominous music as Darth Vader's march, the Emperor's theme and a sweeping new piece that underscores the momentous duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan. In the end, the film reminds us that Anakin will eventually be redeemed through the determination and love of his children. John has beautifully captured this spirit of hope by reprising the most memorable music from the original trilogy, the themes of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. The balance of light and dark is central to Star Wars storytelling, and John has conveyed this expertly. His music for Episode III is joyous and adventurous at times, yet pulls us into the mournful and tragic as well. But as the saying goes, the darkest hour is always before the dawn, even the dawn of twin suns o­n a distant, arid planet.
