据悉，原型人物穆里根的意识经常在南斯拉夫共产党员雷根、女同性恋者阿达娜、英国男子亚瑟以及4岁的聋子肖恩等24个人格中来回切换，这对于好莱坞而言是再刺激不过的改编题材。早在1997年，“卡神”詹姆斯·卡梅隆就有拍摄这部电影的打算，莱昂纳多那时就很想出演，不过卡神当时中意的人选却是约翰-库萨克。
