In this magisterial new study, Peter Burke explores the social and cultural history of the languages spoken or written in Europe between the invention of printing and the French Revolution, arguing that, from a linguistic point of view, 1450 to 1789 should be regarded as a distinct period. One major theme of the book is the relation between languages and communities (regions, churches, occupations and genders as well as nations) and the place of language as a way of identifying others as well as a symbol of one's own identity. A second, linked theme is that of competition: between Latin and the vernaculars, between different vernaculars, dominant and subordinate, and finally between different varieties of the same vernacular, such as standard languages and dialects. 出版说明
一、本书主要供一般读者自学拉丁语之用，但也可用作大专学校拉丁语教材。对初学拉丁语的读者，本书适于自修，对已学过而未掌握者，可帮助复习、巩固，以达到温故而知新之目的。
二、本书共有50课，每课所需学时视读者掌握西方语言的程度而定。如读过法语、意大利语、西班牙语、英语等任何一种，则每课需要一、二小时，因为这几种语言中的绝大多数词汇来自拉丁语，语法方面亦多相似之处。如未读过任何一种西方语言，每课大约需要三、四小时。只要坚持每天读一课或半课，则至多半年到一年，即可读毕本书。
三、本书前五课是拉丁语音及语法基本概念部分。拉丁语读音简单易学，但为了自学者便于自修，语音部分的拉丁语读音例词、拼音练习均加注国际音标，以供读者参考。
四、本书从第三课起每课均包含语法、词汇、课文及练习等部分，但第六课以前的词汇、课文和练习主要还是为读音服务的。每课的课文和练习与语法相结合，编排上首先尽量使读者在学习过程中掌握并巩固本课词汇及语法材料，其次才是用所学过的语法和词汇进行造句，以此使读者得到反复练习的机会，进一步熟习已出现过的词汇与语法现象。
五、本书第三十七课以前介绍拉丁语法上最基本的部分，如名词、形容词的变格法、动词的第一至第四变位法以及简单句的结构；从第三十七课起是介绍较复杂的语法现象，如代词的变格、形动词、动名词、动词的其它各式的构成和用法、不规则动词以及复合句的结构等。如能认真地学完本书则可掌握拉丁语的基本词法和句法。
六、本书对所有两个音节以上的多音节词均加有重音符号，并对每课的词汇及书末的拉汉词汇中的两个和两个以上音节的单词，在它的倒数第二个音节的元音上加标有长音或短音符号（属于长音而无须加长音符号的双元音和位于两个或两个以上辅音前的元音除外），以利初学者熟习正确的读音。
七、在掌握本书中出现的1500个左右的单词和语法材料的基础上，读者进一步自修高深的语法并凭借辞典阅读浅易的拉丁语著作，估计不会发生太大的困难。
八、从事医药或其它科学的读者，在读完本书后，只要能学些本专业的拉丁语词汇，再参考本专业的拉丁语教材，就能够用拉丁语进行工作，如正确开写拉丁语处方等。
九、为了帮助自学，书末附有全部课文、练习、阅读材料的译文或答案。但这些译文和答案仅供参考而已。读者自己作出的译文和答案，不必一定与书上的译语答案一字不变、词序丝毫不差才算正确。所附的译文从汉语角度来看有时还似乎不够通畅，这大都由于要无歧义地翻译原文或明确语法关系所致，尚希读者谅解。
本书存在的缺点和错误，请读者多多批评指正。

Entirely composed in Latin, Part I, Familia Romana, provides an excellent introduction to Latin, including the essentials of Latin grammar and a basic vocabulary of over 1500 words. The thirty-five chapters describe the life of a Roman family in the 2nd century A.D., and culminate in readings from classical poets and Donatus's Ars Grammatica, the standard Latin school text for a millennium. Each chapter is divided into two or three lectiones (lessons) of a couple pages each followed by a grammar section, Grammatica Latina, and three exercises or Pensa. Hans ??rberg's impeccable Latinity, humorous stories, and the Peer Lauritzen illustrations make this work a classic. The book includes a table of inflections, a Roman calendar, and a word index, Index vocabulorum.
