This book contains the ideas of functional data analysis by a number of case studies. The case studies are accessible to research workers in a wide range of disciplines. Every reader should gain not only a specific understanding of the methods of functional data analysis, but more importantly a general insight into the underlying patterns of thought. There is an associated web site with MATLABr and S?PLUSr implementations of the methods discussed.

From the Preface: "This book was written for the active reader. The first part consists of problems, frequently preceded by definitions and motivation, and sometimes followed by corollaries and historical remarks...The second part, a very short one, consists of hints...The third part, the longest, consists of solutions: proofs, answers, or contructions, depending on the nature of the problem...This is not an introduction to Hilbert space theory. Some knowledge of that subject is a prerequisite: at the very least, a study of the elements of Hilbert space theory should proceed concurrently with the reading of this book."

The unifying approach of functional analysis is to view functions as points in abstract vector space and the differential and integral operators as linear transformations on these spaces. The author's goal is to present the basics of functional analysis in a way that makes them comprehensible to a student who has completed courses in linear algebra and real analysis, and to develop the topics in their historical contexts.
