Where Are the Everglades?
Nico Medina / Who HQ Penguin Group 2025 - 06
Journey into the Everglades—a national park in Florida home to hundreds of species of animals from crocodiles to manatees—in this illustrated book for young readers!

From the #1 New York Times bestselling Who Was? series comes Where Is?, a series that tells the stories of world-famous landmarks and natural wonders, featuring a fold-out map!

Long before the Everglades became one of the largest wetlands in the world and a national park, it was covered by a warm, shallow sea. Across millions of years, sea levels dropped, the land below surfaced, and the area transformed into a thriving environment for unique plants and animals like mangrove forests and the Florida panther.

By the mid-1800s, most of the indigenous people living in the Everglades had been killed or forced off the land. By 1900, Florida had become the nation's twenty-seventh state and had begun draining the Everglades to create land for farms and cities. With the loss of so much of the wetlands, native plants and animals began to die off. Although the Everglades is protected today, it still faces several challenges, including pollution, rising sea levels, and pollution.

The Everglades, often called the "River of Grass," is truly a natural treasure, and its history teaches us about the importance of taking care of our environment.

History Comics: The Roanoke Colony
Chris Schweizer First Second 2020 - 06
Turn back the clock with History Comics! In this graphic novel, investigate one of America's oldest and most intriguing mysteries.

Over a hundred years before the pilgrims, the very first English settlers arrived on Roanoke Island. But without warning, these colonists abandoned their new home and disappeared without a trace.

What happened to the colonists? To figure it out, we’ll need to investigate how these missing settlers got to Roanoke in the first place, and what the people already living there thought about these strange foreigners. It’s a case filled with brutal battles, perilous pirate ships, ruthless queens, scheming businessmen, and enough skeletons to fill a graveyard.

Ginseng Roots: A Memoir Goodreads
Craig Thompson Pantheon 2025 - 4
From the celebrated author of Blankets and Habibi comes a new graphic memoir exploring the class divide, childhood labor, family, and our globalized world—all centered on Wisconsin's ginseng farming industry

When Blankets first published in 2003, Craig Thompson's seminal memoir about first love and faith lost in rural Wisconsin débuted to rapturous acclaim. The winner of two Eisner and three Harvey Awards, it is considered one of the all-time great works of graphic storytelling. Now, in Thompson's long-awaited return to the autobiographical form, comes the story that Blankets left out.

Ginseng Roots follows Thompson and his siblings, who spent the summers of their youth weeding and harvesting rows of coveted American ginseng on rural Wisconsin farms for one dollar an hour. In his trademark breathtaking pen-and-ink work, Thompson interweaves this lost youth with the 300-year-old history of the global ginseng trade and the many lives it has tied together—from ginseng hunters in ancient China to industrial farmers and migrant harvesters in the American Midwest to his own family still grappling with the aftershocks of the bitter past.

Stretching from Marathon, Wisconsin, to Northeast China, Ginseng Roots charts the rise of industrial agriculture, the decline of American labor, and the search for a sense of home in a rapidly changing world.

History Comics: Ellis Island: Immigration and the American Dream Goodreads
Felipe Galindo Feggo / Tait Howard First Second 2025 - 1
Turn back the clock with History Comics! In this volume, take a visit to Ellis Island and learn America's immigration story.

Many Americans know someone who can trace their ancestry through Ellis Island. In addition to being part of the world-famous Statue of Liberty National Monument, this modest-sized piece of land once housed the main immigration processing center for the U.S., documenting upwards of 12 million people between 1892 and 1954! Over the generations, Ellis Island has taken on an almost mythic status as a beacon of hope to those seeking freedom and refuge from persecution. But how did it all get started?

Our past is only the beginning with History Comics, a riveting nonfiction graphic novel series from First Second!

Andy Hirsch First Second 2022 - 10
Turn back the clock with History Comics! In this graphic novel, experience the great railroad race between Central Pacific and Union Pacific. Wealth and glory await whichever builds the longest track!

In 1863, America is divided not just by the civil war but by months of travel over thousands of miles. Two railroad companies, one each from East and West, are given the task of connecting the nation by rail. Building this railroad will be a monumental undertaking, difficult and dangerous. The work falls to immigrant laborers from the lowest economic classes. They accomplish astounding feats of engineering while waiting for an answer: Will those who connect the country be accepted into it?

How the history of American voting rights have shaped the way we vote today, the perfect primer for future voters—now in paperback!

An updated edition of Tommy Jenkin’s Drawing the Vote aimed at educating young readers.

Originally published in the lead-up to the 2020 US presidential election, Drawing the A Graphic Novel History for Future Voters looks at the history of voting rights in the United States and how it has affected the way we vote today. Author and educator Tommy Jenkins was inspired by his students to trace this history from the earliest steps toward democracy during the American Revolution, to the upheaval caused by the Civil War, the fight for women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement, the election of an African American president, and beyond. Along the way, Jenkins identifies events and trends that led to the unprecedented results of the 2016 presidential election that left many Americans wondering, “How did this happen?” At a time when many citizens are experiencing apathy about voting and skepticism concerning our bitterly divided political parties, Drawing the Vote seeks to offer some explanation for how we got here and how every American, young and old, can take action.

The expanded paperback edition features an additional 32 pages of comics that cover the results of the 2020 presidential election and the factors that shaped it, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the January 6 insurrection.
