When the Soviet Army marched into Romania in 1944, a part of the Romanian population went “into the mountains” – a diverse assortment of nationalists and fascists, liberals, apolitical farmers and members of the middle-class, who were affected by the Communists’ expropriations. Over a thousand armed resistance groups took refuge in the inaccessible forests of the Carpathian Mountains where they waited in vain for the support of the Western Allies. Thirty of them held their ground well into the 1950s. One was led by Ion Gavrilă-Ogoranu, who managed to remain undetected until 1976 when he was arrested. 우리는 이미 6.25전쟁에 대해 숱하게 들어왔다. 각종 회고록과 역사책, 기록물들이 그 증거다. 하지만 그것들이 6.25전쟁을 제대로 기록하고 있었을까. 책의 저자인 백선엽(96) 예비역 대장은 고개를 가로젓는다.그는 6.25전쟁의 흐름을 관통한 최고의 야전(野戰) 영웅으로 인정받는 인물이다. 한반도 전역을 누비며 전쟁의 현장을 진두지휘했으며, 혹독한 전투 속에서 수많은 죽음의 위기를 겪으면서도 대승을 이끌어냈다. 그런 그가 역사 속에 가려져있던 우리군의 진짜 모습을 꺼내보려 한다. 또한 전쟁 상황에서 우리가 남긴 실수와 아쉬움을 되짚고 그를 통해 미래를 대비하는 자세까지 생각해보게끔 한다.
‘징비록(懲毖錄)’은 그렇게 붙여진 이름이다. 380여 년 전 출간한 유성룡 선생의 동명 저서에서 그 의미를 착안했다. 6.25전쟁 속에 감춰진 패전(敗戰)의 순간들과 그 과정을 제대로 기록하고, 앞으로 언제 닥쳐올지 모를 또 다른 전쟁을 준비하자고 목소리를 낸 것이다.

This publication explores, in detail and with photographs and illustrations, the April 1975 withdrawal of the American Navy and Marine Corps from Cambodia and South Vietnam (with refugees), and the aftermath in Southeast Asia. This withdrawal showed the courage and skill of the American forces, who had to carry out large-scale and complicated evacuations despite criticism of the military by many Americans back home who had lost confidence in military and government during the protracted conflict. Yet the American forces proved in April 1975 that they were capable of completing complex missions with successful results, and this predicted the future of the military: with appropriate training and the dedication of competent servicemembers, the armed forces were brought back to a strong and healthy state of affairs by the 1980s.

This is the sixth monograph in the series The U.S. Navy and the Vietnam War. It covers aircraft carrier activity during Operation Rolling Thunder in the war. Operation Rolling Thunder was one of the longest sustained aerial bombing campaigns in history. And it would be a failure. The U.S. Navy proved essential to the conduct of Rolling Thunder. Exploiting the inherent flexibility and mobility of naval forces, the Seventh Fleet operated with impunity for three years off the coast of North Vietnam. The success with which the Navy executed the later Operation Linebacker campaign against North Vietnam in 1972 revealed how much the service had learned from and exploited the Rolling Thunder experience of 1965–1968.

Combat at Close Quarters describes riverine combat during the Vietnam War, emphasizing the operations of the U.S. Navy’s River Patrol Force, the U.S. Army-Navy Mobile Riverine Force, and the Vietnam Navy. One section details the SEALORDS combined campaign, a determined effort by U.S. Navy, Vietnam Navy, and allied ground forces to cut enemy supply lines from Cambodia and disrupt operations at base areas deep in the delta. The authors provide details on the combat vessels, helicopters, weapons, and equipment employed in the Mekong Delta as well as the Vietnamese combatants on both sides and American troops who fought to secure Vietnam’s waterways.
