With Wakened Hands
James Krenov (Author) / Seth Janofsky (Author, Photographer) Cambium Press 2000 - 10
Most woodworking books show one how to make things. Krenov's, on the other hand, suggests why someone should make them. This title, featuring work by both Krenov and his students at the College of the Redwoods, illustrates his philosophy of design and craft without being bogged down by the pretentiousness that such books frequently exhibit. His work, and that of his students, exhibits an aesthetic beauty that is rarely seen (the vivid color photographs are superb and do justice to their fine work). Krenov inhabits the highest level of the woodcraft pantheon now in his 80s he continues to teach and create incredible work. Comprehensive public and academic libraries should consider this title.

52 Boxes in 52 Weeks
Matt Kenney Taunton Press 2018 - 5
What do you get when an accomplished woodworker and senior editor of Fine Woodworking magazine sets himself the challenge of designing and building one box a week for a solid year? You get 52 Boxes in 52 Weeks, a book dedicated to making relatively simple--yet gracefully elegant--boxes that woodworkers of all skill levels will be eager to build. Readers will begin by learning the fundamental box-making techniques that are applicable to almost every box in the book: how to match grain at corners how to cut miters how to make tops and bottoms how to finish a box with shellac, sometimes highlighted with milk paint ( a major trend in finishing right now). Following that, Kenney reveals some universal design principles that can be used as guidance as readers develop their own design aesthetic. And then, of course, the book transitions to the 52 boxes themselves.

The Anarchist's Tool Chest
Christopher Schwarz Lost Art Press 2011
"This book, 'The Anarchist's Tool Chest,' paints a world where woodworking tools are at the center of an ethical life filled with creating furniture that will last for generations. It makes the case that you can build almost anything with a kit of fewer than 50 high-quality tools, and it shows you how to select real working tools, regardless of their vintage or brand name" --

Handplane Essentials
Schwarz, Christopher 2013 - 7
Everything you need to use your handplanes! There is no woodworking tool that's more satisfying, quick and precise to use as a handplane. Planes can process timber in its rough state, bring boards up to a glimmering smoothness, cut rabbets, dados, grooves and other joints, and trim wood with a precision that has yet to be matched by power tools. Yet many woodworkers--both beginners and professionals--are intimidated by choosing the right tool, sharpening its cutter and putting it to use. And that's why Christopher Schwarz wrote this book. "Handplane Essentials" contains everything you need to choose the right tool for your budget and projects, take it out of the box, sharpen it and use it successfully. The chapters in this book have been compiled from more than 10 years of the author's writing on the subject of handplanes in magazines, trade journals and blogs.

The Anarchist's Design Book
Christopher Schwarz Lost Art Press LLC 2016 - 3
The Anarchist's Design Book is a worthy sequel to Christopher Schwarz' 2011 best seller, The Anarchist's Tool Chest. It is the result of four years of difficult work researching early furniture forms, building them, redesigning them and then building them again (and again).
Chris notes that most of the classic American furniture that we celebrate today as the pinnacle of design represented in fact a tiny proportion of the furniture forms historically built, bought and sold by ordinary Americans and their ancestors.
The Anarchist's Design Book explores 11 classic furniture forms that run the gamut from beds, dining tables, chairs, chests, desks and shelving. These forms use two main construction techniques -- staked and boarded. They are simple for the beginner, do not require a lot of tools, and can be used to produce objects that have endured centuries of hard use.
However this isn’t really a book of plans. The Anarchist’s Design Book shows you the overarching patterns behind these 11 pieces. It gives you the road map for designing your own pieces (which is what we did before we had plans.)
The Anarchist’s Design Book is 456 pages that are sewn for long-term durability. The book is 8" x 10", casebound and sheathed in thick hardback boards that are covered in cotton cloth. The edges of all the pages have been painted with black paint to protect them from moisture and damage – a detail common on early books. Like all Lost Art Press books, The Anarchist’s Design Book is produced and printed entirely in the United States.
