これまで、「瞳そらさないで」「君がいたから」「突然」をはじめ、数々の坂井泉水による歌詞提供作品のセルフカバーをオリジナルアルバム等で披露してきたZARD。
「翼を広げて」はDEENの2ndシングル(93.7.17発売)として、坂井泉水が歌詞提供した大ヒットナンバー。坂井泉水ヴォーカルによるZARDの「翼を広げて」は、ファンの間でも発表が長く待たれていたにもかかわらず、これまでCD収録はされていなかった作品です。このたび、その「翼を広げて」が4月9日公開「名探偵コナン 戦慄の楽譜(フルスコア)」の主題歌に決定、また1月よりTVアニメ「名探偵コナン」オープニングテーマとしてO.A.され、好評をいただいている「愛は暗闇の中で」と合わせて両A面シングルとして、2008年4月9日にリリースされることも決定しました。
ZARDと「名探偵コナン」の最初のコラボレーションは、98年の映画「名探偵コナン 14番目の標的（ターゲット）」主題歌「少女の頃に戻ったみたいに」。以来、これまでに映画2作、TV版テーマソング6作のあわせて8作品があります。坂井泉水自身、「コナンの観察力と推理力は、いつも見ていて気持ちがいいですよね。見た目は少年でも、本当はとても頼りになる男性。」とコメントしたこともあり、コラボレーションの際は、いつも楽しみながら楽曲制作をしていたというエピソードもあります。
また、今回の両A面シングルとしてのCD化にあたり、収録曲に選ばれたのは、こちらもリリースが熱望されていた「愛は暗闇の中で」。もともとは、ZARDデビューシングル「Good-bye My Loneliness」のカップリングとしてリリースされた楽曲です。

被用作「宝矿力」的广告曲，本人第一次初登场获得第1名（『負けないで』是初登场第2位，第4周才拿到第1）。ORICON单曲排名连续2周获得第1，同年1993年的年度排名中获得第9。作为宝力矿的广告曲中销量最高的，是ZARD史上仅次于『負けないで』第2高销量的单曲。本作的题目与同年7 月7日发行的第4张专辑标题一样。
1999年举行的船上LIVE上以及2004年的演唱会巡演上，作为第1首被演唱。
2007年8月19日的『24小时电视直播「拯救地球的爱」』（日本电视台）里，在坂井泉水追悼专题中，女出演者一起演唱这首以及『負けないで』、『マイ フレンド』。
2007年12月31日的『第58回NHK紅白歌合戦』（NHK）第一部分的末尾设立了坂井的追悼专题，一起演奏了『グロリアス マインド』、『揺れる想い』、『負けないで』。演奏这首歌是的屏幕上放映了坂井未公开的录像，引起了广泛的话题。
因为是与前作相同的BEING-GRAM发行的，所以同「負けないで」一样得到了广泛的知晓，即使在结婚典礼上也经常被演唱。第9张原创专辑「時間の翼」收录了它的10周年REMIX版本。之后織田在专辑『Songs』里作了SELF翻唱。而且在織田翻唱里，歌词的一部分被改成了男性化的歌词。
