第二次世界大战中1944年2月20日，莱比锡格万特豪斯布商大厦音乐厅被战火所无情摧毁。以建筑为名的格万特豪斯布商大厦管弦乐团不得不在动物园旁边的Conference Centre度日如年。音乐厅的废墟被一直保留到1968年，在70年代乐团总监库特马舒尔的不懈努力之下音乐厅在70年代末期得以重建。建筑大师Rudolf Skoda用了57个月完成了这个杰作，保留传统角度新落成的音乐厅依然命名为：New Gewandhaus。1981年10月8日，乐团在新家进行了首场演出：贝多芬第九交响曲《合唱》。柏林古典唱片公司为当时的现场留下了效果极佳的录音。唱片之中乐团处于极佳的兴奋状态，充满自信的展现出自门德尔松到康维茨尼直到马舒尔的一贯严谨端正演绎风格，在层次与细节上表现透彻完美，情绪温和感人。合唱团编制除了自己拥有的格万特豪斯布商大厦合唱团与童声合唱团之外，莱比锡地区的其它老朋友也来捧场：合作数百年的莱比锡圣托马斯教堂童声唱诗班、隶属莱比锡广播电台的莱比锡广播合唱团，两个童声合唱团的加入令女声合唱部分更如天籁。四套合唱团站在新建成的漏斗型山谷梯田合唱席上如海一样的宽阔，造就了贝多芬第九交响曲史上少见的豪华配置。这张唱片太棒了！个人以为是和Gewandhausorchester Leipzig四次合作里面气氛最好的。
