The Danish Chair
Christian Holmsted Olesen Strandberg Publishing 2018
The golden age of the perfect chair Danish designers are renowned around the world for their beautiful and functional chairs. This substantial new book tells the full story of the Danish chairs that were created during the 20th century. The Danish Chair: An International Affair is structured around chair types and illustrates how the "golden age" of Danish furniture design was driven by the study and refinement of historical furniture types, including chairs from abroad that served as important sources of inspiration. It traces the family relations between the chairs and shows how they influenced each other in terms of detailing, construction and concept. Design was the cultural phenomenon that put Denmark on the world map in the mid-20th century. The international brand of Danish design arose in 1949 when American journalists began to write about the Danish furniture at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition. This was not only the beginning of an important export opportunity but was also taken up as a challenge by Danish designers, who became world-renowned for their obsession with creating the perfect chair. Prominent figures such as Hans J. Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, B rge Mogensen, Finn Juhl and Poul Kj rholm were constantly seeking to refine existing chair types, and the chair became the touchstone, the true measure of the designer's skill. The Danish Chair is a highly visual introduction to the Danish chair of the 20th century. It is based on a permanent exhibition of the same name that opened at Designmuseum Danmark in 2016 and written by the museum's head of exhibits and collections, Christian Holmsted Olesen.

By Hound & Eye: A Plain & Easy Guide to Designing Furniture with No Further Trouble Goodreads
Lost Art Press LLC 2015 - 1
“By Hound & Eye: A Plain & Easy Guide to Designing Furniture with no Further Trouble” is an illustrated cartoon journey through the world of pre-industrial design geometry. It stars Journeyman and his pizza-loving dog, Snidely, as they untangle the world of points, segments, arcs and the three-dimensional world using nothing more than a compass, straightedge and pencil.

After each new idea is introduced, you are shown how to perform the exercise yourself right in the workbook.

You can perform all the exercises in an afternoon. And even you have been steeped in geometry for years, we are certain you will experience several eye-opening moments while performing the exercises. This book connects geometry to furniture design in a way that no other book has. And the exercises ensure the lessons will make it from the page and into your fingers. Reading about it is one thing. Doing it is another (like woodworking).

Also fun: George and Jim have given their work the look and feel of a middle-school workbook, complete with slightly corny jokes.

The 192-page workbook is softcover with a sewn and glued binding for durability. Like all our products, "By Hound & Eye" is printed in the United States.

The workbook is being hand illustrated and hand lettered by Andrea Love. It is written as a companion to the hardbound book "By Hand & Eye" by Walker and Tolpin. The two books are meant to complement one another. "By Hand & Eye" focuses more on the history behind the geometrical systems and offers projects using the simple ratios explored in the book. The workbook "By Hound & Eye" is concerned mostly with the practical exercises needed to open your inner eye and offers exercises not found in the hardbound book.

52 Boxes in 52 Weeks
Matt Kenney Taunton Press 2018 - 5
What do you get when an accomplished woodworker and senior editor of Fine Woodworking magazine sets himself the challenge of designing and building one box a week for a solid year? You get 52 Boxes in 52 Weeks, a book dedicated to making relatively simple--yet gracefully elegant--boxes that woodworkers of all skill levels will be eager to build. Readers will begin by learning the fundamental box-making techniques that are applicable to almost every box in the book: how to match grain at corners how to cut miters how to make tops and bottoms how to finish a box with shellac, sometimes highlighted with milk paint ( a major trend in finishing right now). Following that, Kenney reveals some universal design principles that can be used as guidance as readers develop their own design aesthetic. And then, of course, the book transitions to the 52 boxes themselves.

The Non-Designer's Design Book
Robin Williams Peachpit Press 2008 - 2
Robin Williams provides a practical introduction to the classical principles of design in this pamphlet-sized book. Her discussion of layout is organized around four basic design principles: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity. Each is presented in its own chapter with plenty of you-can-do-it-at-home examples. The typography section explains the principles of Concord, Conflict and Contrast, based on Williams'classification of type faces by style (Oldstyle, Modern, Slab Serif, Sans Serif, Script and Decorative), weight (Light, Bold), Shape (Narrow, Wide), and spacing. A discussion of color is notably absent; the roots of this book in early grayscale Macintosh computing show through.
Williams's book should hit the mark for amateurs creating one-page designs such as simple web sites, brochures or business cards. Set aside an hour or two to read it and do the exercises, and your designs should improve immensely. Mine have.
