特吕弗的半自传体作品，探讨了一个13岁男孩的生活和内心世界。安托万（让-皮埃尔•利奥德 Jean-Pierre Léaud 饰）处于成长的叛逆期，却没有得到良好的成长土壤。他面对着僵化保守的学校教育制度、四分五裂的家庭坏境和残酷冰冷的社会面相，无论如何都找不到出路。他逃课，见到母亲和他人偷情，跟老师谎称母亲去世，谎言被揭穿后，他离家出走，彻夜不归，并为了归还偷走的打印机而被警察当场抓住，带去了少管中心，但他还是在大家不留神的时候逃走了。安托万拼命往外跑，身后警笛鸣起，迷惘的安托万一直朝着大海奔跑……

影片也以插叙的形式重现了安托万以往的生活。他与科莱特意外地重新相遇，科莱特此时已经成为一个律师。两人都又遇到了令他们怦然心动的人，而为了留住缘分，也都花费了一番很大的心思。

克劳德（让-皮埃尔·利奥德 Jean-Pierre Léaud 饰）结识了名叫安娜（吉卡·马克汉姆 Kika Markham 饰）的美丽女子，两人交往了一段时间后觉得十分投缘，安娜遂即要请克劳德到自己的家中做客。在安娜的家中，克劳德见到了安那性格内向害羞腼腆的妹妹米瑞尔（斯塔西·汤德黛 Stacey Tendeter 饰），之后，克劳德向米瑞尔展开了热烈的攻势。
在遭到了米瑞尔的拒绝之后，克劳德离开了伤心地，决定开始新的生活，在此期间，他一直和米瑞尔保持着信件来往。一次偶然中，克劳德遇见了久违的安娜，孤男寡女相见犹如干柴烈火，但这种关系并没有维持多久，很快，安娜就和克劳德的朋友狄尔卡（Philippe Léotard 饰）在一起了，但是，克劳德与安娜和米瑞尔之间的故事并没有就此结束。

美国内战时期，法国大作家Victor Hugo的二女儿Adele Hugo（伊莎贝尔·阿佳妮 Isabelle Adjani饰）漂洋过海来到加拿大的Halifax寻找自己的爱人——英国军官Pinson（布鲁斯·罗宾逊 Bruce Robinson）。然而Pinson却已移情别恋，对Adele异常冷漠。Adele想尽一切方法想挽回Pinson皆告失败。而另一方面，当地高昂的生活费也让Adele难以承受，只能一次又一次要求父亲汇钱。此时的Hugo正流亡在一个小岛上，妻子病重，两人多次希望Adele能返回家中，但Adele坚持留在加拿大。恋情的失败让Adele经常想起她溺水身亡的姐姐，她的精神开始变得错乱。之后，Pinson跟着部队离开Halifax前往另一个小岛Barbados，Adele也跟随而去，在那里，她的病情日益恶化，最终被送回法国，在休养院里度过余生，最终于一战时期悄然离世。
本片是关于雨果二女儿Adele的传记片，扮演Adele的伊莎贝尔·阿佳妮获当年奥斯卡最佳女主角提名。

五位著名导演，各自执导了一段关于二十岁恋情的短片。
一、特吕弗《安托万与柯莱特》：《四百下》男主角安托万人生故事的延续，安托万暗恋上比自己年纪稍大的柯莱特，柯莱特却只把他当作弟弟般地看待，安托万的早恋就此无疾而终。
二、瓦伊达《华沙》：少女爱上了在动物园里见义勇为的男子，而力邀他参与家里的青年朋友聚会。不经意间，一些场景细节勾起了男子战时的记忆伤痕……
三、罗西里尼（无标题）：可怜的下层女孩不甘心充当第三者，却被成熟老练的贵妇寥寥数语击溃了心理防线……
四、石原慎太郎（无标题）：年轻的工人暗恋上气质非凡的女子，尽管每天都会在路上碰面，他却不敢有所表达而沉耽于幻想，被压抑的强烈欲望最终引发为悲剧。
五、马克斯•奥菲尔斯（无标题）：借助于往昔青春岁月的甜蜜回忆，一对夫妇逐步修复彼此之间的关系裂痕。

日以作夜是一个电影技术术语，意思是指在白天拍摄夜景，本片讲的就是一个电影拍摄过程中的故事。电影《Meet Pamela》正在如火如荼的拍摄中，导演Ferrand（弗朗索瓦•特吕弗 François Truffaut饰）不仅要处理电影拍摄的事情，还要忙于照顾演员们的情绪。其中就有脆弱敏感的男主角Alphonse（让-皮埃尔•利奥德 Jean-Pierre Léaud 饰）的感情问题，还有精神受挫的女星Julie Baker（杰奎琳•比塞特 Jacqueline Bisset 饰）。电影还要赶在约定的时间之前完成，拍摄的进展也不甚顺利，一切看起来如此糟糕，《Meet Pamela》还能拍完吗……本片精彩地以“戏中戏”的结构展现了一部电影拍摄的过程。

But The 400 Blows did not only introduce the world to its precocious director—it also unveiled his indelible creation: Antoine Doinel.
