第1卷《江户百态》是以人间百态为画题。主要描绘了江户时代市井人物的姿态与社会风俗，小人物的嬉笑怒骂，还有日常生活中的百器百具、特色建筑物等。北斋的画带给人一种“幸福的江户人”的印象。
第2卷《森罗万象》是以自然万物为画题。主要描绘了鸟兽鱼虫、山川草木、波浪流水、名胜古迹等自然风物，以及雨和风之类的天气现象等，简直就是一部“自然博物图鉴”。在本卷中，你可以看到一个试图用画笔表现“世间一切存在”的北斋。
第3卷《奇想天外》是北斋内心所想象的世界。收录了日本和中国的神话传说，戏剧的经典场景，以及宗教性画题，还有幽灵、妖怪等。不仅集中体现了北斋在传说和古典方面的博学多识，还展现了他常人的创造力与描绘力。
